Music Hall USB-1 Turntable

Written By Brian, Lawrence, KS on Sunday, November 09, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, so good. Very quick delivery, easy assembly. Great sound. Solid turntable for the price. Haven't had a chance to try the USB - software side of this player yet, but that is a great option for down the road.

Pros: Easy set-up, great sound, ability to transfer LP to CD or digital files. Easy pitch adjustment.

Cons: Wish it had an automatic return so I didn't have to manually replace the tone arm at the end of the record.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the clean lines and playability of this turntable...great product for the money.

Pros: Even my older vinyls play great.

Cons: Instructions could have been better... Photos are of help. I went on line to figure out to assemble the tone arm.

First turntable

Written By Scott, Nashville, TN on Saturday, November 01, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first turntable purchase and very happy with it overall. The built-in amplifier is a plus for the simplicity and 'testing the waters," of vinyl without major investment in components. The sound was full, rich and clear playing daft punk albums. While turning, I can notice on the strobe markings on the plate, that there is some oscillation. This creates no perceptible audible consequence to my ears, however. I have no specific negative critique-- I am happily satisfied, and in general reserve a 5-star rating for astoundingly excellent product-encounters. I have not tried the USB yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really happy with this purchase! The sound is really better than I remember my old Lp's sounding like. I think the fact that it's a belt drive serves to isolate the motor noise.

Pros: Good build quality for this price range. Very clean sound. Easy set- up. pitch control is also a plus.

Cons: The only thing I'm not sure of is how the plastic base will look after some wear.

A great turntable!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A wonderful product, enabling my wife and I (Weiss Duo) to hear some vinyl 33 LP's that we made in 1966, and many other great LP's that we have in our collection.

Pros: Unlike the old turntables, it has very low surface noise, and the quality of the sound is beautiful. Thanks for fast delivery and excellent tech support in setting it up.

Cons: No cons.

Great deal.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed to upgrade my linear tracking turntable to a newer model with USB output. This unit looks great and sounds great. There is no turntable noise or hum. This was a great investment for me and back to downloading from about 700 albums that I still had from over the years that are still in mint condition. Running through 500 Watt amp into my teak wood speakers from the 70's make this sound like I am sitting in a concert.

Pros: Sounds great. Easy software setup for downloading vinyl to I-tunes. Tone arm balance is absolutely dead on and the cue drops stylus onto the vinyl very gently. The dust cover fits snug and while lifting up or closing it has a very smooth feel.

Cons: A return on the tone arm would have been a nice touch. I had to buy a longer USB cord than the 6 ft cord provided. I guess it's ok if you can set up your turntable within 6 ft of your computer but I didn't have that choice. I did find a 15 ft cord online for $4.50 which shipped the same day.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first turntable that I've owned for a really long time. The setup was a breeze. I like the USB connection to digitize my analog library. The software that came with the turntable is free (GNU license) and really easy to get plug-ins online. I have placed my turntable about 4' from my speakers (only because of my living room layout) and I can crank it up pretty loud before the excellent shock absorption starts to feed back. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase and, of course, the Crutchfield service was flawless.

Pros: The mid-range price was perfect my budget. The appearance is sleek and looks good with the rest of my stuff. It sounds great and easy to use.

Cons: I don't really have anything unfavorable to say about this at this time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my man and he loves it. However, he is not very patient when it comes to software so it was put on me to figure out.. Quite complicated software system but worth it when you put time into it.

Pros: Hook up was easy, sturdy, anti-skate.

Cons: Only feature that is really missing on this is a automatic return... that would make it PERFECT...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am new to the whole record player and vinyl scene. My new fascination required me to purchase a record player/ turntable but as with most amateurs, i had no idea where to begin. I began to pore through multiple websites for turntables. I wanted a good turntable for a reasonable price. I didnt want to spend $100 for a crappy one so i sought for something within the 200-300 range. I found this music hall usb 1 and decided to do my research on it. It has great reviews for an entry level enthusiast as myself and at a good price. Shipping was totally fast and free. you cant beat that. and its been working great. I have a Bose stereo system that is sorta out dated. Still sounds great. I might be required to update my system. but other than that its great and totally recommend one to any new comer.

Pros: great look and easy set up. dust cover is a great plus.

Cons: nothing

Great Turntable/Great Price

Written By Mark F, Valley Springs, CA on Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had purchased 2 less expensive USB turntables and had to return both. Spending a little bit more for the Music Hall USB-1 was more than worth it! Very good and solid build, easy to set-up. We have it connected to Bose Companion II powered speakers and the sound is fantastic. Having a bit of trouble getting the Audacity software to work with our HP laptop, but I'm sure it will get sorted out.

Pros: Solid design. Looks great and is easy to set-up.

Cons: Audacity software is a bit tricky to get to work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice turntable. The setup was really easy with good instructions. The stylus is good. It is pretty rugged, too. I used the USB input from the turntable to digitize some of my old vinyl. The supplied software worked well, also. If you are looking to digitize some of your old vinyl without breaking the bank, this is a good value.

Pros: Easy to set up. Rugged. Works as advertised.

Cons: None, really. Pretty happy with this rig.

A Great Turntable -- Very Happy

Written By RickyA, Sammamish, WA on Saturday, December 29, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this USB turntable specifically to convert a collection of LPs, some titles dating back to the 50's, to MP3 format, and it delivered exactly what I wanted. It's a beautifully designed, engineered and constructed unit and I am very pleased with its clean, distortion-free playback into my stero receiver via its PHONO jacks, and into my Windows 7 PC via USB. The AudioTechnica phono cartridge is a bonus that, in large part, enables the superb performance. In the days before digital stero when much of music was on vinyl, I always used AT cartridges because of their very high quality and performance. The included paper Instruction Manual is a little brief, but adequately got me through setup and into my first recording session. I was able to convert the music content of an entire LP on the first try using the included "Audacity USB Recording and Sound Editing Software". The software includes detailed browser-based Quick Help and a user's Manual. I should note the Audacity software requires updating after installaton to version 2.0.2, and it initially lacks MP3 encoding software due to patent restrictions. However, free MP3 encoding software is easily downloaded and installed on the PC. It took a while to discover in the Help and Manual sections just where the program update and MP3 encoder software was available for download. Once the MP3 encoder was installed, I was able to export files to MP3 and import them into my iTunes Music Library. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: See my review.

Cons: None - love it!

Music Hall USB-1

Written By Ben L, Austin, TX on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Very good turntable for the price. Sounds great and transfers my vinyl to to iTunes. So I'm happy with it.

Pros: Very easy to assemble; I was digitizing records a half an hour after opening the box.

Cons: The tone arm doesn't return after finishing a record. Not a problem when I'm using the turntable to digitize records but a minor hassle when I'm just listing to records.

USB turn table

Written By Tim, Tampa, FL on Thursday, December 13, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really good Turntable, and for the Money a good buy I would recommend. The only thing that I would like to have see is the ability of starting/stopping the player from the software. as it is you have to go to the Turn table and place the Needle on the record and then go back and start recording. this can be a bit challenging if you have it connected to both your computer and a Home sound system.

Pros: Well Built, Great sound, easy software to use.

Cons: Doesn't have automatic/remote start/stop function

Music Hall USB-1

Written By Will, Bismarck, ND on Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's amazing how good my old vinyl's sound! This is my first turntable since the old days; my muscle memory is still there- removing the LP from the sleeve, holding it by its edges, gently squaring up the center hole with the turntable spindle, lining up the tone arm with the first grooves-that familiar snap when the needle first makes contact -got to remember to turn the volume down! The USB-1 performs flawlessly; my only gripe is that there's no automatic return of the tone arm at the end of the record-this is a totally manual turntable. The USB-1 has a built in preamp, which is good because my receiver (NAD C725BEE) has no preamp "out" for a turntable. I have yet to try the USB connection for digitizing albums.

Pros: Quiet; precise pitch; built in preamp; great sound--somewhat attributable to the NAD, to be sure. Pitch control (RPM adjustment)

Cons: No automatic return of the tone arm at the end of the record, resulting in lost of clicks and pops until you get over to the turntable to lift the tone arm.

Wonderful machine - Superbly Designed and Very User-Friendly

Written By MusicLover, Rockville, MD on Monday, October 29, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Music Hall USB-1 turn-table is a piece of electronic equipment that performs exactly as promised. In fact, for this review to be absolutely accurate, Crutchfield would have to furnish me about two more stars!! I have rarely used a machine that was so beautifully designed (dare one say flawless?) and made me so happy so quickly: Within two days of receiving my Music Hall USB-1 turntable, I was playing LPs into the provided Audacity software, and converting that into inputs to my iTunes library. The turntable is already fitted with an Audio-Technica 3600L cartridge (so that doesn't need to be installed), and the instructions clearly describe how to make the other adjustments (anti-skating, fine-tuning turntable speed, and cartridge balance). The turntable is completely manual (power switch, turntable ON-OFF, cartridge elevation lever), and has a strobe function for exact turntable speed tracking. If fact, the turntable is so good (incidental to the USB function) that it may quickly become my primary turntable for record-playing enjoyment

Pros: Cartridge provided, ease of use, preamp not neded, easy to use software too. Many adjustments possible (speed, anti-skating, cartridge weight balance).

Cons: Needs additional software in order to burn CDs (but that is found free on the Internet)

Get everything you’ll need to enjoy your new Music Hall USB-1

The cables that are included with some components are not the best quality. You can get dramatically more lifelike sound with better audio cables.
Keep the music playing with replacement cartridges and other accessories.
Protect your investment from power surges and interference.
The turntable has a built-in phono preamp, which means you can even hook up powered speakers for a simple high-quality system.
Keep your records clean and static-free, or prevent disruptive vibration, for the best performance.

I have not. Am using this solely to rip vinyl to mp3. [ John  Nov 07, 2014 ]
That little pre-amp by Teac would go directly to the speakers and the sound would be awesome! If your not blown away they will take it back I'm sure the are a great place to buy from.....good luck ......james [ JAMES M  Nov 05, 2014 ]
I am no Audio expert but there is no preAmp on this model. I connect directly to my computer using the USB lead and play using Window Media Player or record using Audacity software or I can connect to my old Sanyo amplifier and speakers. [ DR E D M  Nov 04, 2014 ]

I'm sure you know the functionality of the Music Hall USB-1; therefore, your equipment (i.e., receiver or computer) will ultimately determine the final sound of any phonograph record. The unit is outstanding and should be paired with a quality system. [ ROBERT T  Mar 14, 2014 ]
Sorry, but I have not used the internal phono preamp, nor the USB output. We have have the table connected via the phono output to an old school stereo receiver that has its own phono input. As such, I can't really comment on how the internal pre would compare to a low cost external preamp. That said, I would not expect a significant difference, but that is just speculation on my part. While the construction of the table is certainly not top of the line, it is suitable for its intended purpose (my daughter's first TT). I would think the weak link would be included cartridge. [ BRIAN  Mar 06, 2014 ]
I can't answer that exact question, but . . . My son has this a college and is using Bose Companion III powered speakers. All I can say is this setup sounds great. For the price, I think this would be the entry point for a quality turntable...other cheaper ones we looked at were not even close to this quality. [ MARK S  Mar 06, 2014 ]
I usually save mine in AIFF when I download music online, which I can import into iTunes without any problem. When I rip CD's for import into iTunes, I save the files using the Apple Lossless protocol. [ SCOTT  Dec 20, 2013 ]
The supplied Audacity software will allow you to save your files in several different formats (including WAV). [ Jeff  Dec 13, 2013 ]  Staff
Thanks you. The tuner USB-1 it funny, I like. [ JOSE D  Dec 14, 2013 ]
Hi Rick, You can format in wave, too. You can use the Nero software or Windows Media Player. Give it a try! [ ROBERT T  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Sorry, I can't answer that. [ BERTRAM F  Dec 11, 2013 ]
The supplied software, Audacity, will allow you to save your files in several different format, and WAV is one of them. When you transfer the audio from the turntable to the PC, it will be in be in .AUP format (proprietary), but you can quickly export it to the format of your choice. [ BILL  Dec 11, 2013 ]
So far the turntable is playing vinyl through a pair of Bose Companion II speakers (sounds GREAT!)...not yet used for converting. In my past experience with an Ion turntable, most conversion software produces a .wav file natively...then converts to MP3. This would be a software issue, so check the manual on the software you are using to see what your options are for conversion. [ MARK S  Dec 11, 2013 ]
Unfortunately, I can't say for sure. The TT is a Christmas gift and has not yet been opened. I did look at the product manual, and it is somewhat ambiguous on the subject. The USB output is specified as 16BIT 44.1KHz or 48KHz USB SELECTABLE. That would imply Wave files, but w/o trying it, I am not certain. I suspect the output is Wave, which can then be converted within Audacity if you wanted to, but I think your best bet may be an email or a call to Music Hall. [ BRIAN  Dec 11, 2013 ]
