About the Pivothead Durango

Woody Sherman

What you see is what you get

Point-of-view action cameras provide one of the most involving experiences you can put on a screen. Letting your intended audience see for themselves the thrills and spills of motorcycle racing, or downhill skiing, or wind-surfing, or paragliding... well, you get the idea. It's pretty intense. But there's always been one hitch: where do you mount the camera? Many companies provide a handy spectrum of mounting accessories, but they can take time and a little ingenuity to make secure. Plus, if your goal is to really show the world the angle you see, a helmet camera — on top or on the side of your head — isn't quite the answer.

The Pivothead Durango sport sunglasses feature a bridge-mounted point-of-view camera.

Versatile features in a wearable design

Perhaps it's time for a truly wearable point-of-view camera to come to the head of the class. Pivothead has made it happen with this exciting new hybrid of fashionable sunglasses and high-tech, high-definition camera. High-def video of up to 1080/30p resolution records directly to the 8 gigabytes of on-board memory. Continuous-burst and time-lapse still shooting is a breeze, with a variety of rates and resolutions available. And, with the Air Pivothead Wi-Fi® Drive accessory (not included), you can use apps for Apple® iOS® and Android™ smart devices to monitor and transfer your videos to where they can be preserved or passed on to others.

The Pivothead Durango combines a rugged design with firm sense of fashion, at home on the street or the ski slopes. Sturdy rubberized-armor frames host a variety of specialized lenses.

Features

Pivothead Wearable Imaging: Pivothead Wearable Imaging can record full HD video, still images, and time-lapse photography on a tiny 8 MP camera installed in a pair of fashionable sunglasses. Video and images are stored on a built-in 8 GB flash memory. Pivothead eyewear can give you true point-of-view life recording.

Lens: Pivothead Video Recording Eyewear features a 4-element, Largan glass lens with a 75° field-of-view. There are four focusing options for video: Continuous Focus, Auto Focus (4" to infinity), Fixed Focus (2.8' to infinity), and Macro Focus (4" to 28"). You can also choose between Auto Focus and Macro Focus for shooting still images.

Video Options: The camera has an 8 mega-pixel Sony CMOS image sensor. You can record full HD video (1920 x 1080/30p), or choose 1280 x 720p at 60 or 30 fps. Video options include Normal, Black & White, Face Tracking, or Time/Date Stamp. Video is recorded in MPEG-4/H.264 format. Audio is recorded at 44.1kHz AAC mono using the built-in wind-resistant microphone.

Still Image Options: In addition to recording Full HD video, Pivothead cameras can shoot still images in 8MP, 5MP, and 3MP image sizes. You can also shoot multiple image bursts of 16, 10, 5, or 3 shots. Exposure can be set to Bright, Dim, or Automatic, with selectable ISO at Auto, 200, 800, or 1600. You can shoot color or black & white still images.

Time-Lapse Photos: Shooting Time-Lapse photos let you compress a long period of time into minutes or seconds. There are six Time-Lapse options: 1 shot every 1 second, 1 shot every 30 seconds, 4 shots every 8 seconds, 4 shots every 30 seconds, 10 shots every 30 seconds, or 5 shots every 60 seconds.

Controls/Indicators: There are only two controls on the Pivothead: a power switch and a two-way rubberized Pivotswitch control--press one way to record video and press the other way to record still images. The camera's settings can be controlled using the Pivotswitch. Three LEDs provide status indication for recording (red), charging (green), and power (blue). When changing camera settings the LEDs flash to confirm the settings.

External Control: If you connect the Pivothead glasses to your computer via USB, you can change the camera settings, including video/still image modes, focus, burst modes, and exposure. With the optional Air Pivothead, you can change settings, as well as view videos and still images, wirelessly on your connected smartphone or Wi-Fi device.

Storage Capacity: The built-in 8 GB flash memory will allow you to store approximately 1 hour of Full HD video (1080p/30 fps), 2 hours of 720p/30 fps video, or 45 minutes of 720p/60 fps video.

Battery: The unit is powered by a 3.7-volt Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery with a capacity of 440 mAh. A fully charged battery will provide approximately 1 hour of continuous recording in Full HD (1080p/30 fps)

USB: The Pivothead video recording eyewear has a micro USB port on the right earpiece, which is used for charging the battery and to transfer your videos and still images.

Durango Model: The Durango Chameleon (BL14) model has the following features:

  • Frames: The matte black frames are made of durable, lightweight Grilamid TR90. They are impact resistant, UV fade resistant, and temperature resistant with an adjustable, form-fitting nosepad.
  • Lenses: The photochromic clear-to-gray polycarbonate lenses block 100% of UV A/B/C rays. The lenses are also impact resistant (ANSI Z80.3 standard).

Warranty Note: The warranty for this Pivothead product is 1 Year Parts and Labor. The warranty card included with the product (stating 90 Days P & L) is incorrect.
