MartinLogan Dynamo 500 powered subwoofer

The Dynamo 500 offers rear-panel volume control, phase switch, and crossover control with a bypass switch.

It's not just about more bass

As a preeminent speaker manufacturer, MartinLogan knows great bass is about more than just quantity. So they designed the Dynamo 500 to deliver excellent bass accuracy as well. Both the driver structure and the built-in amp are configured to minimize distortion and noise, so this sub's bass output is not only ample, but clean and tight as well. Two rear ports efficiently enhance the low-frequency output without introducing port-induced distortion. This ensures the Dynamo 500 is a great match for both movies and music, not to mention MartinLogan's impressive lineup of speakers.

Features

Dynamo Series Powered Subwoofer: Perfect for either home theater or stereo applications, the MartinLogan Dynamo 500 powered subwoofer is solidly built with high-density materials to minimize cabinet resonance and provide a foundation for the high-output 10" woofer and high-current 120-watt RMS (360-watt peak) amplifier. Additionally, dual rear-mounted low-turbulence ports maximize bass output while minimizing port induced distortion.

120-Watt RMS (360-Watt Peak) Amplifier: The MartinLogan Dynamo 500's amplifier belongs to a recently-developed class of switch-mode designs that incorporate a variety of innovative techniques to reduce noise, distortion, and heat to the lowest possible levels. In particular, the switching frequency is much higher than in typical subwoofer amplifiers of this type, providing a tremendous true 120-watts continuously (360-watts peak) with extremely low distortion.

Low-Distortion 10" Woofer: The Dynamo 500's high-resolution front-firing driver combines a 10" polypropylene cone with a high-intensity magnet structure to achieve huge excursion and output capability without sacrificing detail. By eliminating cone flexure, even at long voice-coil excursions, the Dynamo 500's advanced-technology bass driver achieves the very low distortion necessary for proper blending with MartinLogan's Folded Motion and electrostatic speakers.

High-Density Cabinet Construction: The powered subwoofer's cabinet is constructed from the finest composite material for acoustical integrity and is finished with an attractive wood-grain vinyl coating.

Dual Low-Turbulence Ports: Ports are a convenient and cost-effective way of increasing low-frequency output. The Dynamo 500's dual low-turbulence ports are carefully designed to provide superb low-end efficiency while minimizing port induced distortion.

Seamless System Integration: Comprehensive connection options, low-pass filtering, and phase control make integrating the Dynamo 500 subwoofer into a multichannel home theater or stereo music setup simple and seamless. The main left/right line-level inputs feed into a precision low-pass filter with a cut-off frequency variable from 50 to 200 Hz. For systems in which the AV receiver supplies the low-pass crossover, the Dynamo 500 offers an LFE input that bypasses its internal filters. The phase control can be set to 0- or 180-degrees.

Auto Power On/Off: The powered subwoofer will automatically enter a power saving mode when no audio signal is detected. The subwoofer will automatically come out of power saving mode when an audio signal is detected.

Break-In Period: The Dynamo 500 woofer requires approximately 50 hours of break-in at moderate listening levels before its optimal performance occurs. This will factor in on any critical listening and judgment.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Q
I just got mine bundled with MartinLogan Motion 40s. On at least 4 occasions, I've heard a loud pop emit from the subwoofer, (or least I think it's the subwoofer!) The first time I heard it, at about 1am, I thought someone had thrown something at my house! It happened again tonight, and my wife was the one to notice it came from the speaker. A glance through the reviews at Amazon noted a short-life, and one or two also noted the loud pops. I can't tie the pops to anything else happening. I am going to invest in a much better cable connecting to it, but should I worry about it?
