MartinLogan Motion 15

The Motion 15 uses a 5-1/4" aluminum cone mid/woofer and MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion tweeter.

A mini-monitor for music lovers

The operative word for MartinLogan's Motion 15 is "beauty." This mini-monitor has it in spades, from its furniture-grade fit and finish to its stunningly natural sound. This member of  MartinLogan's award-winning Motion® series features advanced speaker technologies like the Folded Motion™ tweeter. Though small in size, the Motion 15 delivers huge musical enjoyment.

Folded Motion tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan's innovative Folded Motion tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.

Bass that keeps pace

The Motion 15 uses a 5-1/4" aluminum cone woofer to supply fast, clean midrange and lower-mid frequencies that blend in seamlessly with the Folded Motion tweeter. A low-turbulence rear-firing port extends bass performance, but keeps it tight and tuneful.

Deceptively good sound

When MartinLogan visited Crutchfield for a day of training, they had a mix of their electrostatic and dynamic models lined up in the front of the room. They started off our session with a few minutes of an atmospheric live track. The sound was strikingly open and immediate — we thought we were listening to one of ML's electrostatic panels. Imagine our surprise when it turned out to be the little Motion 15s. Sometimes it's fun to be fooled.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Features

2-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker: The MartinLogan Motion 15 bookshelf loudspeaker employs a 2-way speaker design and features MartinLogan's advanced resolution Folded Motion tweeter and a single 5.5" aluminum cone midbass woofer. Pairing these two drivers together creates a dynamic full-range sound with an expansive soundstage.

  • Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter helps give the Motion 15 bookshelf loudspeaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion (80°x80°) to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
  • Aluminum Cone Woofer w/ Bass Port: The MartinLogan Motion 15 bookshelf loudspeaker features a high-excursion 5.5" aluminum cone woofer with a cast basket housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber with a rear-firing bass port. The aluminum cone woofer uses a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. Pairing the 5.5" woofer with a rear-firing bass port provides higher output and audibly richer, deeper bass performance.

Precision Crossover: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the high frequency driver (tweeter) and the midbass driver (woofer), the Motion 15 loudspeaker features a precision 2,700Hz crossover utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.

High-Gloss Cabinet: Complementing the Motion 15 loudspeaker's sonic accuracy is its elegant, yet understated styling. A high-gloss, piano black, white or black cherrywood finish, along with MartinLogan's signature perforated grille, give the Motion 15 speaker an elegant and timeless look that will blend into almost any decor. The speaker cabinet also features rounded edges and a gently tapered top.

Binding Posts: MartinLogan's proprietary tool-less binding posts simplify cable connection and management. The binding posts will accept bare wire (16- to 10-gauge), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.

Mounting Options: The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet to help secure them in place on a flat-surface, prevent slippage, and reduce vibration.  The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ear-opening! In the interest of full disclosure, I'm powering these through a Sonos Connnect:Amp, with iTunes media. I leave the "Loudness" feature turned off to not let any digital trickery get in the way. The difference between my previous speakers--which I thought were rather good, and certainly get rave reviews--and the Motion 15s is astonishing. To be fair, the Motion 15s are more expensive more, but not much larger, and yet the bass is many times bigger. They do astonishing things with acoustic music and smaller-scale rock. I'm not fussy about sitting in the perfect listening position all the time, but still they fill the room and really begin to open up with the Connect:Amp approaching 50%. Depending on the recording, of course, the bass is incredible. There is plenty of thump without being ridiculous, and the mids are still intelligible. Only dirty, low-fi music like Iggy Pop gets garbled, but I think that's the intent of the recording. One minor quibble is that I'm still getting used to the clarity of the folded motion tweeter. It's perhaps a placebo effect because I know it's a very efficient design, but on some songs, the tweeter comes on a bit strong. For example, the tambourine or whatever it is on "I Know" by The Beta Band hits hard. Dialing down the treble in the simplistic Sonos controls takes the edge off. As an aside, I do wish the ML 35XT came in white, as I have a hunch they would sound even "fuller" at lower volumes. If they offer that color I'll upgrade.

Pros: Small, elegant, unique

Cons: Some recordings, but not all, feel very bright, possibly because to the tweeter design.

A new Martin Logan convert

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided that I needed something new to fill in the "empty spot" in my home theater and 2.1 stereo listening experience. Up until now, I have been a lifelong Bose believer. My very first set of "real" speakers was a set of 301s that I bought in 1994 with paper route earnings. Every speaker in my house up to this point has been Bose, right down to my headphones that I am listening to as I write this review. I am clearly a lifelong Bose supporter, so I'm not here to bash them. Now don't think for one minute that I haven't read the scathing critiques of Bose over the years (no highs, no lows...) . Of course I have. But I LOVE my 901s and their wide open, extremely spatial imaging. And after listening to music through the brand for over 25 years, it's what music SHOULD sound like, right? Enter the Martin Logan Motion 15s. Martin Logan was wonderful enough to grace my ears with these speakers, and I'm not sure that I will ever understand music the same way again. I now see why SOME people have always had a different take on how music should sound. While it most certainly varies from recording to recording based on the song in question, there is an unmistakable presence in the Martin Logans that my Bose never had. Not EVERY song, but most songs. It almost makes me shudder to think what I would feel about ML if I had splurged the extra $400 and gone with the 35XTs. And I'm not all that certain that in the next few weeks that I won't exercise my return option & get them.

Pros: Incredible sound in a very tight footprint with beauty and elegance to match.

Cons: Maybe I should have gone with the next model up. If these sound so awesome, maybe the 35XTs will blow my mind....?

A Mighty Speaker in a Small Package!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had never heard of the Martin Logan brand of speakers until they were recommended to me by Buzz at Crutchfield.com. I needed speakers with a small footprint for a white living bookshelf, but I also want a full, rich orchestral sound to compliment my Harman Kardon 3490 stereo receiver. The Martin Logan Motion 15 speakers were perfect. The sound is stunning - I am hearing clarity of orchestral instruments that is just amazing. The look is very elegant, and one can tell these speakers were designed and made with care. I also appreciate the ability to have a 5-year warranty built into a product as long as it is registered with the company. That is so rare these days unless one purchases a separate extended warranty. I like the confidence this shows in their products.

I highly recommend the Martin Logan Motion 15 speakers if you want high-quality sound with a smaller footprint. As usual, the service at Crutchfield.com is 5-star and I will most definitely be back when making my next purchase. I only wish I had heard of the Martin Logan brand earlier - great craftsmanship and an even better sound.

Pros: Excellent sound; relatively small footprint; gorgeous and elegant color and design; easily connected; the initial burn-in period for the speakers is no problem since they sound wonderful right out of the box and are only getting better as the days go on;

Cons: There are no "cons" to these speakers that I can see unless being a tad heavy is a "con". I look at the slight heaviness, however, as a plus since it appears the weight is due to the speakers being well-made, durable, and of very high-quality workmanship.
