About the Tascam CD-RW900MKII

Dave Bar
Tascam's CD-RW900MKII professional CD recorder offers outstanding performance and convenience at a price that won't break the bank.

Tascam's CD-RW900MKII professional CD recorder offers outstanding performance and convenience at a price that won't break the bank.

This versatile recorder features a new TEAC-designed tray-loading transport to ensure reliable, long-term operation in the most demanding installations. In addition, the new transport allows you to write track markers without a gap, for seamless continuous live recordings — something not possible using off-the-shelf PC drives. You also get your choice of three track division functions — automatic, time-based, and manual — to make recording simpler and help create polished recordings without the need for constant supervision. Plus, a record-mute function can insert silence between tracks.

Other useful recording features include a digital input level control as well as independent left and right analog trim controls for setting optimal recording levels. A high-performance processor is used for analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion for clean, clear sound quality with wide frequency response and dynamic range.

TASCAM CD-RW900MKII

Flexible and easy to use

Analog plus optical and coaxial digital audio inputs and outputs offer simple connections to a recording console. A built-in pitch control lets you adjust pitch and tempo during playback — great for musicians, dancers, and fitness instructors. For monitoring or private listening, the CD-RW900MKII includes a headphone jack on the front panel with a volume control. And the included remote has number keys for quick access to a specific track.

More details on the Tascam CD-RW900MKII

Product Research

Features

CD Recorder: The Teac CD-RW900MKII is a professional CD recorder with analog and digital inputs/outputs for recording of your external audio sources.

Reliable CD Transport: The new Teac transport (CD-W5600S) was designed for audio use; not a re-packaged computer drive. The tray-loading design provides a stable platter to minimize errors while writing the disc. Improved firmware allows the transport to write track markers without a gap, for seamless continuous live recordings.

High-Quality AD/DA Conversion: A high-quality DAC is used for AD/DA conversion for clean, clear sound quality with a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz (+/-0.8dB).

Disc Compatibility: The following disc type can be played back by the Teac CD-RW900MKII.

  • Commercial pre-recorded CDs recorded in CD-DA format (44.1kHz, 16-bit)
  • CD-R and CD-RW disc that have been recorded in CD-DA format (44.1kHz, 16-bit) and finalized properly
  • MP3 files (44.1kHz, 64-320kbps) recorded in ISO9660 level 1/level 2 format on CD-R and CD-RW disc, and properly finalized
Note: The CD-RW900MKII can recognize up to 255 folders and 999 files on a recorded MP3 CD-R/RW disc.

Shockproof Memory: A RAM buffer stores audio data in memory to ensure smooth playback, even if shock or vibration lasts for up to four seconds.

Analog & Digital Inputs/Outputs: Unbalanced analog, plus S/PDIF coaxial and optical connections are provided for connection flexibility. The CD-R900MKII features a stereo analog RCA input and output, a coaxial digital input and output, and an optical (toslink) digital input and output.

Independent Input Trim Controls: Both the left and right analog inputs have their own analog input gain controls. In addition, the digital input can be controlled for optimal recording levels from a digital source.

Headphone Jack: The CD-RW900MKII also includes a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for record monitoring and playback listening.

Playback Functions: Even if you don't need to record every day, the CD-RW900MKII makes an excellent CD player. Functions including auto-cue, auto-ready, pitch control, program, random/repeat, and more are provided.

  • Auto Cue: Using the auto cue function, you can select a cue point where sound begins (not where a track begins) within a track.
  • Auto Ready: This function allows the playing back a single track, and the automatic cuing of the next track ready for playback.
  • Pitch Control: When playing back an audio CD, the pitch (or speed) of the playback can be varied (+/-16%).
  • Program Play: This function enables playback of selected tracks in any desired order (up to 99 tracks).
  • Random Play: In this mode, the unit will play back all the tracks on the disc in completely random order; regardless of track number.
  • Repeat Play (A/B): In this mode, all the tracks on a disc are played continuously. If a specific portion between two points on the disc is specified, that portion can be played back repeatedly.
  • Timer Playback: By using an external timer,  you can set the CD-R900MKII to play the loaded disc automatically when the unit is turned on by the time.

Track Division Functions: The CD-RW900MKII offers a variety of track division functions to make recording simpler.

  • Automatic Track Division: A track marker can be created based on the input level, adding a new track when the input falls below a specified level (from -24 to -72dB).
  • Time Track Division: Time-based track creation can be set every 1-10 minutes. This method is preferred in some applications like conference recording, when there is no gap between segments like there is when recording music.
  • Manual Track Division: A new track can be written manually by pressing the Record key while the unit is in record mode.
  • Rec-Mute: The Rec-Mute function can insert silence between recorded tracks.

Fade In/Fade Out: At the beginning and the end of a recording, fade-in and fade-out effects can be performed. The length of the fade-in/out can be set between 1-30 seconds.

Synchronized Recording: Synchronized recording basically means that recording will begin automatically when a signal is received, and will stop when a signal ends.

Disc/Track Titles: You can use the Text Edit option to provide titles to your recorded discs and tracks. A PC-compatible keyboard can be connected to the unit's PS/2 interface on the front panel to make it easier to input titles.

Note: The PS/2 port is an older protocol that will require a USB to PS/2 adapter (sold separately) when using a newer USB keyboard.

Wireless Remote Control: The Teach CD-RW900MKII includes an IR remote control for wireless operating of the CD recorder. The remote is powered by two "AAA" batteries (included). The remote's operating range is approximately 7 meters (23') at an angle of 15° left or right.

Rack Mountable: The CD-RW900MKII comes out of the box with rack ears installed. The unit will fit into a 2U rack-mount space, however it is recommended to leave 1U of space above and 4" behind the unit for proper ventilation. If needed, the player's 4 rubber feet can be removed when rack-mounting. Four rack-mounting screws with rubber washers are included.

Q
Can I record from a cassette to a USB drive ?
thomas  Jun 02, 2022
1 answer
A
Great question Thomas. The Tascam CDRW900MKII is a CD recorder. You can only record to a blank CD disc, but you can connect your cassette player to it and record to the blank CD.

Q
Does this recorder have a DAC,if so what kind ?
steve  Dec 19, 2021

A
It has a DAC for playback and ADC for recording. If you mean by what kind - input/ output- it's RCA and optical. I don't know what internal conversion chip specs are but the manual or product information sheet should have it.
william k  Dec 19, 2021
A
It does have a DAC, what kind? I don't know, you can always use a digital output to your processor or receiver.

I wish I could help. I love the recorder but I have only been burning old albums to disc. I am sure you can add a additional cd through one of the inputs but better to ask the experts at Crutchfield. I tend to burn all of my cd copies using iTunes on my Mac computer. Copies come out great. Rich Geary

Check with Crutchfield advisors to get the information needed for your cd player.
kirkwood a  Aug 22, 2021

It depends on the outputs on the Yamaha - if it has normal RCA phono jacks as outputs then yes you can record directly on to the Tascam with a patch cord.
john  Aug 21, 2021
A
Yes, you can just split the audio output from the cd changer and take one side of that split into the tascam cd recorder
steven  Aug 21, 2021

Thanks. Appreciate it.
lee  Aug 20, 2021
A
Yes, you should be able to record CDs from your Yamaha. You don't even need the amplifier if you have headphones. Good Luck!!

Lee, I don't think so. I have a Tascam CD Recorder. It's fantastic. You can make creative custom CD mixes or copy an entire CD. That's the route I would go. Best, Rob

Q
Can you record straight from the cassette to the CD?
carl  Apr 02, 2021
6 answers
A
yes as long as you connect your cassette player directly to the analog inputs of this cd recorder. You can monitor the sound as it is recording.
perry  Apr 03, 2021
A
Yes, But cassettes have a ton of background noise, hiss etc. Better to go from vinyl for better sound quality. I record digitally from my CD player to my Tascam with an optical cord.
robin  Apr 02, 2021
A
Yes .
edward  Apr 02, 2021
A
This CD recorder does not have a cassette player but you can record directly from another cassette player to this unit using RCA cables.
william k  Apr 02, 2021
A
Yes you can. You can hook your cassette unit directly to the CD recorder or hook up to a receiver and record that way.
donald  Apr 02, 2021
A
Sure you can. You don't have run the tape deck into a pre amp or integrated amp if you don't want to. Just connect the tape deck outputs to the analog inputs on the recorder. Play some music from the tape to set levels properly and record. The manual covers it all in detail on how to record an analog signal. Hope this helps you make the purchase, it's an excellent piece of equipment! Enter

Q
how do i record my casette tapes do ni have to buy more stuff?
chuck  Nov 01, 2020

A
You will need a cassette player with an RCA output to connect to your CD recording unit. It requires an RCA cable also. This recorder works very well doing this.
william k  Nov 02, 2020
A
The unit has stereo RCA input, and output. It hooks up like another cassett deck to your amplifier. Has separate right/left volume meters that can be adjusted separately. Just need some kind of Amp, or rciever Amp that has an aux. Input, or second tape deck input, output. I use mine for analog play of tapes, and the CD record gives me a digital finished copy. Have an extra set of RCA cables. Just like an old style tape deck, and you are set. That is how I use mine anyway :))
robert w  Nov 02, 2020
A
Yes. Run cables from tape deck OUT ports to preamp/int amp/receiver TAPE IN ports and then from TAPE OUT ports to the Tascam ANALOG IN ports. I believe your preamp/int amp/receiver must have a TAPE OUT set of ports. Perhaps there are adaptors if it doesn't. Crutchfield provides the link to the manual in their listing for some basics (page 24) and a customer service rep can confirm and give you more details. Also, several internet audio forums can walk you through the process if there is any problem.
ross  Nov 01, 2020
A
You will need a cassette player that has composite audio (red and white) cable to go out of the cassette player and in the input on the cd recorder. Hope this helps.

can you record cd from mixer amp?
dennis  Sep 24, 2020

You can record analog unbalanced (RCA) connection, or digital signal with fiber optic. Please refer to the specifications listed in the user manual. Crutchfield has a link to the manual on the product page. You can compare that to the specs of your mixer amp.
richard  Oct 17, 2020
A
I don't have one, so I have never tried. I can recorded them from phono, cassette, and from a DVR.
david  Oct 08, 2020
A
As long as you connect the output from the mixer/amp to the analog input of the Tascam and select the analog input mode.

Q
Is there a sounds adjustment when recording cds?
peter  Aug 27, 2020
5 answers
A
It does have an input trim or adjustment.
william k  Dec 19, 2021
A
Yes. You can adjust the recording volume just like in a cassette deck.
james  Sep 01, 2020
A
I'm not sure what you mean by "sounds adjustment". The CD-RW900MKII records exactly what you put into it, whether it is digital input or analog. The only adjustment is record level which is adjusted using the function menus. Fine adjustment for balance for analog input is accomplished with the two level knobs on the right side of the recorder. There is no automatic level control. You adjust record level while monitoring the source program before actually recording a disc. Be sure that peaks do not cause meter to go into the red range.
richard  Aug 28, 2020
A
Yes there are controls for volume level when recording. When you are looking at the picture of the player, on the far right side of the controls, below the Timer functionality as the very top control, there are two input nobs - one for the left and one for the right.
brian  Aug 27, 2020
A
Yes. There is a imput level control for each channel (L and R).

A
Sorry Derek, I can't help you. I use this machine to record CDs.
robert s.  Sep 03, 2019
A
Yes. The Tascam CD-RW900MkII will play SACD's. However, it is not an SACD player per se. The unit will play SACD as if they were high quality CD's. The unit will not access the enhanced sonic features of SACD's.
fredrick  Sep 02, 2019
A
If your SACD is dual layered, and has CD comparability, then yes. The CD will play. However, if it's an SACD alone, it will not play on the Tascam. SACD can only play on an SACD player- which will also play CDs The Tascam is a great unit -particularly for the price. But if you will have to go higher if you've an SACD collection. The Tascam is not what you need. Good luck!

Are there 2 trays, how do you burn disc to disc?
edward  May 04, 2019

A
1 recording tray only.. Have not tried disc to disc would do this on computer. But have to thnk it would work the same as patching in any other plyback device.
mark  May 13, 2019
A
No sorry. There's one tray only. What i usually do is hook my laptop to the input to the deck and i guess you would say do it the hard way. Just record from the internet. Like you tube. But im sure you're looking for something like you said, a dual disc cd burner. Which i had trouble finding online. Keep googling for what you are looking for. And good luck in finding it.
john rocco  May 05, 2019
A
The CD-RW900MKII has only 1 tray, but it has analog, digital coax, and optical inputs. I have another CD machine that has optical output. I have had good results copying individual tracks in real time with both optical and analog cables, however I have not attempted to perform a fast complete disc copy, like with two drives on a computer. The user manual explains methods for entering track markers while recording. One issue with using the digital copying is if the source sampling rate is not standard. I have not encountered this as yet.
richard  May 04, 2019
A
Unfortunately there is only one drawer, so copying would need to be done from a separate source. It appears to me that there are no longer any companies manufacturing units with two drawers
richard a.  May 04, 2019
A
No...only one CD tray...if you want to burn disc to disc you will need another CD "player".
raymond m  May 04, 2019
A
There is only 1 tray, you would have to play disc from another player and record on the tascam
brian  May 04, 2019
A
There is only 1 tray. You need a cd player in addition.
bob  May 04, 2019
A
One tray. Copy disc from CD player.
robert  May 04, 2019
A
There is one cd tray. To burn disc to disc you connect another cd player to the input of the Tascam unit.
steven  May 04, 2019
A
There is only one tray, so you can't burn disc to disc directly using only one machine.

Q
I have an Onkyo A-9555 Amp., can I plug this into the MD IN/OUT? This analog audio input and output are for connecting an MD recorder with an analog audio input and output.
brian  Apr 16, 2019
3 answers
A
I haven't tried it but I see no reason why you can't. It should work fine. The recorder has both digital and analog inputs and outputs. Hope this is helpful.
dwight j.  Apr 29, 2019
A
My amp is pretty old and just takes analog inputs, so all I've done is go from the RCA connections. So I don't really know the answer. But my guess is that I could use an optical cable or RCA to go to and from a Sony Minidisc recorder (I assuem that's what MD means). The Tascam has the input and output for this as I recall.

Q
The tascam cd-rw900mkii seems to be what i'm looking for. It will be purchased expressly for recording vinyl to cd. I do have one nit picky thing to clarify. I need a single knob input control for edting purposes. In the pics i cannot tell if the left input/right input levels on the right side above the keyboard input are the only means of input level control. I'd prefer a single knob of control. Any hands on info?
timothy  Dec 25, 2018
6 answers
A
Alas, this unit is probably not what you're looking for. Input gain control is from two separate knobs. Everything else about this device is excellent.
steven  Dec 27, 2018
A
Unit is excellent for copying vinyl to cd. Yes they are the only means, it is awkward, but I manage quite well.
john  Dec 27, 2018
A
The left and right level controls are the only ones to control the unit. No one knob to control the unit.
muriel  Dec 27, 2018
A
Yes left and right are separate but there is a fader button on the remote that should do what you need
edmund  Dec 27, 2018
A
I'm not sure if I'm fully answering your question, but the left/right dials are for setting the levels with the analog input. With a digital input, level controls are handled mainly through the menu button and multi jog dial.
jeffrey  Dec 26, 2018
A
There are two input control knobs on the far right end of the front panel. The top one is left and the bottom one is right. This is the only way that I know to control the input level from an analog source. It's not that difficult. A note of caution this unit is unlike recording on a cassette deck. There is not much room for error by setting your input levels too high. I suggest you Set your peaks at no more than zero DB.

Q
Can I record music from another pre-recorded CD without getting a disc error because of the serial copy management system? Thanks in advance.
john  Apr 14, 2018
6 answers
A
I have not tried to record music from a pre-recorded CD, as I bought the unit to record from phonograph records and audio cassette tapes onto CD's. One thought: go to Crutchfield's product page for this unit and read/print and study the instruction manual. I just scanned the manual prior to writing this. Some of the "messages" listed on p. 32 suggest some restrictions in certain recording situations. If you can't do what you want directly, there are several workarounds. 1. Record your CD on your Apple iTunes program and make an MP3 recording at the slowest recording speed. Not ideal but it works well. I've done it in the past with very good results. 2. Record your source CD onto an audiotape or audio cassette and feed the audio signal into the CD burner. If you're only purchasing the unit to pirate CD's, I just don't have the expertise to give you a yes or no. However, if your purchase strategy is to buy a very fine CD player/recorder that gives you a great deal of flexibility, and re-recording CD's is only one of the things you want to do, you are looking at a fine piece of equipment. I love mine. I've found that very few audio devices that I've owned over the years do everything perfectly. Excellent performance overall is a good compromise if you can live with it, and this unit's performance is excellent for everything I use it for. Good luck!

I have been able to.

i never had a problem recording bought in store/prerecorded CDs from my Marantz deck into this Tascam. I'm recording some stuff for my wife to listen to, everything goes thru fine. Good luck.

The Tascam CD-RW900MKII does not use the serial copy management system because this CD recorder is a professional recorder, not a consumer recorder. In addition, you can use the less expensive non-music blank CDRs.

I've used it a lot without any error issues...serial copy management has not been a problem with my useage. No Finalizing problems either.

Because of copyright management, you can't record a whole pre-recorded CD from the manufacturer, or record one which you made. I had a Sony CD player and recorder. It had 2 CD slots. I could record tracks from the store bought CD to the blank CD. But, after I recorded to the blank CD, I could not use the recorded CD to burn to another blank CD. I guess Sony says, we will let you make a CD. But, after you make it, we won't let you burn it to another blank CD.

Q
I need a unit that will connect into my existing home audio set up and record CDs that i can play in my car. Will this do that?

This unit only has 1 CD tray so it will not record tracks from another CD. I tried to hook it up to my system to record from my CD player but could not figure it out. I returned this item and bought a Sony CD-R that had a separate tray for the blank CD-R.

I sing. would I be able to sing and record on a cd? is there an input for microphone.

By now you probably know that answer was not correct. The unit itself is a CD burner. Best option would be to get a small audio mixer . Plug mike into mixer to adjust you voice input. Output from mixer to input of Tascam.

A
Yes Kathy, you can record your voice on a cd. You'd have to get good microphone in order to do it and, you'll need a very good cd burner.

Q
Can you record from LP's to CD's?

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It can as long as either your turntable has a built in phono preamp or if it does not have this, then you get one to put in between the recorder and your turntable. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
