About the Paradigm Shift Series Soundscape

David Brown

Taking sound bars to great heights

Most people look at sound bars as a way to get better sound from their TV. But if you're looking for one that aspires to greater sonic heights, check out the Paradigm Soundscape. Like most sound bars, it's a mammoth improvement over your TV's speakers — without mammoth-sized speakers cluttering your room. It goes several steps further by offering riveting multichannel sound with Paradigm Virtual Surround, so movie soundtracks really take shape in your room. Everything from drops of rain hitting the ground to raucous car chases to whispered dialogue will sound rich and clear. The Soundscape can also do wonders with music, delivering bona fide stereo imaging, deep bass without a subwoofer, and particularly tasty midrange.

Paradigm Soundscape sound bar

The Paradigm Soundscape offers stellar sound for movies and music. It's a perfect match for large-screen TVs.

Bringing movie sound to life

How does the Paradigm Soundscape deliver such vivid, dynamic sound with movies and TV shows? It starts with two important features: Dolby® Digital decoding and Paradigm Virtual Surround. The sound bar decodes the Dolby 5.1-channel surround sound coming from your Blu-ray player, cable box, or satellite receiver. It takes that information and uses sophisticated digital signal processing to reproduce it through the Soundscape's seven built-in amplifiers and speakers.

The real magic is how Paradigm Virtual Surround processing takes the information for the rear channels and creates spacious surround-like effects. You might catch guests looking around the room for speakers that aren't there.

Bluetooth offers wireless music listening with your smartphone

Subwoofer wireless receiver

An included wireless receiver lets you connect any powered sub to the Paradigm Soundscape without having to run a cable across your floor.

If you ever listen to music on a smartphone or tablet, then you can listen through the Paradigm Soundscape. It's got Bluetooth built-in, so you can stream music wirelessly from your device. Listen to songs stored on your phone or tablet, online radio, music services like Spotify®, audio from YouTube videos...virtually any audio source your device can play can be sent over Bluetooth to this sound bar.

The deep end

The Soundscape's bass response goes very low on its own. But if you crave a little more bass impact, the Soundscape makes it easy to add a powered subwoofer. It includes a wireless receiver, which allows you to turn any subwoofer into a wireless subwoofer. Just connect the wireless receiver to your sub's LFE input, sync the sound bar to the receiver with the remote, and you'll be basking in bombastic bass before you know it.

Features

Seven Speaker Array: The Paradigm Soundscape soundbar speaker incorporates a total of seven drivers, including three 1" aluminum dome tweeters and four 4" midrange/midbass woofers. The soundbar is split into separate channels inside the speaker cabinet; a center, left, and right channel. Each channel features its own isolated chamber and its own compliment of drivers. The center channel section consists of one 1" aluminum dome tweeter and two 4" midrange/midbass woofers. Each left and right channel section consists of one 1" aluminum dome tweeter and one 4" midrange/midbass woofer.  to ensure sound from all channels travel widely throughout the room. This type of design ensures sound from all channels travels widely and distinctly throughout your room.

  • Three 1" Aluminum Dome Tweeters: The Three aluminum dome tweeters with ferro-fluid cooling the voice coil radically improves power handling for excellent high frequency reproduction.
  • Four 4" Midrange/Midbass Woofers: The four 4" composite cone midrange/midbass woofers deliver a superb low-mass, high-stiffness ratio with excellent sound reproduction in the higher midrange and fast transient response.

Class-D Amplification with DSP: The Soundscape soundbar speaker use Class-D amplification with DSP (digital signal processing). Each driver is powered by is own 25W RMS (50W Peak) Class-D amplifier for dynamic sound performance. Paradigm's proprietary DSP platform uses sophisticated algorithms to shape frequency response so that even when the Soundscape soundbar speaker is playing loud, bass remains clear and musical.

Molded ABS Bass-Reflex Cabinet: The active soundbar speaker feature a molded ABS enclosure in a high-gloss black finish. The enclosure employs a bass reflex design with side-firing ports for greater efficiency and bigger bass response.

Dolby Digital Decoding + Paradigm Virtual Surround: The Soundscape soundbar speaker system decodes Dolby Digital through its optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital inputs and provides virtual surround sound via proprietary DSP technology, known as "Paradigm Virtual Surround". In most systems without dedicated surround/rear speakers much of the impact of surround sound is lost, since there are no physical speaker channels to deliver it.  Paradigm Virtual Surround processing ensures none of this impactful sound is lost. Through sophisticated mathematical algorithms, Paradigm Virtual Surround gathers all the neglected sonic information in a central sweet spot, then redirects it into the front left and right channels of the soundbar speaker, sending it out into the room in a way that creates the auditory illusion of surround sound with an enveloping audio experience.

Note: The Paradigm Virtual Surround mode can be turned off for 2-channel stereo music listening.

Analog + Digital Inputs: The Paradigm Soundscape soundbar system offers three digital inputs and one analog input. The soundbar speaker is fitted with two optical (toslink) digital audio inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital audio input which support 2-channel PCM & Dolby Digital. The soundbar is also fitted with a stereo RCA input for connection of an analog device (2Ch PCM only).

Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Audio w/ aptX: The Paradigm Soundscape features built-in Bluetooth (A2DP/AVRCP) so you can wirelessly stream stored music and music apps on your Apple device (iPod/iPhone/iPad), Android smartphone/tablet, or other compatible device to the soundbar speaker system. It even offers aptX audio coding in order two wirelessly deliver CD-quality sound from select Android (OS 4.0+) mobile devices to the system. You'll be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from the Soundtrack 2 system's IR remote. You will still continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device for advance music navigation and to view song/artist information.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Paradigm Soundscape.

Sub Output: The Paradigm Soundscape soundbar speaker is also fitted with a mono-RCA sub output for connection of an external powered subwoofer. In addition, the Soundscape features a built-in wireless sub-out transmitter and includes a wireless subwoofer receiver for a wireless connection (up to 50") of a powered sub.

Remote Control: The Paradigm Soundscape soundbar system comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation. The remote turns the system's power on/off, switches between inputs, and controls volume up/down. The remote can also be used to control basic music playback functions (Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) of your Bluetooth-paired device. You can also program the system's volume functions to operate from your TV's remote control.

Mounting Options: The Soundscape soundbar speaker should be centered directly above or below your television. The soundbar speaker can be placed on a flat-surface above or below your flat-panel TV using the supplied feet. You can also mount the soundbar speaker to the wall using the included wall-mount bracket with keyhole slots (mounting screws not supplied).

Note: >When mounting the soundbar speaker make sure to set the "Install" setting to either "Wall" or "Shelf" for optimized performance based on your type of application.

I tested against the iPad 4 and the soundbar connected easily. If Apple TV 4 uses the same bluetooth technology it should connect. Not sure about Echo Dot.

Q
The audio is out of sync with the video coming out of the TV. This happens when I connect the speaker directly to the cable box via optical cable. The TV is connected to the cable box via HDMI. How do I fix this?
