Tough earbuds with a little versatility

BOOM Spooners earbud headphones

The Spooners are water- and dust-resistant, making them great for outdoor use (White model shown).

The BOOM Spooners are as unique as their name, and tougher than they sound. Designed for use outdoors and on the go, these lightweight earbuds are water- and dust-resistant, so they can handle just about anything you can. The earbud design allows you to enjoy music while remaining aware of your surroundings — perfect for biking, skateboarding, and any other activity for which you need to stay alert. But for those times when you'd rather have more noise-isolation, the Spooners come with a pair of sport tips. Just pop them on the earpieces and you'll get enhanced noise-isolation as well as a more secure fit.

Spoon 'em

Why Spooner? Because when you're not listening, they are easy to store by "spooning" them together. The earpieces feature magnetic backs, so they stay locked together, ideal for wrapping the cord around and keeping them easy to store and easy to unwrap, rather than untying the tangled knot most earbuds turn into in your pocket.

The Spooners come with a built-in remote and microphone on the cable, so you can take calls with an iPhone® as well as control music playback and volume with any Apple® device.

Product Highlights:

  • detachable sports tip provide more secure fit during exercise or intense movement
  • 3-button in-line remote for music playback and volume control with iPhone, iPod®, and iPad®
  • built-in microphone on remote for taking calls with an iPhone
  • earpieces connect magnetically for easy storage

At The very least, it's working.

I only bought this for the mic, when I have to use Skype and such. Coz my beat pro is too huge if I have to use it for video calling. Everything is working. The sound level is okay and the mic seems okay too, but, that's it. If your expecting anything else, say use it with your iPod. You'll be greatly disappointed. This is by far the worst headset for music listening. Zero bass to speak of. As in there's not even a hint of bass. I had a $7 dollar earphone that sound better than this. So the money you'll be spending is just for the design and the mic function.

Product Research

Overview: Spooners by BOOM (Born On Original Motives) are stylish water-resistant earbud headphones. Part of the R4A (Ready 4 Anything) line, Spooners have a unique magnetic nesting design that allow them to fit together (or "spoon") for neat storage. A pair of sport tips is included for use during rigorous activity.

Materials: Spooners are made of durable plastics that can withstand everyday and extreme abuse. The water-resistant materials make them perfect for use in the rain, the shower, or any harsh environments. Spooners are IP Level 4-rated for water-resistance. Spooners are shock resistant as well.

In-line Remote/Microphone: The 1.2-meter (46") cord includes an in-line 3-button control and microphone for use with most smartphones. Spooners are certified as "Made for iPod, iPhone, and iPad." Playback controls for iPod, iPhone, and iPad include play/pause, next/previous track, fast forward/fast reverse, and volume +/-. Phone controls for iPhone include answer call, hang up call, decline incoming call, use call waiting, and use voice activation features. Playback and phone controls for other devices are more limited than those of Apple i-devices.

Storage: Spooners' patent-pending nested magnetic design lets you put the body of the earbuds together back-to-back. The cord can then be neatly wrapped around the earbuds, with the included cord clasp holding the end in place.

Product reviews from the Crutchfield Labs

BOOM takes the concept of the ubiquitous white earbuds and gives them a much-needed makeover. And it's not just the color that's changed. The contoured surfaces that let the earbuds "spoon" with each other is more than just clever — it makes the earbuds a managable little package when not in use.

The rubberlike coating of the earbuds makes them water-resistant, but I liked it for another reason. The coating wasn't rough, but there was enough surface irregularity to hold the earbuds in place, even when I was moving around.

Sound quality overall was very good — another improvement over the standard white earbuds. Bass was nice and tight and the highs were clean and crisp. For on the go listening, the Spooners did great.

The Spooners have soft silicone sleeves that fit over the earbuds. These sleeves provide extra stability when you're working out or doing other extreme physical activities. My only complaint is that there there was no guide in the box showing how the sleeves needed to be oriented. So I had to experiment a little (if you're wondering, the wide part of the opening should be vertical, and the loop pointing towards the back of your head).
