Wi-Fi controls

This handheld recorder uses built-in Wi-Fi to establish a wireless connection with your smartphone or tablet. With the free Tascam control app - available for both Apple® and AndroidT - your Wi-Fi device becomes a powerful remote for the recorder. The app not only lets you start and stop recording, but also adjust levels and EQ - right from your device. The DR-44WL creates its own Wi-Fi connection, so it doesn't require a router. That means you can enjoy convenient smartphone control just about anywhere.

Record and share

You can simultaneously capture a high-resolution recording and a smaller MP3 file that's easier to share via the Internet. Wirelessly transfer the MP3 to your smartphone or tablet and upload it to SoundCloud, Facebook, or other social media sites.

Versatile recording options

The DR-44WL has a dual-level recording option that simultaneously records two stereo files at different levels. This ensures you always have a safety track if levels run too high. The built in low-cut filter reduces low-frequency noise like wind if you're recording outdoors. And you can enable any combination of these features using the recorder's simple push-button controls and LCD screen or from the control app.

Capture recordings on microSD cards, either as space-saving MP3s or as high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz WAV files. Transfer files to your computer via USB for playback and editing, or via a Wi-Fi connection to your smartphone or tablet.

Playback and editing options

In addition to the DR-44WL's built-in speaker, you can monitor playback with a pair of headphones through the recorder's minijack output. During playback, you can add up to 99 markers to a recording, so you can easily highlight key moments from a speech or a rehearsal. And you can use the markers for some simple on-board editing, like separating a track into multiple parts or deleting extraneous material. Record an entire band performance and save a particular highlight as a short snippet for easy access. Or loop that section in the rehearsal studio so you can re-learn that brilliant improvised riff you just came up with.

Handy accessories

The DR-44WL comes with a mic stand adapter and a shoe adapter for mounting options. It also features a fur windscreen, ideal for outdoor recording. The recorder is powered by 4 supplied "AA" batteries for mobile use. Or you can use the included AC adapter to keep your DR-44WL powered during long recording sessions indoors.

    General Features

Overview: The TASCAM DR-44WL is a hand-held portable 4-track digital recorder that is designed for musicians and photojournalists. You can make high quality recordings using the WAV format (including Broadcast Wave Format compatible), or a large number of recordings in MP3. The recorder includes a slot for a SD/SDHC/SDXC card, and includes a 4 GB card for hours of recording time. It has two built-in microphones, two External Mic/Line Inputs, a mono speaker, and a line/headphone output. The DR-44WL operates on four AA batteries (included), AC (adapter included), or USB (cable included).

Blackfin Processor: The DR-44WL is equipped with a Blackfin 16/32-bit embedded processor made by Analog Devices. The processor controls digital signal processing, enhances performance, and reduces power consumption.

Built-in Wi-Fi: The recorder has built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz) that allows you to control the device, transfer files, and stream audio to your smartphone or PC. Using the TASCAM DR Control app (available via free download for iOS and Android), you can start and stop recordings from across the room, search for and play back files, adjust recording levels, switch on the low-cut filter, and other functions. Audio from the recording can be streamed to your smartphone so you can check the recording using the headphone jack. Recorded tracks can be wirelessly transferred to your smartphone or laptop, and uploaded to SoundCloud for uploading to Facebook, Twitter, or other social media. Music files can also be emailed from the app. The app is available for iOS devices running iOS 6.0 and newer, or Android devices operating on Android 4.0.3 and up.

LCD Display: The DR-44WL features a 2-3/8" (diagonal), backlit, monochrome LCD (128 x 128 pixels) which indicates recording and playback information. The recorder will display the elapsed or remaining recording time in hours, minutes, and seconds.

Date and Time: The recorder features a built-in clock. If you have set the time and date, information as to when a sound file was recorded is stored automatically with that file.

Microphones: The unit features two high quality cardioid condenser microphones mounted on the top of the recorder. The mics are angled in XY configuration to give you ideal stereo imaging. Each mic capsule is mounted into its own shock mount to prevent vibrations from being picked up on the recording. The angle of the microphones cannot be adjusted. The mic capsules are able to withstand up to 132dB SPL without distortion, so you can record concerts and rehearsals without worrying about clipping.

Mic/Line External Inputs: Located on the bottom panel are two XLR-1/4" combo inputs for connecting an external mic or an external device. The inputs will accept either balanced or unbalanced signals. If the external microphone requires plug-in power, the DR-44WL can be set to supply 24V or 48V phantom power. When recording in 4-channel mode, both the built-in mics and the external inputs are used.

Low Cut Filter: The device features a low-cut filter that can be engaged to reduce noise, such as wind noise, during recording. The low-cut filter can by applied to each channel independently. You can set the cut-off frequency at 40Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, or 220Hz.

SD Card Slot: The DR-44WL Digital Recorder features a slot for inserting an SD card. The recorder is compatible with SD cards from 64 MB to 2 GB, SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards from 48GB to 128GB in size. A 4 GB microSD memory card (with a full-size adapter) is included. The maximum recording time is as follows:

File Format Recording Setting Max Recording Time (4 GB)
    WAV/BWF
    (stereo)
    16-bit 44.1kHz 6h 17m
    96kHz 2h 53m

    320 kbps 27h 46m
Note: For Dual Recording in WAV/BWF format and 4-channel recording, the maximum recording time will be half the figures above.

Formatting Memory Cards: Memory cards can be formatted in the unit to prepare them for use. Formatting will erase all of the data on the card.

USB: The DR-44WL has a Micro-B (High speed) USB port on the side for connecting the recorder to your computer for transferring files or for providing USB bus power. A short USB cable is provided with the unit. The included GPE053B AC adapter plugs into the USB port for operating the unit on ordinary household current. The DR-44WL is compatible with the following Operating Systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 (including 8.1) and Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

Tripod Socket: The DR-44WL is equipped with a standard 1/4" tripod socket on the bottom so you can mount the recorder onto a tripod, if desired. The tripod socket is also used with the included shoe adapter for attaching the recorder to the top of a DSLR with an accessory shoe, or for attaching the supplied hand-held grip handle.

    Recording Features

Recording Format: The DR-44WL records audio files in WAV/BWF and MP3 formats. You can record 4 mono channels independently, 2 stereo files, or 1 stereo + up to 2 mono files. Files can be recorded simultaneously, or in multi-track mode with overdubbing. You can choose from the following recording options:

    • WAV/BWF: 44.1/48/96 kHz, 16/24-bit
    • MP3: 44.1/48 kHz, 32k / 64k / 96k / 128k / 192k / 256k / 320kbps

Recording Levels: After selecting the recording mode and inputs, you can adjust the input levels to prevent recorded sounds from being distorted due to excessively high input signals, or from being inaudible due to excessively low input signals, compared to noise. There are two level adjustment functions:

    • Peak Reduction: The input volume is reduced automatically to an appropriate level when excessive high signals come in.
    • Limiter: Engaging the limiter prevents distortion of sounds when excessive high input signals come in suddenly. This mode is suitable for live performances with large volume changes. You can adjust the level manually during recording.

Input Settings: The Input Settings screen lets you configure the four channels to the recording you'll make. For each input, you can set the following:

    • Link: In 4-channel mode, you can link together channels 1 and 2, as well as channels 3 and 4. When channels are linked, the input settings are shared.
    • Input: In MTR (multi-track recording) mode, you can choose the input: Internal Left, Internal Right, External Left, External Right).
    • Delay: You can correct a time delay that occurs when the built-in microphones are far away from an external microphone. You can set the delay value between 0 ms and 300 ms.
    • Low-Cut: The Low-Cut filter can reduce wind noise, and other low-frequency noise from air conditioners and projectors. The cut-off frequency can be set to 40Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, or 220Hz.
    • Level Control: The level control function can be set to Limiter, Peak, or Off. (See above for definitions.)

File Names: Each time a file is recorded, a file name is assigned to the recording. The file name can be either a word or a date. You can set the word file name, while the date file name is automatically set using the unit's internal clock. Special file names are created for 4-channel or multi-track files.

Marks: The DR-44WL lets you place an electric mark in a recording to identify specific points in the recording. Mark information is stored in the file with numbers between 01 and 99. Marks stored in a WAV file are BWF-compliant, and can be added automatically or manually. During playback, you can immediately move to marks in the currently selected file when paused.

Auto Recording and Pre-Recording: When the Auto Record function is enabled, the unit will start and pause recording, and create new files automatically in response to input sound levels. The level that activates auto recording can be set to -6dB, -12dB, -24dB, or -48dB. Pre-recording enables you to start recording up to 2 seconds before you press the Record button. This enables you to avoid missing the exact moment a recordable event begins.

Self Timer: Like a camera, the recorder's self timer lets you start a recording after a set period of time. Self timers can be set to 5 seconds or 10 seconds.

    Edit and Playback Functions

Playing Back Files: The DR-44WL lets you view the contents of the Music Folder containing the audio files on the microSD card. You can play or erase selected audio files, organize them into folders, and add tracks to the playlist.

Playback Function Screen: The Playback Control screen lets you create loops, and change the speed or key of the recording:

    • Loop: You can create a loop by marking the beginning and end of a section of the file to playback repeatedly.
    • Speed: The VSA (Variable Speed Audition) function lets you change the playback speed without changing the pitch. This allows you to slow down or speed up a file while maintaining normal sounding audio. The playback speed can be set between 0.5x to 2.0x in increments of 0.1x.
    • Key: The playback pitch of the file can be varied using the Key and Fine Tune functions. The Key function can adjust the pitch up or down by + or - 6 half-tones. The Fine Tune function lets you move the key up or down by -50% or +50% .

Divide: A recorded WAV file can be divided into two at a specified position. This allows you to edit out unwanted portions of a track by placing them in a separate track and deleting them. MP3 files cannot be divided.

Mixer: The Mixer functions can be used for adding effects, and vary the left/right positions of the volume balance. The mixer controls let you vary the Send, Pan, Level, and Return values, as desired. You can add the following reverb effects to any of the inputs: Hall 1 (bright), Hall 2 (warm), Room, Studio, Plate 1 (bright), and Plate 2 (warm).

Tuner: You can tune your musical instruments using the built-in chromatic tuner. The chromatic tuner will measure the played note against the selected reference frequency, and displays a bar graph to show whether the sound is flat, sharp, or in tune. There is an oscillator mode that will output the reference frequency so you can manually tune the instrument to the tone.

Metronome: The built-in metronome will output a click, stick, or bell sound at a desired tempo between 20 and 250 beats per minute. You can also choose a time signature between 1/1 and 1/9, with the first beat accented.
