HiFi performance from a unique, efficient design

Though relatively new to the headphone industry, HiFiMAN has quickly garnered a reputation for putting sound quality above everything else. While known initially for their planar driver over-ear 'phones, they are now producing audiophile in-ears, making it easier than ever to take their neutral, wide-open sound wherever you go. The RE-272, HiFiMAN's flagship in-ear headphone, delivers exquisite detail and low, expansive bass in a lightweight, durable design that can be easily driven by most portable music players.

HiFiMAN RE-272 in-ear headphones

Midrange presence and a wide soundstage distinguish the HE-272 from the competition.

HiFiMAN always goes the extra mile for great sound quality — with the RE-272, they are breaking new ground. These versatile earbuds come with a wide range of listening options. The stock cable comes with a balanced miniplug connection for devices or amplifiers that can accommodate this sonically advanced feature. Don't have a balanced headphone amp? Not to worry: just pop on the unbalanced adapter and plug these headphones into any conventional unbalanced jack.

Customize your fit without sacrificing the integrity of the recording

As if the inclusion of balanced and unbalanced connectors wasn't enough, HiFiMAN also takes into account varying styles of wearing earbuds. While most people wear them in the correct ears with the cables hanging straight down from the earpieces, some listeners prefer to wear them backwards, switching ears and wrapping the cables up and around their ears for a more secure fit. So, HiFiMan includes two adapters (one balanced, one unbalanced) that reverse the channels, so you can wear these earbuds in either ear yet still enjoy the proper left/right mix — impressive versatility from a forward-thinking headphone trailblazer.

However you choose to listen, the RE-272 can be enjoyed at home, on the go, or at the office. Not only do the included adapters give you options, but the included ear tip assortment ensures you can find just the right fit to block out distractions and seal in crystal-clear, warm sound. While efficient enough for portable players, these earbuds will really sparkle with a quality headphone amplifier paired with your stereo, iPod® or computer.

Product Research

Overview: The HiFiMAN RE-272 in-ear headphones feature powerful 9mm drivers with Neodymium magnets. Attached is a 28" cord with a balanced 4-pin 3.5mm miniplug. There are three 28" extension cords: balanced (TRRS), unbalanced (TRS), and unbalanced with reversed polarity. The adjustable yoke slides up and down the cord to give you the best fit. The included hinged hard case can store the headphones, ear tip assortment, and the extension cables.

Balanced Input: The RE-272 are balanced headphones with a 4-conductor (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) 3.5mm plug for excellent sonic performance. With balanced headphones, you can take advantage of the higher performance when used with devices with balanced outputs. If not connecting to a balanced output device, you will need to use one of the supplied unbalanced extension cords.

Invertible Earbuds: The versatile earbuds on the RE-272 can be worn in two ways. You can wear them with the cord pointing downward, or flip them over and wear them with the cord pointing upward and around the top of the ear. When the earbuds are inverted, you will need to use the extension cord that reverses the polarity, so the left channel will still be played into the left ear (even though the right earbud is worn in the left ear), and vice versa.

Ear Tips: The HiFiMAN RE-272 comes with 5 pairs of ear tips: 3 pairs of mono-flange black ear tips (S, M, L), and 2 pairs of dual-flange clear ear tips (M, L).

  • Frequency Response: 15 Hz to 22k Hz

Accurate, detailed sound

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 2/11/2013 11:31:00 AM

I have to admit I'm not entirely enamoured of the company name — HiFiMAN — but I am in love with their products. The RE-272 in-ear headphones are among the best in-ear models I've auditioned.

The earbuds come with a nice selection of sleeves to ensure a good fit. I actually found a pair that fit my ears so snugly that almost all the ambient sound was blocked out. Great start!

I auditioned a variety of music through the 272s, including classical. The sound was spacious and detailed. And that wasn't just true for the uncompressed audio tracks. The 272s reproduced the sound accurately enough for me to hear all the details contained in my compressed soundfiles — and to hear the limitations of those files, too.

To my ears, the headphones really came through on acoustic tracks. Classical guitar sounded clean and natural, mandolin and stand-up bass in bluegrass songs had the right amount of warmth. But they also delivered on rock and rap tracks. Bass sounded deep and reverbrant, guitars and other electronic instruments kept their razor-sharp edge in the mix.

Sure, you can use the RE-272s like any other earbud headphones for on-the-go listening, but what makes them worth the investment are those times when you want to pay attention to your music and go deep into the songs. These headphones can take you there.
