Our take on the Beacon Audio Phoenix

It's small, simple, and sounds way bigger than it looks. That's the Beacon Audio Phoenix portable powered speaker system. It's about the size of a coffee mug, making it easy to slip into your backpack or handbag. Pair it wirelessly to your smartphone or other Bluetooth-enabled device, and you're ready to party. The Phoenix has two titanium-core full-range drivers that team up with a down-firing passive radiator for clear,  surprisingly full sound.

Small enough to take anywhere.

And operation is simple, too. The large touch interface on the top not only lets you adjust volume, but also sends play, pause, and skip track commands to your paired device.  The built-in rechargeable battery delivers up to eight hours of non-stop music. A provided tangle-resistant cable lets you plug in non-Bluetooth portables, such as a portable game console or CD player.

Crystal clear sound. Loud and easy to operate. Love it.

Great Sound for its size

Written by: JV from Charlottesville, VA on July 16, 2013

I bought this speaker for my daughter to use in her room and when she travels. It sounds better than I had expected. It does get loud enough, but does lack a little in bass but has plenty for the size that it is and the music that my daughter listens to. She uses this for both her iPod Nano (wired) and her Samsung Tablet (Bluetooth). I like that it is easy to use and once set up on Bluetooth, automatically remembers when her Tablet is turned on. Controls on top are a little funky because you have to use the same buttons for volume and track, but is not an issue when using Bluetooth because it can all be controlled by the Tablet. The Beacon is pretty well built and is somewhat ruggedized. The rubber coating around the speaker allows it to take falls and bouncing around in a bag when being carried. The charging of the device is simple and straight forward. For my daughter's use, this is perfect! For use when camping or just hanging out when you do not have access to a radio, it is also great!

Pros: size multifunction (wired/Bluetooth) great sound for size

Cons: minimal bass

Gets the job done

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ultimately I felt that $100 was too much for the product. Paying $50 from Crutchfield makes it worth while. The Bluetooth range is a bit limited and less than reported. Sound is excellent for the size. One weird issue is that you can't but the speaker into standby mode if you have something plugged into the aux in. Very satisfied with the sound and overall quality

Pros: size

Cons: none

Pros: Price, ease of use, small size, and portability.

Cons: None

Decent Sound In a Little Package

Written by: Jim from Central VA on July 2, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a neat little bluetooth speaker with incredible power especially when you consider its small size. It has two primary strengths. First its convenient and easy to use; pairing it with an iPod using bluetooth is quick and easy. Second, it has great power. Small speakers tend to have a low volume threshold, turn them up and distortion kicks in quickly. Not these speakers, turn these up and they remain clear while filling a small room with decent sound. That being said, the sound quality is good for their size but if you are looking for really good sound then you need to look at something larger, less mobile and less convenient (and most likely more expensive). Obviously, what these speakers lack most is bass and depth; but that should go without saying considering their small size. Bottom line is these speakers do what they are designed to do very well.

Pros: Convenience and power.

Cons: Sound lacks bass and depth.

This Speaker Will Blow You Away!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this speaker over several other ones. I'm so glad I did because this speaker made me do a double take. I couldn't believe the sound coming from this speaker. Actually, I own two of these and I have to say these speakers are definitely worth the price. After hearing the first one I knew I had to buy another. I wish I would have bought both from Crutchfield. Anyway, to sum up this review, I'll say, there isn't a better sounding speaker out there as far as size. This speaker is really a 2.1 system. It has 2 speakers and a down firing passive radiator that handles the bass. And this speaker has nice bass. The mids and the highs are just as good too. A VERY GOOD one of a kind speaker. It speaks for itself !

Pros: Sound , Looks, Build, Color, Design, Battery Life, Cool Blue Light, Everything.

This is a great little speaker with big sound. I paired it with my iPod Touch and now when I turn the speaker on, it connects automatically and is ready to play. Charging it using USB is simple and the battery seems to last several hours. I'm considering buying another one.

Pros: Small, great sound, auto connects using Bluetooth and looks good.

Cons: Because it is so small, it is limited on max volume.

This product exceeded my expectations. Great design, easy to travel with, and sound quality is best ive heard compared to other products in this price range. Also Beacon automatically connects to the last device it was using when you turn it on so there is no need to pick up my iphone. I brought this on my cruise and it was very convenient.

Pros: Small design, powerful speaker, easy to use buttons, remembers last device so just turn Beacon on and music will start, long lasting battery, great for traveling.

Got mine on sale so that was a bonus. Pretty decent sound. Very portable. Controls are a little finicky but it does control the device so that's nice. Overall nice for what it is.

Pros: Small, light, loud, and seems to be well built,

Cons: Sometimes the volume adjustment advances or starts a song over since it uses a common button.

Cons: I get intermittent Bluetooth reception when I move around quickly using my smartphone (within 20 feet) as the source. I can live with this.

Great speaker for the money, although not as loud and not as much base and sound quality as Bose. However for $200 less its well worth the money for the use in the golf cart and around the pool that I bought it for.

Pros: Value and ease of use

Cons: Loudness and lack of bass

Rare case of Form Factor trumps Sound Quality

Written by: tomh from Philadelphia, PA on January 28, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Reviewers and customers all love this little speaker and so do I. It's tiny and handy and its convenience way out-weighs they slightly lacking sound quality. The bluetooth is flawless (except of course for iOS6's annoying drop-outs) and also well thought-out. Rather than having to go into iOS settings and connect to the speaker each time you want to use it, you just hold the power button down on the Beacon for about 10 seconds (kinda long, but it's still quicker than the alternative) and it auto connects to the last bluetooth transmitter it was connected to! And to be able to skip songs from the speaker itself is also surprisingly convenient -- can leave the iPad safely closed and covered out of harm's way. The bass is what I expected... subtle, but in a quiet room, you can hear that the little passive radiator is thumpin' pretty strong. It actually sounds like it has more low-end range than physically possible. So that is acceptable. But what is a little lacking is the high end. Treble is clean and natural, but there is little crisp "high-hat range" sizzle. When I run an EQ-able app, it does create the crispness I like, but most apps in iOS don't have equalization built in. Movie channel stream apps, rdio, grooveshark... non have EQ's built in. To really make this little box shine, an added internal digital EQ would really supe it up! If it has that feature, I'd have nothing to complain about. It's be perfect. But the sound is still very good.

Pros: Form factor... couldn't be more convenient. Really small, really consistent and very cool looking. Bluetooth is flawless and well engineered. Sound is loud and clean. Fills a small room with sound.

Cons: Could really use an internal EQ (two band would be plenty - or even just a treble adjustment since I figure bass is maxed out just shy of distortion). High end slightly lacking in intensity.

Packs a lot of punch in a little package! You won't believe the sound you get from such a small speaker. It's small enough to carry anywhere, the battery life is great. It's easy to use, What's not to like?

Pros: Sound, Sound, Sound, size and battery life.

Cons: None

Great Little Speaker!

Written by: Mel from Iowa on January 3, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product. Amazing sound for such a small speaker. No 'tinny' sound, good clarity. The bass is amazing and will actually shake the table you set it on. You can crank the volume up REALLY loud. Battery life seemed to last even longer than advertized. I would highly recommend this product! It is very reasonably priced so you get a lot for your money. Very small and portable.

Pros: Amazing sound. Great clarity. Nice bass. Can get REALLY loud volume. Long battery life. Great deal for the price.

Cons: Only downside is if you want to use it to listen to the radio via your ipod or whatever, you do need a cable connection. Otherwise, listening to the rest of your music is, of course, wireless.

For a small speaker it sure sounds great. I was looking for a small cordless speaker to play songs off my iPad with and this one works great. Great sound and the bass sounds great also.

Pros: Small size, no cords required to use it.

Cons: It does move (slide)slightly when in use from the thump of the bass. Be sure to clean the rubber feet to prevent this. Other than that this speaker rocks!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sounding, of course no real low end, very portable and non-invasive in most home and car environments. Better than most computer speakers that do not include the separate subwoofer box. Would highly recommend for anyone desiring a nice portable speaker with sufficient volume for most uses. Extremely surprised by volume it can produce without distortion.

Pros: Size, sound quality, portability, battery length.

Cons: Some difficulty with on off button, you have to hold it down longer than you might anticipate five seconds being, would prefer it were a separate button. Slightly complex regarding initial bluetooth set up since it flashes when it is searching for any signal, and flashes, but much faster when in detect/pairing mode.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Holy smokes this speaker howls and screams complete awesomeness!!! I can't even count how many bands and folks I've already turned on to this amazing small package that packs a solid punch! I love amazing people w/ how cool this Phoenix speaker is by using it at work at SiriusXM in my office, at the house and even on vacation! I was a judge for a big "Battle Of The Bands" contest last month and I used this monster to listen to all 30 finalists' music & videos one night in order to make my decision! I even used my Phoenix to power our family's recent yard sale in NJ and while freaking neighbors out w/ loud hard rock I also impressed a few who said they were going to buy one too! OK, one more story, my wife and I used our Phoenix on vacation in Puerto Rico and blasted it in our killer room AND on the gorgeous beach of San Juan! Even though this speaker is sexy looking, my wife still was waaaay hotter! Haha... Anyways, I rarely write reviews on stuff I order, but I really felt like sharing my satisfaction w/ this purchase w/ the world! Yesterday I saw some commercial for some subpar product and it got me fired up about Beacon and how I want people to know about this thing! Thanks for reading this and hope it helps ya w/ your decision on buying this beast! You can thank me later! Peace in a celebrated cloud of music....

Pros: SOUND - SOUND - SOUND and... sexy look, small design, smart design, ease of use, long battery use, great price, light weight, cool name (I'm from Phoenix AZ!)

Cons: none!

Excellent audio quality and extremely portable!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Phoenix..... Dear God this thing is awesome!!!! Very rich sound in a small enclosure. That is the best way to describe it. I work in the construction business and am around power tools and various machinery all day. I brought the Phoenix to work this past week and a large amount of my coworkers could not believe the quality and the volume that it produced. I mainly used it to stream Spotify through the Phoenix's easy to use Bluetooth capability or pluged in my iPod to the 3.5mm jack in the back (all while cranking the volume and not experiencing distortion). Another thing that I liked are the rubber feet on the bottom, it stayed put on ladders while working, which is what I want from a Bluetooth speaker. All in all this is the most ideal Bluetooth speaker I have used to date. It's an absolute must have while hanging-out with your friends or traveling to remote parts of the world.

Pros: Extremely high audio quality + Stylish/Design + Makes heads turn + Easy to use + Very portable + Bluetooth & AUX 3.5mm are harmonious

Cons: The fact that you have not bought one yet..... Get on it!!!!!

It's cute! (In a completely sexy, relevant, manly sort of way)

Written by: Sarami from Salt Lake City, UT on November 21, 2012

OK. It's confessional time. I bought this because it was... cute. And it IS! Very cute. But that's not my confession. My confession is that I'm not actually a very technical sort of person. So why, you might ask, is a decidedly un-technical person writing a review about such a sleek, sexy little nugget of sonic wizardry? I guess I'm writing because probably not everyone considering the Phoenix is a gadget guru, a troubador of tech. Maybe you are secretly oblivious about the difference between Amps and hertzezezes. Maybe you, like me, thought that "subwoofer" was some kind of Latin code word for "underdog". It's OK!! With this speaker, you won't even have to BS your way through half-memorized tech specs to try to convince your friends you're hip and savvy. You just have to casually pull this baby OUT OF YOUR POCKET and you are instantly cool by association! In all seriousness, though, you don't have to know *why* the Phoenix is so cool to enjoy this awesome little device. I have excellent ears (musician!) and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of sound such a small speaker achieved, even the bass. AND it's practical in both price and usage. It's even a good option for me around the house instead of headphones-- I can keep it right next to me and there's no ear fatigue. The portability is a huge plus, too-- love that! I can create my own netflix cellphone home theater!'s cute!

Pros: *Looks! (you know you're shallow, too!) Sleek, simplistic (in a good way) design. Love the blue and black combo! Well-made. *Size and portability *Good sound for small speaker *Bang for your buck

Cons: Little bit of a learning curve on operation, though it really is quite simple after the first time or two. Would like if the volume controls on the speaker were more responsive. It's easier to adjust the volume through your device.

Cons: Haven't found any cons.

Great big full sound, light wight, looks pretty durable, sexy looking product too, so it doesn't have to hide behinds stuff on the shelf, it can be center stage.... not to mention it's so easy to use, my mom could figure it out. I highly recommend this product, unless of course, you hate music, then you probably wont like this.

Huge Sound/Portable Size

Written by: Big J from Phoenix, AZ on November 7, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received my Beacon Phoenix today. All I can say is "Wow". I read some reviews online before purchasing, and although the reviews were good, I wasn't sure what I'd REALLY get for the $99. I'm so stoked on this little speaker. I'm a bit of a home audio/ music geek, so I feel like I have a decent perspective on what good sound is. I have a larger ipod dock for home use from one of the bigger brands and I paid $250+ for it. I have it side by side right now with the Phoenix and although slightly less deep in the bass range, due to it's size, the Phoenix sounds as good as the other speaker/ipod dock that's 3x its size. Of course the wireless bluetooth aspect of the device is very cool as well. Aside from just having something more portable that sounded great, my purpose in buying something this size was really two fold: 1. I'm on the road a lot for work and wanted something that didn't take up a ton of room in my travel bag. 2. I also do onsite client presentations that require good sound for multimedia presentations from a laptop. About the size of a softball, the Phoenix more than meets those needs. It's has great clarity at high volumes and an awesome dynamic range. I can't personally attest to its longevity, but the box says that it has a 1000 day warranty, so hopefully that means it has some mileage! It's hard to get to geeked-out over anything that's $99, but I'll let this purchase be an exception.

Pros: * Great balance of sound and sIze * great price for what you get in * Bluetooth enabled * 1000 day warranty * Durable material. doesn't feel "cheap" * Packaged with USB and Auxiliary cable. Cool bonus considering it's already wireless bluetooth. * Volume and track control on the device itself.

Cons: The touch controls on top might initially be confusing, but not hard to figure out and get used to. Not a big issue.
