Our take on the Powerbeats by Dr. Dre®

by David Brown
Beats

Bumpin' sound for your tough workouts

If you rely on music to drive you through a hard workout at the gym or outdoors, then you need the Powerbeats — lightweight sports 'phones from Beats. Co-developed by Dr. Dre and LeBron James, these earbuds use adjustable ear "hooks" that wrap around your ears to keep the buds securely in place, no matter how much you move. Advanced driver technology means that you hear smooth vocals and crisp highs. And a separate woofer pumps out deep bass — perfect when you need that beat to keep yourself on pace.

If you work out with your smartphone, you can use the universal remote built into the cord to control music playback without having to dig into your pocket for the player. You can even answer calls on your Apple® or Android™ phone hands-free, thanks to an in-line microphone.

Features

Overview: Powerbeats by Dr. Dre are high performance, in-ear sport headphones that are designed to stay in place. The ear buds stay securely in your ears while you work out, and the soft, moisture-resistant materials remain comfortable. The unique in-line remote and microphone let you control your music and your phone calls without having to interrupt your workout. The Powerbeats come with 3 sizes of ear buds, an extension cable, and a hard shell zippered case for storage.

Design: The earbuds are angled to fit the natural curvature of your ear canal, while the rubber sport hook holds them securely in place. Each ear bud has two drivers to provide clear highs and mids, while the silicone ear tips provide a good seal to maintain a good bass response. Powerbeats have an open design to let in ambient noise so you're always aware of your surroundings.

Cable: The attached cable is the ideal length to reach your phone or music player as you wear it, but not too long that it becomes an annoyance. An extension cable is included in case you need the extra length. The cable terminates into a super-slim 3.5mm plug that will work with most smartphone cases.

In-line Remote/Microphone: The in-line remote and microphone are fully compatible with most Apple devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad). The 3-button remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation or later), iPod classic (120GB and 160GB), iPod touch (2nd generation or later), iPhone 3GS or later, and iPad. The remote is compatible with iPod shuffle (3rd generation or later), and audio is supported by all iPod and iPad models. The remote is also partially compatible (play/pause, answer/end calls, and voice commands) with Android, Blackberry, and HTC devices.

Note: Full compatibility includes the following functions: Play/pause, Skip forward/backward, Scan forward/backward, Answer/End calls, Voice command, and Volume control.

Ear Tip Assortment: The Powerbeats in-ear headphones include an assortment of soft rubber ear tips. There are three sizes of ear tips (large, medium, and small). One pair (medium) comes installed on the earphones, while the others are stored in a vinyl folder with a snap closure.

great sounding, not reliable

Written By TimH, Venetia, PA on Wednesday, September 19, 2012

The sound of these earphones is outstanding. The build quality/reliability is unacceptable. My first pair lasted about 3-4 months before the volume control stopped working and the sound cut out completely on one side. I purchased an extended warranty with my second pair, and I'm in the process of returning them for the same reasons. These clearly are not designed/built well enough to be used during exercise.
Pros:
Great sound
Cons:
Poor durability

Not a good "in ear fit"

Written By Steve, North Potomac, MD on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these for us while in the gym, was looking for ear buds that would stay on and in my ears while moving around. These Monster Dre Beats stayed on the ear but not in the ear. I was constantly pushing them back in my ear. The sound quality was very good but guess the ear bud posts needed to be a bit longer. I exchanged them for the Polk 3000s.
Pros:
Sound quality
Cons:
Poor fit in the ear

Sounds Great, Quality Trash

Written By Ernest, Johns Creek, GA on Thursday, December 22, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am presently on my third pair of Powerbeats and fresh out of the box the Control Talk didn't work. The other two pair merely couldn't handle the working out the few times I did because of the Control Talk dying and killing the headphone it is attached to. I find it totally ridiculous that they couldn't hand at the most 15 work outs. I would definitely not recommend you purchase them. I REPEAT, I would not recommend you purchase them.
Pros:
Sound Great
Cons:
The Control Talk Feature, Build Quality

Great sound, HORRIBLE build quality

Written By mitgrad, Austin, TX on Thursday, August 04, 2011

These are, hands-down, the best-sounding earbud-type headphones I've ever owned. The bass is amazing, and you really don't have to crank them too loud to hear your music.

Even better, unlike most earbuds, these headphones never slip out of my ears...even when I'm dripping in sweat.

Speaking of sweat...the remote control appears to be very intolerant of it. I think I got maybe a half drop of sweat in between the switches of the remote, and it's been broken ever since. This happened within the first two weeks of ownership. Now, instead of just playing music, my iPhone will randomly fast forward, switch to another song, or pop up the "Voice commands" prompt. I now have a $150 pair of useless headphones on my hands.

Not worth the money!

Written By DanaNJ, Jersey City, NJ on Thursday, June 02, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They sound pretty good but after only a month it looked as if the cord would fray soon....and after only 3 months the earpiece has completely broken. Made like junk for something so expensive. Don't believe the hype.

Disappointing

Written By Barry K, New York, NY on Monday, March 28, 2011

I have to say for the cost of these, I find the sound quality quite disappointing. I have a set of Bose earbuds, but I wanted a pair that fit snugly in my ear and woudn't pop out so easily when I run. So I thought I would give the Dr Dres a try. But the Bose sound quality is dramatically better, especially the bass, for 1/3 lower cost. They do stay in my ears a better than the Bose, but not worth the give up in sound quality. Frankly, they really don't sound much better than the cheap earbuds that came with my iPhone

Great Sound....That's it!

Written By Mark B., New Jersey on Sunday, March 20, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones sound pretty good. A little too much base. The Control talk buttons broke on day 2 and I only used them for 5 minutes on day 1. I have search other websites for reviews and a lot of other people have the same problem. Crutchfield was great with the return. Let's see how pair #2 goes but I don't have too much faith. Buyer Beware.

Powerbeats by Dr. Dre®

Written By Donnie, Virginia Beach, VA on Monday, January 24, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these headphones for about 3 months. These are one of the best
headphones I have ever bought. I workout at least 3 times a weeks, and have never had
these headphones fall off or malfunction. The sound is amazing and they dont lose a
touch when jogging or running and do not need to be adjusted. I would recommend
these for anyone who worksout a lot.
