Folded Motion XT tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion XT tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works similarly to an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. Because it requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, response time is drastically reduced along with distortion. The diaphragm's increased surface area also provides wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and highly accurate soundstage. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness. And the XT tweeter boasts a 40% larger radiating surface area than that of ML's standard Folded Motion design, for even greater bandwidth and efficiency.

Expressive midrange and deep, effortless bass

The Motion 60XT uses a low-distortion 6-1/2" aluminum cone to supply fast, clean, and open-sounding midrange, so vocals sound almost as if the singer were in the room. Dual 8" woofers with rigid cast aluminum baskets ensure the Motion 60XT goes deep and clean. These drivers increase low-frequency output, making sure bass response isn't an afterthought or left for a subwoofer to worry about. Two rear-firing bass ports help efficiently enhance bass response without adding distortion to this speaker's pristine performance.

All that and looks too

MartinLogan knows how to catch ears and eyes. The Motion 60XT comes in your choice of flawless Gloss Black or Black Cherrywood finishes. The cabinet features a gently angled top and soft-radius corners, making it stand out from the typical box-shaped tower speaker. Removable floor spikes and stabilizer bars offer firm footing while enhancing this speaker's natural sound.

Features

3-Way Tower Loudspeaker: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT tower loudspeaker employs a 3-way speaker design and features MartinLogan's advanced resolution Folded Motion XT Tweeter, a 6.5" aluminum cone midrange driver, and two 8" aluminum cone bass woofers. Combining these trio of woofers together with the Folded Motion Tweeter creates a dynamic full-range sound with an expansive soundstage.

  • Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion XT tweeter helps give the Motion 60XT floorstanding loudspeaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1.25" x 2.4" Folded Motion XT tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x30°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
  • 6.5" Midrange Driver: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT loudspeaker features a 6.5" aluminum cone midrange driver housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber. The aluminum cone driver uses a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. This 6.5" midrange driver promotes an even more open, revealing, and authentic sound in the critical midrange.
  • Two Aluminum 8" Woofers w/ Rear-Firing Bass Port: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT also features dual 8" aluminum cone bass woofers housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber with dual rear-firing ports. The aluminum cone woofers use a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. The two 8" woofers paired with the rear-firing bass port create increased cone area delivering higher output and audibly richer, deeper bass performance.

Precision Crossovers: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the high frequency tweeter, the midrange driver, and two bass woofers, the Motion 60XT loudspeaker features a precision crossovers (400/2200Hz) utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.

High-Gloss MDF Cabinet: Complementing the Motion 60XT loudspeaker's sonic accuracy is its solidly constructed 3/4" thick MDF cabinet. The cabinet is finished in either high-gloss piano black or black cherrywood, and includes MartinLogan's signature perforated grille. The Motion 60XT speaker's elegant and timeless look will blend into almost any decor. The speaker cabinet also features rounded edges and a gently tapered top.

Bi-Wiring/Bi-Amping: Using the dual posts, you can bi-wire or bi-amp the speaker. Bi-wiring or bi-amping the speaker provides improved bass & treble performance. If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: MartinLogan's proprietary tool-less binding posts simplify cable connection and management. The binding posts will accept bare wire (16- to 10-gauge), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Mounting Feet: The MartinLogan Motion 60XT tower loudspeaker includes four pre-installed rubber feet for tile and hardwood floors. You can replace the pre-installed rubber feet with two horizontal feet and four vertical spikes for carpeted flooring.

Placement: Although the speakers are designed to deliver a superb sonic performance when placed close to a wall, you may notice improved imaging and detail if you are able to place the speakers (measured from the tweeter and woofers) 2' to 3' from the front wall and 2' or more from the side walls. To achieve optimum stereo imaging it is recommend that you aim the speakers toward your primary listening position.

Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

Customer Q&A

Q
Will my Onkyo tx-nr757 power these speakers? The Martin Logan website lists they work with 4,6 or 8 ohm power amps. My Onkyo can go down to 6 ohms, but I don't want the speakers to sound thin because the amp isn't capable of handling their load.

A
The Onkyo TX-NR757 is rated as being able to produce 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at .08% THD, with 2 channels driven. However, with either 6 or 4 Ohm speakers attached, the power output from the AVR will be even higher. With that said, this AVR is more than adequate to drive these ML Motion 60XT towers. These speakers are very sensitive , thus they do not require a lot of wattage to drive them to perform optimally. Enjoy.

In my opinion the onkyo will not have the power needed properly power these speakers. I had a denon 7200 hooked up and they did not sound well, pretty much no sound stage. I put a McIntosh 402 with the speakers and they started to sound better. I then powered them with a class a tube amp and wow, they really came alive. When these speakers are powered right they sound pretty good.

Hello, I am pretty sure your Onkyo will work fine but I have never tested with one so I will let you know my experience with low power amplfiers. I have powered these with my 15W class A transistor amplifier with no issue. Also tested on a 10w single ended class A tube amplifier. The sound is "loud" enough for music audition. These speakers have a limited range on the sub bass as indicated by the specification so don't expect to be rumbling with any sub sonic especially with a low power amplifier. The compliment external subwoofer from Martin will complete the fidelity.

I'm not a bass head so I'm wondering if the 2-8" woofers would be too much for a room about 15'X18. I have an old Paradigm PS-1000,if necessary. I plan to drive the XT-60's with a McIntosh 5300 Integrated Amp. Any feedback is much appreciated?

They have alot of bass but it is tight and clean not shake the floor boomy bass. The voice seems to be the star of these speakers. They really sound amazing. I have 5.1.4 Dolby setup when playing encoded material they seem to have more bass. But overall the speakers are top notch. Be prepared if you order them I've never seen so many boxes and packaging material. I am quite impressed with the Martin Logans. Would totally recommend. You should be able with your setup to trim most of the bass out as well. Hope this helps.

I'm a bass head using these in a multi channel setup. These speakers are well balanced. I don't think they would be too much in your room. If you feel like they are the bass can be tamed with some equalization. They are a great speaker for music and multi channel use. I highly recommend them.
justin  Aug 18, 2019
A
My understanding is that bass is greatly affected by your room and placement of your speakers in the room. If you follow placement guidelines, you will likely not have unnatural bass. I find my speakers produce a natural sound without heavy bass.

They sound great. They are fabulous speakers and very high quality. They are not too deep if that is what you are concerned about. My room is just a little bigger. I am using 2 60XTs for my front L/R channels in a home theater set up so I prefer to have a subwoofer too. You don't need the subwoofer, but it takes music and movies to another level of experience.

The Speaker's would fit perfectly,!!my room a little smaller but I don't listen to loud music,ur amp will do it justice

I also am not a bass head. Your room is similar in size to my listening room. I'm using an Anthem AVM 60 processor with Anthem Room Correction software, along with a 120 X 5 amplifier. I am using an SVS SB-2000 subwoofer for all music and video surround sound. These speakers provide a strong, yet clean and balanced bass - no boominess. The mids and highs shine. I've had them over a month, and now I'm considering getting Motion 40's for my secondary listening space.

Bill, depending on the placements, they should be fine. I have an additional 10 inch sub as well as two back shelf speakers also. You just have adjust the level of the base to suit you. I have different adjustments for when I watch TV versus listening to music, but the speakers do either very well. Allan
allan  Aug 18, 2019

No way, they'll sound great, especially when driven by a quality amp. Just note the break in time, mine just get better with age. I do like the additional low end from a dedicated sub but it sounds like you'll be good without one.

Q
I prefer the sound of acoustically suspended speakers. Does the ML 60XT have the characteristic "loose" bass (or indistinct) that so many ported speakers exhibit?

Everything is fine with these impressive speakers bass IF you maintain the recommended distance from the back wall. Otherwise, they can sound muddy. My set is in another location, with the manual. But I believe it is 2', which is substantial and can crowd certain rooms. Terrific, high-efficiency speakers. Totally worth it as long as they are not cramped.

Q
Will the NAD C 275BEE power these speakers properly?

A
I'm not very familiar with your amplifier, but based on the specs it has more power than my Denon receiver and these speakers sound great with the power I have. These speakers have a pretty high sensitivity and can run well off of a small amount of power. You'll love them!
justin  Mar 04, 2018
A
Plenty of power for these speakers. The NAD offers 150 W per channel into 8 ohms while the ML 60 XT are 4 ohm speakers which increases the power.
c anthony  Mar 04, 2018
A
Yes it will power them great! The NAD is rated at 150 Watts per channel @ 8 ohms. Therefore you will get 300 Watts a side into 4 ohms. The speakers are rated up to 400 Watts a side. I'm powering mine with a classe ca-200.
jason  Mar 04, 2018
A
Either the customer or Crutchfield need to provide specs on the amp, unless the only acceptable answer is from someone who actually has this very setup. 2 great companies and I have used NAD in 4 different stereo only systems. My first experience with MartinLogan: astounding speakers that work well for stereo only or as mains in a home theater. They're surprisingly efficient, but have to be off of the wall in order to not sound muddy. 2' works perfectly, but not everyone has that much room (I didn't, so I was lucky to be able to swap rooms, where they just opened up). Drive them easily with 150 watt 2 channel amp.
