Our take on the BEACON Audio Blazar

by Ralph Graves
Beacon

It's small, simple, and sounds way bigger than it looks. That's the Beacon Audio Blazar portable powered speaker. If you have room for a coffee mug on your desk, then you have room for the Blazar. Pair it wirelessly to your smartphone or other Bluetooth-enabled device, and you're ready to party. The Blazar has two full-range drivers that team up with a down-firing passive radiator for clear, full sound spread out in a 360° area.

You can actually connect 2 Blazars together wirelessly, and assign the left and right signals to the 2 Blazars to create true stereo sound.

Beacon Blazar Bluetooth speaker

Quick pairing with NFC

The system uses Bluetooth and has NFC (Near Field Communication) built-in. Just swipe your NFC-compatible smartphone or tablet close to the Blazar to pair and start streaming music right away. You can also pair the Blazar with other Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as a portable game console or laptop computer.

High-quality speakerphone

If a call comes in on your smartphone while you're listening to your tunes, you've got options. Answer the call and use the Blazar as a speakerphone to talk hands-free. You can also terminate the call, or just ignore it — all with the Blazar's raised control buttons.

The simple control button array on the top not only lets you adjust volume, but also sends play, pause, and skip track commands to your paired device. The Blazar's built-in rechargeable battery delivers up to twelve hours of non-stop music. A minijack input and cable lets you plug in non-Bluetooth portables, such as a portable game console or CD player.

Features

Bluetooth Technology: The Blazar by Beacon features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology for your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablets, computers, players, and other devices. It supports both wireless audio streaming and hands-free communication

  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming:  The Beacon Blazar supports A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) and AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile). You can wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, laptop/computer, or other device to the Phoenix Bluetooth speaker. It even allows you to control Play/Pause & Next/Previous Track functions of your Bluetooth-enabled device. You'll be able to listen to stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled device through the Beacon Blazar.
  • Hands-Free Communication: The Blazar features a noise-canceling microphone and a answer button so you can answer phone calls, talk on Skype, or use Facetime from the speaker. Using the built-in in mic, you can carry on your side of the conversation while the other party is heard through the Blazar's speakers. The microphone is noise-canceling, meaning it blocks out room noise to ensure your phone call is clear and crisp. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to view video calls, dial a phone number, and control advanced phone functions.
Note: The Blazar can be paired to multiple devices, but not at the same time. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Blazar Bluetooth speaker.

Simple Pairing w/ NFC: This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. The speaker also supports NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology for pairing. Simply tap your NFC-enabled Android smartphone to the NFC tag on the side of the speaker for instant pairing with the Beacon Blazar; NFC is only available in select Android smartphones. The Blazar can be paired with up to 8 devices (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the Blazar will automatically re-connect to the last device used when in wireless range (40').

360-Degree Projection: The Blazar portable Bluetooth speaker give you a multi-directional listening experience through two 1.9375" drivers and an incorporated passive radiator subwoofer design. The tight low-end response is articulated by the innovative shape of the cabinet and deliberate utilization of the surface on which the Blazar is placed, to create a balanced and natural sound.

Dual Stereo Pairing: Not only can you connect two Blazars together wirelessly via Bluetooth, but you can separate the Left and Right signal between the two Blazars for true stereo sound.

Aux Input/Analog Output: The Blazar by Beacon is fitted with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting an external audio source which features an audio or headphone output. The Blazar is also equipped with a 3.5mm analog output for daisy-chaining an additional powered speaker with a Aux input.

Rechargeable Battery: The Blazar Bluetooth speaker uses a built-in rechargeable Lithium battery that lasts up to 12 hours. It can be charged from a free USB (type-A) port on your computer using the included micro-USB to USB charging cable.

Nice, but could be louder

Written By JP, Washington, DC on Monday, June 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already was a happy owner of the Beacon Phoenix. I was looking for an upgrade -- namely something a little louder and with more bass. From what I read, the Blazar seemed like the ideal choice.

Sound quality is very good. There is noticeably more bass than the Phoenix, but I could use more. It's certainly not bass heavy. (I just got it, so maybe it will open up more). As for volume, it gives me what I need indoors, but I need more when I'm outdoors. I don't have a large backyard, and with a just a few friends over it doesn't quite do the job.
Pros:
Design, compact size, and overall sound quality
Cons:
Volume

As advertised

Written By Rick, Bettendorf, IA on Friday, June 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Performs as described and advertised. Was looking for a high quality, simple bluetooth speaker to put on the deck while dining during summer evenings. Fits the purpose perfectly. Sounds is quite full for the size of the unit (which is about the size of a big coffee cup). Bass sound is decent (again, given the size), but it is not deep. I would like a deeper bass given the use outdoors, but it is adequate, and the range more than makes up for the slight shortcoming at the lower end. Bluetooth connectivity performs as expected, although my iPad and iPhones don't connect automatically as one would expect (as they do with the BT in my car). Only a minor annoyance.
Pros:
Small packaging that delivers a fairly big sound.
Cons:
Lack of auto connect bluetooth.

Blazar blows my mind

Written By Ray, Indianapolis on Wednesday, April 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first heard the Blazar on my friends' kitchen counter I could not believe what I was hearing and insisted on knowing where the sub woofer was hiding. Unbelievably it was all packed into this beautiful cube emitting the sound in front of me. Needless to say, I ordered one immediately from Crutchfield and the rest is aural history. I highly, highly, highly recommend the Blazar. You will not believe your ears when you hear it. Oh, by the way, I am getting another one soon.
Pros:
Beautiful Sound, deep bass, very smooth over the frequency spectrum, great casing
Cons:
That I don't own several more of them.

1 question already asked

What is the speaker output wattage? Is it loud enough for a large room? If two are used for stereo are they the same loudness or is one quieter than the other? Thanks. [ MURF  May 10, 2014 ]

  • very displeased with speaker loud if you are in a 10x10 room but that's about it I thought by reading the reviews this was a great speaker I was at a local store today and they had a ar for 99.00 and it will put this speaker to shame I will never trust the reviews from here again. [ LISA   May 12, 2014 ]
  • Thanks for the info. I did order one for use on my Lanai and will order a second if it works well. [ MURF   May 11, 2014 ]
  • I don't know the output wattage but two of them are sufficient for a large room. They both output the same volume. I use mine as speakers to link to my iPad in a vacation home so I don't need a separate hi if system.. [ David   May 10, 2014 ]
