Banish home security worries

The Y-cam Home Monitor helps you keep an eye on things from almost anywhere

The Y-cam Home Monitor helps you keep an eye on things from almost anywhere (tablet not included).

Worrying about your home when you're away can really put a damper on your vacation. That's why the Y-cam indoor home monitor is a must-have for peace of mind while away from home. Sophisticated motion detectors activate the Wi-Fi®-equipped video camera, and the video clips that result are saved online in the cloud (for free — no subscription necessary) for seven days for easy retrieval and download. You can watch live if you desire, and you can even have the camera send you email alerts when it detects motion. Viewing is easy on a web-connected PC, or via free apps for your Apple® iOS® and Android™ devices. You can even watch on your TV with a connected Roku® streaming box or an Apple TV® via AirPlay®.

It watches when you want it to

Don't worry that this will be a bandwidth hog for your Internet connection: the Y-cam home monitor only activates when you need it to, either via a predetermined schedule, or by motion occurring in the detection area. 30 infrared emitters invisibly illuminate an area up to 15 meters away from the camera at night, and they switch on automatically when it's dark. You can easily add additional cameras to your online account and control/monitor them jointly.

Secure and safe

Because the signals operate over your home's Wi-Fi network, the video streams are multi-layer-encrypted and secure from prying eyes. Setup is easy -- just connect your camera to a web-connected PC, create your account and you're off to the races in minutes.

Simple Security Sytem

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was a simple system to get running. Unbox, plug into wireless router, program, mount, adjust view and let run. A free and continuous 7 day cloud memory is included to view your cameras hits. One thing to know is if you are thinking about mounting inside to look outside, at night the IR lights will reflect off the inner window and that is the only thing that the camera will see. In that case turn off the IR and use an external flood light to illuminate that area for the camera. Simple programming for lights, email notifications, and to set your sensor boundaries to tell your camera to record.

Pros: Installation, and set up.

Exactly what I was looking for. Easy to set up. No fees video online for 1 week easily downloaded. Motion sensitivity works quite well. App is simple to use on my iPhone and easy to access video from the app on the phone. I will buy one more and my house will be covered.

Pros: Easy set up. Quality image. Free video storage. No ongoing fees. Good Wifi range

Cons: Really none. I have mine mounted inside but looking outside and I have some window glare in the morning.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as advertised. Very good color video, fair IR video. Nice set of control features accessed via web. Captured videos can easily be downloaded anytime within the 7-day window. Did have problem with initial setup, until I found using a different browser solved problem (using Mac, problem with Safari, worked with Firefox)

Pros: Reliable motion capture, very good color video. No problems with free video storage and camera control on Y-cam website. Control and replay works well on desktop computer and on iPhone.

Cons: Camera can only be used via Y-Cam web site.

Product Research

Overview: The HomeMonitor indoor camera, made by Y-Cam Solutions, is a network-connected security camera that allows you to monitor what's happening in and around your home using an internet-enabled computer or your smartphone. It is equipped with a wide angle lens, infrared LEDs that allow you to monitor in the dark, and a microphone. It sets up in minutes, and because HomeMonitor is network-compatible, you can monitor at home or away from home.

Video Camera: HomeMonitor has a wide-angle lens with a viewing angle of 60° horizontal and 45° vertical. The 310,000-pixel 1/4" CMOS image sensor outputs a video signal with 640 x 480 resolution at 30 frames per second. The built-in microphone picks up any sound in the room. Surrounding the lens are 30 infrared LEDs that provide a viewing distance of up to 15 meters (49 feet) in total darkness.

Network Connection: You can connect HomeMonitor to your home network, either with Wi-Fi or plugged into your router with the supplied network cable. You will need to connect the camera to your router for the initial setup, even if you plan on using it wirelessly. HomeMonitor will work with HomePlug/Powerline technologies, so you can use it in areas in the home where Wi-Fi isn't available.

High Speed Internet: HomeMonitor will work with virtually all forms of high-speed internet, including Broadband, ADSL, DSL, Cable, FiOS, and if you have a suitable router, 3G and 4G. A minimum upload speed of 256kbps and 0.2Mb per second per camera is recommended. Download speed will only matter when watching or downloading from the HomeMonitor portal.

Smartphone Compatible: There are apps available for iOS (5.1 and higher), Android (2.3.1 and higher), and Roku. You can access HomeMonitor with your smartphone, tablet, or SmartTV. In addition, you can turn the camera on or off, control recording and notification email settings, or watch recorded clips or live video and audio over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G. Archived clips stored on your iOS device can also be transferred for viewing on your Apple TV via Airplay.

Online Account: Once you have connected the camera to power and your home network, you will need to set up a free personal online account (no subscription required). The camera records audio and video automatically to your your own secure account in the cloud. An unlimited number of clips is stored on your account for 7 days at no charge. You can access your account from anywhere on your PC or smartphone. You can add multiple cameras, including cameras at different locations, onto the same account.

Motion Detection Alerts: When HomeMonitor detects motion, it triggers recording, and, if desired, can send you an email alert. You can adjust the sensitivity of the motion detector to prevent false alerts caused by active pets or children, sunlight, or reflections of light.

Mounting: HomeMonitor comes with a versatile mounting bracket that allows you to place the unit on a shelf or mount it to a wall. Once the monitor is mounted, you can adjust the camera angle and tighten the ball joint to lock it into position. The unit has a standard 1/4"-20 socket, so you can use a third party wall/ceiling mount bracket, if desired.

Capturing a Prison Break on Video

Written by Erica S., Crutchfield Web Designer, on 5/15/2014 1:09:00 PM

Cats are clever creatures. I own two of them, and am constantly surprised (and exasperated) at what they can accomplish. While I love the little critters, I love getting a good night's sleep even more. So they get shut in a basement room at bedtime.

Recently, one of the cats figured out how to escape, but she wasn't doing it through the one and only door to the room. I decided to set up a HomeMonitor Indoor Y-cam to catch her in the act. I wanted something that was simple and fast to set up, because she continued to break out of the basement room every single night after the first escape and I was losing sleep over it. Literally.

Setting up the Y-cam to connect to my wireless router was quick and straightforward. HomeMonitor's website is clean and uncluttered, and easy to navigate. The ability to adjust the motion-sensitivity settings was key in capturing the kitty escape.

While most people probably don't want their pets' motion to trip the sensors, this was an instance where it was desired. I was also extremely impressed with the quality of the video in infrared mode. Even without any light, I could clearly see what was happening in the frame.

Turns out my little Houdini was jumping onto the water heater and then up to an area underneath the ceiling where a steel I-beam traverses the width of the house. She used the beam as a bridge to cross from the basement room to a closet across the hallway. Once in that closet, she just pushed her way out of the folding doors and was free. For a few nights, anyway!
