HiFiMAN takes in-ear versatility to new heights

Though relatively new to the headphone industry, HiFiMAN has quickly established itself as a preeminent producer of audiophile gear. Now the same stunning sound of their over-ear headphones is available in an earbud thanks to the RE-262. Enjoy brilliant clarity, deep bass and lifelike presence with these lightweight in-ear headphones.

HiFiMAN always goes the extra mile for great sound quality — with the RE-262, they are breaking new ground. These versatile earbuds come with a wide range of listening options. The stock cable comes with a balanced miniplug connection for devices or amplifiers that can accommodate this sonically advanced feature. Don't have a balanced headphone amp? Not to worry: just pop on the unbalanced adapter and plug these headphones into any conventional unbalanced jack.

Customize your fit without sacrificing the integrity of the recording

As if the inclusion of balanced and unbalanced connectors wasn't enough, HiFiMAN also accounted for varying styles of wearing earbuds. While most people wear them in the correct ears with the cables hanging straight down from the earpieces, some listeners prefer to wear them backwards, switching ears and wrapping the cables up and around their ears for a more secure fit. So, HiFiMAN includes two adapters (one balanced, one unbalanced) that reverse the channels, so you can wear these earbuds in either ear yet still enjoy the proper left/right mix — impressive versatility from a forward-thinking headphone trailblazer.

Want to push the RE-262 to even greater heights? Pair them with a dedicated headphone amplifier to bring out more detail and extend the already impressive bass response.

Fantastic sound. I listen on the train and the bus to and from work, the sound is so full and clear I'm hearing parts of recordings I've never heard before. Haven't needed an amp for my hour transit so far, may be the battery in my Samsung Galaxy S III, still plan on trying an amp. VERY happy with purchase.

Pros: Amazing sound. Cord options, and accessories round out the package.

Cons: Thought the cords would be more substantial.

Product Research

Overview: The HiFiMAN RE-262 in-ear headphones feature powerful 9mm drivers with Neodymium magnets. Attached is a 28" cord with a balanced 4-pin 3.5mm miniplug. There are three 28" extension cords: balanced (TRRS), unbalanced (TRS), and unbalanced with reversed polarity. The adjustable yoke slides up and down the cord to give you the best fit. The included hinged hard case can store the headphones, ear tip assortment, and the extension cables.

Balanced Input: The RE-262 are balanced headphones with a 4-conductor (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) 3.5mm plug for excellent sonic performance. With balanced headphones, you can take advantage of the higher performance when used with devices with balanced outputs. If not connecting to a balanced output device, you will need to use one of the supplied unbalanced extension cords.

Invertible Earbuds: The versatile earbuds on the RE-262 can be worn in two ways. You can wear them with the cord pointing downward, or flip them over and wear them with the cord pointing upward and around the top of the ear. When the earbuds are inverted, you will need to use the extension cord that reverses the polarity, so the left channel will still be played into the left ear (even though the right earbud is worn in the left ear), and vice versa.

Ear Tips: The HiFiMAN RE-262 comes with 5 pairs of ear tips: 3 pairs of mono-flange black ear tips (S, M, L), and 2 pairs of dual-flange clear ear tips (M, L).

  • Frequency Response: 15 Hz to 22k Hz

A cut above the norm

The little presentation box with the hinged latch on it led me to believe these would be some serious headphones. And the performance of the HiFiMAN RE-262's didn't disappoint.

I was impressed by the overall spaciousness of the sound. It seemed like my music had real depth to it. The amount of detail — especially from my high-resolution audio files — was extraordinary. If there was any drawback, it was that the headphones were too faithful in their reproduction. Low-performance earbuds can be pretty forgiving with low-quality audio. With the RE-262's I was hearing the files as they were — warts and all.

If you're listening to 256kbps or higher audio, the RE-262's will make your music sound good. A great set of headphones for the serious music lover.
