Folded Motion™ tweeter for detailed sound

MartinLogan Motion 2 tweeter detail

The Motion 4 uses MartinLogan's acclaimed Folded Motion tweeter for smooth, effortless highs.

The distinctive sound of the Motion series starts with MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter. Rather than a dome or cone driver, this tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music sounds amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.

A stylish, curved cabinet with a unique folded port

Cutaway view of the folded bass port

The tweeter is coupled here with a 4" doped paper cone woofer that supplies accurate mids and lows. The Motion 4's eye-catching curved cabinet is finished in your choice of high-gloss white or piano black, and it hides a unique folded bass port that helps reinforce the low frequencies and improve sensitivity. This speaker's subtle, modern lines complement just about any décor. If you're mounting it high up on your wall, you can invert it to aim the high frequencies downward toward your listening position.

Be sure you get enough bass

For even better bass — and especially for high-impact home theater — we recommend a powered subwoofer, like one of MartinLogan's excellent models.

Upgrade from Infinity 1200 speakers, WOW! Quality speakers that all one needs to do is listen and remove all doubt. Very satisfied and excellent Crutchfield service.

Took some time but was worth it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took some time for me to get a good handle on these speakers. It definitely was not "Love at first sight", or more appropriately, first hearing. I could immediately tell a difference between these Martin Logan speakers and the ones they replaced, small Energy speakers; but, I couldn't decide if I liked the difference or not. The midrange was beautiful, clear and crisp without the harshness of the upper frequencies, but I was having some problems with the bass. It sounded sluggish and muddled below around 250 Hz. Fortunately, my Marantz receiver has a LF channel with variable cut offs and I use a powered sub-woofer so I was able to experiment with different cross-over points and volume levels on my sub-woofer. I wound up using the 120 Hz cut off on my Marantz and avery slight increase in my sub-woofer volume to achieve optimum balance. I now really enjoy the Martin Logans. The mids are clean and articulate, the bass is punchy without being bloated or lean, and the highs are nicely extended without being clashy or screatchy. One very notable improvement is dialogue from the TV. Now, I can understand what is being said, which was a problem with the Energys that I didn't even know I had until plugging the Martin Logans into my system. I'm finding that I'm using my AV system more for listening to music than previously because I'm enjoying it more. I would say that's a solid endorsement.

Pros: - wonderful midrange out of the box. - clear but relaxed upper range, well controlled. - very good balance.

Cons: - achieving balance requires some effort and equipment with the capability to apply appropriate cross-over points, and preferably a powered sub-woofer.

Great looks and performance

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a speaker that would blend in with our white built in book shelves without sacrificing on quality. These speakers are nearly invisible, but when you do see them their modern styling is impressive. I mostly use them for background music, occasionally playing them at louder volumes. They perform perfectly no matter the style of music or volume level I have them set to. Would highly recommend!

New Martin Logan fan

Written by: Mnmacht from Minneapolis, MN on February 7, 2015

I am blown away by abilities of the Motion 4's. I paired them with a Martin Logan sub and I just smile while listening to music.

Pros: Really good at what they were designed for, highs and mids. Being part of a system rather than being the system.

Cons: Lower bass ranges are not there if your looking for an all in one speaker. But trust me, that can be solved with a quality sub for not much money.

Great Buy!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crystal clear, the tweeters are awesome. They are a great addition. I'm use them as my surround high speakers. Perfectly matched with my Motion 8 center , ESL fronts and dynamo 700W.

Pros: The tweeters, the tweeters, I think I already said that.

Cons:

Oskar Heil, you were amazing

Written by: KentS from San Antonio, TX on December 20, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Martin Logan speakers rock! Using them in a 5.1 AV system. I am and have been a fan of this style tweeter since Oskar Heil invented the Air Motion Transformer in the early seventies. If you love crisp, clean high frequencies in your music, this is the speaker for you. Only issue is the lack of bass response and that is easily remedied with a quality subwoofer.

Pros: Crisp, clean highs. Compact size Quality of materials used.

Cons: Lack of bass response

Features

Folded Motion Tweeter: MartinLogan's Folded Motion Tweeter helps give the Motion 4 bookshelf loudspeaker its natural, realistic high frequency sound. Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (8x that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, dynamic, and precise sound. The 1" x 1.4" Folded Motion Tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.

4" Paper Cone Woofer: The MartinLogan Motion 4 loudspeaker features a 4" paper cone woofer with a stamped steel basket housed in a non-resonant asymmetrical chamber. The paper cone woofer uses a rigid structured dust cap to reduce cone break-up and distortion. This 4" cone woofer provides rich, detailed midbass.

Precision Crossover: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the high frequency driver (tweeter) and the midbass driver (woofer), the Motion 4 loudspeaker features a precision 2900Hz crossover utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.

Folded Reflex Port Technology: MartinLogan engineers were faced with a daunting task, create a compact speaker with low-end bass reproduction found in speakers much larger. After a myriad of prototypes, they created the Folded Motion Cascading Bass Port. This brilliant solution allows a long tuned port, which is folded over itself (think of a trombone's tuning arm) to be compacted and squeezed into the Motion 4 bookshelf loudspeaker. The result is amazingly detailed low bass that can play at high volumes with minimum distortion; all thanks to the elegantly simple cascading fold that slows down and controls the air motion of the bass waves. The Folded Motion Cascading Bass Port exits the rear-panel of the speaker cabinet.

Curved High-Gloss Black Cabinet: Complementing the Motion 4 loudspeaker's sonic accuracy is its elegant, yet understated styling. A high-gloss, piano black finish and subtle curves, along with MartinLogan's signature perforated grille, give the Motion 4 speaker an elegant and timeless look that will blend into almost any decor.

Spring-Post Connectors: The MartinLogan Motion 4 speaker features two spring-post connectors to attach your speaker wire. The spring-posts will accept bare wire (16- to 10-gauge), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The rubber caps on the spring-post connectors must be removed to use banana plugs.

Versatile Mounting Options: The MartinLogan Motion 4 bookshelf loudspeaker can simply be placed on a table-top, stand, shelf, or other flat surface. Four self-adhesive rubber feet are included for safe and secure placement. Using the included keyhole-slot bracket, you can wall-mount the speaker at two different angles. This means you can point sound directly toward the desired listening area for high or low wall mounting applications. In addition the Motion 4 is fitted with a 1/4"-20 threaded insert which allows you to hang the speaker on the wall using optional articulating wall-mount brackets (sold separately).

  • If the Motion 4 is being mounted at approximately ear-level, the speaker should be oriented with the tweeter at the top. This will disperse sound directly towards the desired listening area.
  • If the Motion 4 is be mounted above ear-level, the speaker should be oriented with the tweeter at the bottom. This will disperse the sound down at a 20° angle towards the listening area.
Note: The MartinLogan logo badge on the Motion 4's grille can be re-position based on how you have the speaker mounted.
