Discover the "medium format" advantage

If you've ever dreamed of being able to take the same kind of dynamic, ultra-high-res images as professional fashion, landscape, and print advertising photographers but were put off by the steep price of admission for professional equipment, the Pentax 645D is made for you. This "medium format" DSLR boasts a high-performance, 40-megapixel CCD image sensor and superb build quality just like the uber-expensive pro gear, but at a more down-to-earth price.

The 645D's medium-format sensor measures approximately 44 x 33mm, making it physically much larger than a standard "full-frame" DSLR. All that extra surface area provides several benefits: greater dynamic range, lower noise levels, and extraordinary resolution. You'll get cleaner images with breathtaking depth and clarity in a package that's not much larger than many top-of-the-line DSLRs.

Useful tools for serious photographers

You can count on shot after shot of crisply focused and precisely exposed images thanks to the 645D's 11-point autofocus and 77-segment metering systems. And this camera is easy to shoot with. Its deep, rubberized grip provides comfortable handling while shortcut controls on the body give you easy access to ISO sensitivity, bracketing, focusing, white balance, and other important settings, without the need to scroll through menus. You also get a mirror lock-up function that prevents blur caused by the movement of the mirror during the exposure, ensuring the sharpest possible image capture for professional-level applications.

The 645D's large, glass-prism optical viewfinder offers a bright, crisp view of your subjects. And the camera's high-res 3" LCD screen gives you a crystal-clear window with up to 32X enlargement for reviewing your shots in detail. Plus, you'll enjoy uninterrupted shooting thanks to the extra-large capacity afforded by the cam's dual SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots.

Built strong to handle any environment

You might think that such a finely tuned, high-performance camera like the 645D would be delicate and need to live inside a protected studio environment. Not so! Pentax gave the 645D a rigid die-cast aluminum chassis then wrapped it in a strong magnesium alloy body for added durability and thermal stability. Then they fully weather-sealed and cold-proofed it to resist rain, snow, dust, and other environmental hazards. The result is a camera that's rugged, solidly built, and able to keep operating at peak performance levels out in the field.

Develop your photography hobby

You don't have to be an expert photographer to use an SLR — they all offer easy automatic shooting. Because of their build quality and the physics of good glass and large sensors, even their built-in automatic settings will get you better pictures than most point-and-shoots or mobile devices. But experienced photographers and budding hobbyists can get more creative by manually adjusting settings like aperture and shutter speed. SLRs let you expand your shooting options with additional lenses and flashes to suit just about any situation. If you'd like to record the occasional video, look for a model with high-def movie mode.
