The Motion 8 uses MartinLogan's acclaimed Folded Motion tweeter for smooth, effortless highs.
MartinLogan's elegant Motion 8 was designed for maximum performance and flexibility. This versatile speaker comes with brackets for easy wall-mounting. And because you can orient it horizontally or vertically, it makes a great center channel companion to other wall-mountable members of the Motion series, such as the Motion 2 or Motion 4. You can also use a trio of these speakers across your front left, center, and right channels for a seamless front soundstage.
The distinctive sound of the Motion series starts with MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter. Rather than a dome or cone driver, this tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm that works like an accordion by "squeezing" air to create sound. It requires about 90% less excursion than a typical 1" dome tweeter, resulting in quicker response time and much lower distortion. The tweeter's controlled sound dispersion creates a focused soundstage with a real sense of presence. Music and movie soundtracks sound amazingly detailed, but smooth and effortless, without a trace of harshness.
The Motion 8, shown here as a wall-mounted center channel speaker
The tweeter is flanked by two 4" doped paper cone woofers that supply accurate mids and bass. All three drivers are mounted in an eye-catching curved cabinet that's finished in classic high-gloss piano black. The Motion 8's subtle, modern lines complement just about any décor.
For even better bass — and especially for high-impact home theater — we recommend a powered subwoofer, like one of MartinLogan's excellent models.
The center channel speaker is the workhorse in a home theater system. It has to reproduce clear dialogue and special effects that keep your eyes and ears glued to the movie action. A high-quality center speaker is a great investment for any surround sound setup. Try to choose one that's as closely matched as possible to your front right and left speakers, so that as sound moves across the front stage, it stays seamlessly realistic.
The clarity from this center channel speaker is everything as advertised. This speaker not only sounds great but it looks great also.
Pros: Clarity is unsurpassed, both at higher volume and lower volume. I love this speaker
I was looking for a replacement for PSB center speaker as it was not giving a clear dialog in my sorround system. I was looking for a small size speaker which does not take up space like Polk speaker which I looked at first. Clear mid range for good voice reproduction.
Pros: Small size. Clear dialog.
I was looking to replace a Definitive center channel, after upgrading my mains to ML Motion 40s. The Motion 30, although a better speaker, seemed to be a bit of overkill given the size of the room. So far, I believe I chose wisely... It's crystal clear, matched dynamics, and has the groovy folded motion tweeter. Quite happy, and the soundstage is starting to widen and deepen as they break in.
Pros: Nice match for Motion 40s. Crystal clear
I listened to several and was won over by the Motion 8 when I heard it at a local home theatre installation store. The sound was detailed and crystal clear. They had it hooked up to some serious electronics and paired with the Motion 4s for the front sound stage. Sound was spectacular. It sounds almost as good in my home theatre pushed by an entry level Yamaha AVR. Really not much difference to my ear at all. This center channel was exactly what I was looking for - clear dialogue (I mean crystal clear), easily wall mountable, and reasonably sized. Pair this with the Motion 4s and a subwoofer and you will be set.
Pros: Clear detailed sound, mounts easily, light weight
Cons: Pricey but better than most at this price range
Recently purchased sub (Dynamo 500) and L/R speakers (LX-16) and this matched perfectly with them. Speech from movies was clear and sound from movies and music sources was clean and accurate.
Pros: Beautiful cabinet with the more important beautiful sound.
Very nice, it can hold its own. Dialogue is strong and clear
Pros: Crystal clear
Cons: Non so far
This speaker "woke" up my listening, I had not realized how muddy my Polk speakers were. Dialogue Was clear and crisp, midrange was excellent. Now I am replacing all my speakers, albeit slowly, with the ML motion series. They are made in Kansas, support is excellent and product is superb.
Pros: Great sound and looks
Nice center, a bit small as a match to the motion 40's

2-Way LCR Speaker: The MartinLogan Motion 8 LCR loudspeaker employs a 2-way speaker design and features MartinLogan's advanced resolution Folded Motion tweeter and two 4" paper cone woofers. Pairing these three drivers together creates a dynamic full-range sound with an expansive soundstage.
Precision Vojtko Crossover: To seamlessly blend the audio output from the Folded Motion tweeter and two 3.5" woofers, the Motion 8 loudspeaker features a precision Vojtko crossover (3000Hz) utilizing custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, polyester film capacitors in series, and low DF electrolytic capacitors in parallel.
Curved High-Gloss Black Sealed Cabinet: Complementing the Motion 8 loudspeaker's sonic accuracy is its elegant, yet understated styling. A high-gloss piano black finish, along with MartinLogan's signature perforated grille, give the Motion 8 speaker an elegant and timeless look that will blend into almost any decor. The speaker cabinet also features rounded edges and gently tapered top/sides. The cabinet is an acoustic suspension design (sealed) for tighter, accurate midbass.
Spring-Post Connectors: The MartinLogan Motion 8 speaker features two spring-post connectors to attach your speaker wire. The spring-posts will accept bare wire (16- to 10-gauge), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The rubber caps on the spring-post connectors must be removed to use banana plugs.
Applications: The MartinLogan Motion 8 LCR loudspeaker can be used as a center-channel speaker or paired with another Motion 8 speaker for a stereo or home theater front/rear application.
Mounting Options: The MartinLogan Motion 8 speaker can simply be placed horizontally on a flat-surface; such as a table-top, stand, shelf, or cabinet. Four rubber self-adhesive feet are included to prevent slippage and reduce vibration. Because of its curved cabinet, this speaker cannot be placed vertically on a flat-surface. The included wall-mount brackets and hardware let you mount this LCR speaker on the wall, horizontally or vertically.
Note: The MartinLogan logo badge on the Motion 8's grille can be re-position based on how you have the speaker mounted.
Break-in Period: Allow approximately 72 hours of break-in at 90 dB (moderate listening levels) before any critical listening.
Thought I'd add to this...as many of these answers are just flat out wrong! Martin Logan's literature says this regarding design... "Application: Stereo speaker or home theater center/front/surround ideal for large, medium, and small rooms." I use a pair of these with an in-wall subwoofer and they sound and look great! Use a receiver with the ability to simulate/phantom center channel and you'll probably be happy. They roll off -3dB below 70Hz...thus the reason for having a sub. Regarding mounting, they come with hardware and instructions for both horizontal and vertical mounting and the logo is removable and repositionable depending upon your choice. Both of mine came with the logos on the bottom short edge set up for vertical mounting. [ tdr21 Nov 24, 2015 ]
Roby, Depending on the size of your room, the MartinLogan Motion 8's would work fine as front-main speakers, as long as you combine this set-up with a subwoofer. These Motion 8's have incredible high and mid-end clarity at all volumes because of the combination of the folded motion tweeter and 2 woofers but I think you'd be lacking in fuller bass without a sub. I run my Motion 8 center-channel speaker with 2 MartinLogan ESL's for front-main speakers, 4 x MartinLogan Motion 4's as Surround and Surround-Back speakers, and the MartinLogan Dynamo 700W as my subwoofer, (with a JBL as a second subwoofer.) I doubt it would sound very good as main front speakers but it would work. [ Michael Dec 03, 2014 ]
I don't see why not. If you are planning to have them vertical, they would have to be mounted because the sides are angled. [ David Dec 03, 2014 ]
Don't know. It is designed as a center. Doesn't have any bass making ability to speak of. [ CHARLES Dec 03, 2014 ]
i'm guessing it would work, but it's not a good choice. The Motion 8 is a great speaker and I love it as a center speaker. But, as a front it'll be lacking in the low area(bass) and I wonder if it's too directional and would throw a small sound stage. I have Martin Logan Theos as my front mains. [ CALVIN L. I can assume that you would need two to create the stereo effect. This is not a dual channel speaker that I am aware of. [ Gordon F. Dec 03, 2014 ]
