MartinLogan Motion LX16

The Motion LX16 uses a 5-1/4" aluminum cone mid/woofer and MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion tweeter for smooth and detailed full-range sound.

A compact speaker with a big voice

MartinLogan's Motion LX16 bookshelf speaker will reward you with stunningly natural, transparent sound whether you use a single pair to create a high-quality stereo music system, or build a multi-channel home theater around them with a matching subwoofer.  And it's a treat for the eyes. The LX16's beautiful furniture-grade, high-gloss black finish and sleek, magnetically attached perforated steel grille lend a stylish look to any room you put it in. This member of  MartinLogan's award-winning Motion® series features advanced speaker technologies like the Folded Motion™ tweeter. Though small in size, the Motion LX16 delivers huge musical enjoyment.

Folded Motion tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.

Bass that keeps pace

The Motion LX16 uses a 5-1/4" aluminum cone woofer to supply fast, clean midrange and lower-mid frequencies that blend in seamlessly with the Folded Motion tweeter. A low-turbulence rear-firing port extends bass performance, but keeps it tight and tuneful.

Product Highlights:

  • 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion™ tweeter for exceptional musical detail with low distortion
  • 5-1/4" black aluminum-cone woofer with cast basket
  • bass-reflex (ported) enclosure
  • black-anodized brushed aluminum front baffle
  • frequency response: 60-25,000 Hz (±3dB)

  • recommended amplifier power: 20-200 watts
  • custom binding post speaker terminals
  • perforated steel grille attaches magnetically to cabinet
  • high-gloss Piano Black finish
  • 6-9/16"W x 11-1/8"H x 9-11/16"D
  • weight: 12 lbs.
  • warranty: 5 years (with product registration)
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these as a small set of rear speakers. My room is double high and 22x19 these speakers are amazing ! Worth every penny. Nice tight yet deep base crisp clear highs extremely hard to believe the sound out of such a small box. I can't wait for their big brother the XL35's Its been a long time since I've bought new audio equipment I'm not one for specs and cross over's or correct balancing I just know what my ears can hear and I highly recommend these to anyone especially if you need something small. My room as big as it is called for something small nice looking as great sounding Mission accomplished

Pros: Great look, big sound, small form

Cons: Now I've got to upgrade everything else. Fronts sides amp etc

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

---I was first introduced to the Martin Logan "Motion 15" at a listening room where I made the salesman play some Bob Marley through them past a point where he thought the speakers were going to blow(as I call it, the Lou Reed test). When they didn't blow, and still sounded warm and crisp even while being pushed to near their limits, I knew they were the speakers for me. After going home and doing more research, I found out the LX16's are the same thing, different look, and less expensive so I went ahead and ordered them up (Zac, the sales rep I ordered from is awesome). ---It's been about 10 days since I received them and I've been putting them through some pretty extensive play. I gotta say, from A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory", to The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" (a great sonic test) to the Bouncing Soul's "Hopeless Romantic", and everything in between, these things sound great. So well balanced and warm. I was weary of the bass response from other reviews I've read, but I've had no issues with that. These little buggers boom. I listen to music of ALL genres, and multiple formats (CD, radio, vinyl, cassette, and 8-track) and so far everything sounds brilliant. I can't attest as to how they sound when used in a home theater, because I don't watch much TV/movies, but I'm sure they'd sound just as awesome. As picky as I am, I have ZERO complaints, and would HIGHLY recommend these speakers. (Hooked up to a Marantz 2238B in a 17'x20' room)

Pros: Well balanced, very warm, natural sounding speakers

Cons: None to date

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Five Stars!!!

These are perhaps the best small speakers I have ever used. I'm definately not an audiophile, but I wanted a decent system and these speakers represent a huge percentage of the total system cost. That said, I am so glad that I selected these speakers because they round out the system nicely. Initially I was looking at the L.M. Motion 15 speakers, but after a little research discovered that the differences between the 15s and the LX16s are mostly cosmetic. That would make these best small speaker deal out there - saving me about $320.

The highs are clean and responsive, the mid range is very good, and the lows.... no problem. I've read that these guys are a little weak on the low end, but I have not found that to be the case. I am using these in a small office and they are closer to the wall, so that probably helps ( since the ports are in the rear).

I would also like to thank Crutchfield for bringing these to my attention....

Pros: Quality build, responsive and clean highs

Cons: None - absolutely none.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As far as I can tell the Motion LX16's have the same engine under the hood as their successor, the Motion 15's. The difference between the two models seems to be purely cosmetic. (And, the LX16's are selling at almost half the price!) I'm only 1/4 of the way through the "break in" period, and these speakers sound amazing. They really capture high-end frequencies beautifully, especially the higher ranges of the human voice. My Audyssey set up tells me that my LX16's are crossing over to my sub at 50Hz, which was a lot lower than I was expecting (thumbs up to that).

Pros: Visually striking design; these speakers really catch your eye. Handles highs, midranges, and low-mids clearly and effortlessly.

Cons: None.

love these speakers

love these speakers! not yet broken in, but love them straight out of the box. have been looking at motion 15, so glad i got these instead, sound the same, prefer the look. amazing to get such a clear, warm, well-filled in sound from boxes this size. no regrets...

Fantastic Bookshelf speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Owned quite a few high end speakers, mostly floor standing. Original DCM Time windows, Infinity's and Large Axioms to name a few. I needed to down size and these Martin Logan LX16's were the right size so I ordered them based on the reviews. I received them from Crutchfield, set them up and burned them in for the suggested 70 hours. The results were incredible. The sound stage is great, you can pickout each instrument, nothing gets lost. I know they are small but the bass is there - it thumps instead of booms. No need for a sub IMHO. These are the best deal going right now.

Pros: Sound - Clear no colorations Fit and finish is top shelf

Cons: I would like to see different binding posts (just me)

Amazing sound for size!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've listened to ribbon speakers before, owned an Apogee Centaur Minor, really loved it. I am truly amazed how much clean useable bass it produces and such natural midrange and highs. I love how the music doesn't sounds like it is coming out of a box, but simply disappears. It still needs to break in, but sounds wonderful already to me. I'm just using a Harman Kardon receiver and toshiba DVD player to play movies and music. Speakers needs to be toed in a little and when you sit in the sweet spot, imaging is stable and vocals snaps into focus.

Crutchfield was super fast to process order, package well, no damage to speakers, would definitely buy from them again, thanks!

Pros: Cheap, but looks expensive, sounds incredible!

Cons: None, very happy customer

Ideal surround speakers

Written By amarkow, California on Sunday, February 22, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the M-L LX16s as surround speakers in my home theater. They are a huge improvement over my previous speakers, and they look great as well. Whether they are supplying subtle ambience or precise information, these little wonders perform magnificently, and they were a bargain at the special price that Crutchfield offered.

Pros: Exceptional sound from a compact package. They look beautiful on the back wall of my theater room. Nicely matched to my front M-L XT 35s. Great price from Crutchfield.

Cons: A little difficult to find workable stands to securely hold these speakers -- but now that I've mounted the stands and the speakers, I have no complaints whatsoever. G

Perfect for my space

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just moved into a ranch home with a very open floor plan. I wanted a compact system that would sound great, and that I would be able to enjoy from anywhere in the house. Especially since I'm sparse in my taste in furniture, these bookshelf speakers plus a sub is a perfect solution. Amazing sound in my living room, and good sound filtering through the rest of the house. The sub makes all the difference, but these speakers deliver really crisp sound.

O What a Beautiful Tweeter - LX 16

Written By Muziknutt, Nashville on Sunday, February 08, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

That tweeter! That folded ribbon tweeter! Holy moley! Saved my marriage to an excellent interior designer. I wanted a pair of those 6 ft. panels. Every time they were mentioned her brown hair turned a bright red that matched perfectly the flames that flew from her perfectly matched eyes and ears. She's happy cause the "lovely" black high gloss piano finished cabinets fit fashionably on the shelves alongside the finely framed Feng Shui photographs. I'm happy with the genius hybrid speaker system that performs much like the Space Odyssey Monoliths with their keen sense of spaciousness, clarity and realism.

Leann Rimes performance of "Blue" with the "Time Jumpers" is very close to perfect. Boz Scaggs saxophone coated vocal tones come across in excellent fashion for male vocals.

The LX 16's shine on with The "Steve's" Winwood and Wonder electronic keyboards. Bobby Caldwell's update/remake of his huge hit "What You Won't Do for Love" is a must hear for the same reason. (note: finger snaps on this tune are in mid-air out front left and right - Sah weet)

That smacking bass on Bella Flecks "Prickly Pear" needs no sub - The NAD 3020 and the 5 1/4" woof make it all happen.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, The Black Keys and Kings of Leon seem quite comfortable next to Joe Morello, Stan Getz and Nat King Cole as we sit and listen to a "Box of Rain".

Pros: Realism Exquisite vocal reproduction Separation Value

Cons: heavy cymbal crashes mushy sometimes (still breaking in)

what great speaker for a fantastic price

Written By JamesG, California on Sunday, January 25, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the chance to listen to the Martin Logan motion 15 at my local BB. They sounded fantastic. I've already had the Klipsch Icon KB-15 those speakers also sounded good but Martin Logan is on entirely different level in quality and sound. It's truly audiophile speaker once you have it in your system. I did a'lot of research and to discover the LX16 to be exactly like the motion 15 only difference is the cosmetic changes regarding the 2 models. Crutchfield customer service so far been fantastic! One of the LX16 had a scratch on the edge of the woofer rim and they sent another one right away while I was able to listen to my music till the replacement speaker arrived new in box of course. You get to try these speakers for 60 days is just unheard of. My final thought is if I return these LX16 would be only to pay the difference for the 35XT. Crutchfield has taken care of me.

Pros: great airy details. Bass is sharp and detailed the best of heard of a 5.25 woofer. Excellent construction and a gorgeous looking speaker.

Cons: None. Nothing I can even say bad about the LX16.

ML LX16 = awesome

Written By alan, Memphis TN on Monday, January 05, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't come across a set of speakers that look this fantastic anywhere near this price range. The sound is also very pleasing - They are efficient and pull every ounce of wattage from my NAD d3020 amp due to their low ohm rating. You will not need much power at all to get these to sound loud and clear! The tweeter is really what makes these so special. Break-in time is key, let them play for 70+ hours before any critical reviews

Pros: * Efficient * looks / design * price

Cons: none

Good but you could find better

Written By Alex, California on Thursday, January 01, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, don't get me wrong. This is a very good speaker.

Get this speaker if: - It is the most you've ever spent on a speaker, and you are looking for better - You have limited space, or are picky about looks, and still want good sound - You have a good amplifier, good source, good cables, and good music files/recordings

Do NOT get this speaker if: - You already have similar priced speakers and are looking for better - You are using a vacuum tube power amplifier (they are 5 ohms, which isn't 4/8/16 ohms, so none of the taps will sound amazing) - You have the space for larger speakers

That's my advise. I like them, but my 5 year-old KRK ST-6 speakers sound more clear (these are clear, but those are even more clear) and actually costed less. My homemade speakers with F120A speakers is better with my tube amp. These speakers are definitely HiFi, but you can do better. I'll probably wind up using them for TV. An yeah yeah yeah the bass isn't there, but you already know that when you look at the dimensions. I didn't expect bass, just very clear vocals. I got clear vocals, but not the best I've heard.

Edit 4/4/15:
Changed to 5-stars
I was initially disappointed with these speakers, and they opened up so much after breaking in, and sounded so much better, that I had to email crutchfield to edit the review.
Not being compatible with tube amps is incorrect-- they sound fantastic, and actually sound better with my best tube amp than with my best solid state amp (which gave me heart burn, because the solid state was more expensive and now I don't use it).
Being 6 ohms, I tried both the 4 ohm and 8 ohm taps on the tube-amp's output transformer, and surprsingly, dispite impedance matching, both were very clear. I got slightly better bass out of the 4 ohm tap so I stuck with it but I suggest trying both. The solid state amp sounded great, too, but the tube amp was impossible to beat.

My listening distance is about 3 feet. Speaker separation is about 3 feet. Toe-in angle on the speakers (maybe 20 degrees) sounds very similar to straight out (0 degree angle) which is nice-- they have a big sweet spot.

After breaking in, I tried them with the KRK ST6 speakers and the FX120As I mentioned, and it definitely sounded better.

So, be patient. They might sound muffled at first, but they change personalities SO MUCH when they open up, it is stupid. I love these speakers.

I've found them best sounding when mounted on soft and large sorbothane feet (ditch the ones that came with it) and then pressed down onto them with pressure with a steel bracket. The feet alone made the midrange open up, and then pressing down on them with the bracket made the bass tighter as well as slightly improving midrange.

Perfect for What They Are

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As others have stated this is the exact same speaker as the current Motion 15 except for minor cosmetic differences.

I have these hooked up with a Denon avr 1712 in very open living room. The Denon drives them fine but they really open up at the upper limits of this receiver. I'm going to be adding an external amplifier in the future and I reccomend the same if you want to really get the full benefit of these speakers.

I also have them mated with a SVS SB-2000 sub crossed over at 80hz. They really benefit from pairing with a subwoofer.

These speakers are revealing. I use Tidal and Spotify for music and you can really tell the difference between a quality source and compressed music on the LX16's.

What else? Well, not much that other reviewers haven't covered. I orded a third one today to use as a center channel if that tells you anything.

Pros: Very revealing and "clean" sounding

Cons: Not bassoholic certified but no bookshelf is...

Great Complementary Piece

Written By NickB, Arizona on Thursday, December 18, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers without ever hearing them, but based my purchase on reviews that compared favorably to the new Motion 15s. I can safely say that I am pleased with my purchase. Same sound quality and similar looks to the 15s, but a little less expensive. Sleek black finish compliments the rest of my surround system. Mine are currently set up as my rears, but could easily serve as a nice solo piece in a smaller setup. Worth the purchase if you like the Martin Logan sound.

Pros: Sleek Look, crisp sound, solid construction

Cons: Nothing, so far

Beautiful but restrained

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the LX 16's having never listened to them, relying on reviews (like this one) and Crutchfields great pricing and customer advisors. For the most part , I am happy with the purchase, though there is a certain "restrained" quality to the LX 16's. That said, in conjunction with some old Cambridge Soundworks M60 bookshelf speakers, my system does sound very nice.

Pros: Wonderful build quality, strong midrange performance

Cons: Somewhat restrained sound

Great set of rear speakers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speaker were great for completing my Martin Logan surround system. The LX16s sound great, and provide a sleek modern look. I love terrible so these sound perfect with the benefit of the motion tweeters. Music and movies are crystal clear. The one thing I can say is that these speakers do need the recommended power for the best sound and benefit. If you are build a music or movie room these speakers will be a very good addition. I would recommend these speakers!

Pros: Clear sound, great looks!

Cons: Needs quite a bit of power for best performance.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After doing tons and tons of research on different bookshelf speakers, i purchased a pair of these LX16's, and so far could not be happier. I was looking at many used higher end speakers, trying to get the most bang for buck. I've heard the Martin Logan Motion 15's before and was impressed, so when i saw this incredible deal on Crutchfield for these LX16's i was quite intrigued. After reading some forum posts and professional reviews, it was confirmed that these were the same speaker as the Motion 15's just with a slightly different cabinet and the reviews were very positive to say the least, my mind was made up on buying these. I set them up for their break in period, Martin Logan recommends 70 hours or so at 90db before critical listening and so far i'm about 40 hours in. Still, right out of the box they sounded amazing. Overall very full sound, nice midrange, crisp highs, just enough on the low end, but for me these will eventually be used with a sub so that's not as important. Also, i'd like to mention the overall appearance, these are downright beautiful and extremely well crafted. I love the brushed aluminum front baffle.

Pros: Absolutely beautiful speakers, very well made, and most importantly, amazing sound

Cons: none so far

Product Research

Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker: The MartinLogan Motion LX16 bookshelf loudspeaker employs a two-way speaker design and features MartinLogan's advanced resolution Folded Motion tweeter and a single 5.25" black-aluminum cone midbass woofer. Pairing these two drivers together creates a dynamic full-range sound with an expansive soundstage.

  • Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter helps give the Motion LX16 bookshelf loudspeaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x80°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
  • Aluminum Cone Woofer w/ Bass Port: The MartinLogan Motion LX16 bookshelf loudspeaker features a high-excursion 5.25" black-aluminum cone woofer with a cast basket housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber with a rear-firing bass port. The aluminum cone woofer uses a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. Pairing the 5.25" woofer with a rear-firing bass port provides higher output and audibly richer, deeper bass performance.

Precision Crossover: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the high frequency driver (tweeter) and the midbass driver (woofer), the Motion LX16 loudspeaker features a precision 2,700Hz crossover utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.

High-Gloss MDF Cabinet: Complementing the Motion LX16 loudspeaker's sonic accuracy is its solidly constructed 3/4" thick MDF cabinet. The cabinet is finished in either high-gloss piano black or black cherrywood, and includes MartinLogan's signature perforated grille. The Motion LX16 speaker's elegant and timeless look will blend into almost any decor. The speaker cabinet also features rounded edges and a gently tapered top.

Binding Posts: MartinLogan's proprietary tool-less binding posts simplify cable connection and management. The binding posts will accept bare wire (16- to 10-gauge), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

Mounting Options: The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet to help secure them in place on a flat-surface, prevent slippage, and reduce vibration. The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers.
