About the Tascam US-16x08

James Ralston

Manage big sessions with ease

Looking for a computer interface for your home studio that can handle full-band sessions — with a drum kit, bass, and other instruments? Tascam's US-16x08 can help. Eight mic inputs and a total of eight 1/4" TRS inputs give you lots of options for live multi-tracking. Two of those 1/4" inputs are switchable for directly plugging in high-Z instruments like an electric guitar or bass. And when you connect this interface to your Mac® or PC, you also get a built-in digital mixer, which lets you manage the inputs with an intuitive on-screen control — adjust volume levels and add EQ and compression independently for each input, for polished-sounding monitor mixes that will help keep the session players grooving and happy.

More details on the Tascam US-16x08

Product Research

Features

96kHz/24-bit Recording: The TASCAM US-16x08 is a USB audio interface that can record at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution. The higher resolution captures more digital detail in your music, making your recordings much smoother, even if you're recording for a CD or MP3 track.

Mic Preamps: The interface's XLR inputs (IN 1 through IN 8) feature Ultra-HDDA microphone preamps for clean, quiet audio quality from any type of microphone. The preamps have a 56dB gain range, which makes them ideal for dynamic, condenser, or ribbon mics. Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) technology is based on discrete components. Each input has a front panel gain knob.

Phantom Power: The US-16x08 supplies +48V phantom power to the XLR inputs for connecting condenser microphones. Separate switches on the front panel turns on phantom power in groups of four inputs independently (IN 1-4, IN 5-8).

TRS Inputs: The US-16x08 is equipped with eight TRS 1/4" inputs, including two on the front panel. The two front panel TRS inputs (IN 9 and IN 10) can be independently switched between instrument level (unbalanced) and line level (balanced) inputs. The rear panel TRS inputs (IN 11 through IN 16) are switchable between -10dB (unbalanced) and +4dB (balanced) in pairs. The Instrument/Line inputs each have a front panel level control, while the rear panel line inputs do not.

Balanced Outputs: The USB audio interface features eight TRS 1/4" balanced line outputs. The rated output level is +4dBu. If you simply need a stereo output, you can connect channels 1 and 2 to a pair of powered speakers, or to an amplifier and speakers. A rotary volume control is provided for the stereo line output. In Mic Preamp Mode, when the unit is not connected to a computer, each of the 8 mic inputs can be output through the 8 line outputs.

Headphone Output: The US-16x08 has a dedicated 1/4" TRS stereo headphone output with volume control. The headphone output has a robust maximum output of 70mW+70mW (THD+N 0.1% or less into 32-ohm load).

MIDI In/Out: The unit features standard 5-pin DIN MIDI input and output connectors, allowing you to connect it to keyboards or other MIDI devices. You can also send and receive MIDI time code signals to help synchronize a multi-track recorder and MIDI devices.

DAW Software Compatible: The US-16x08 has been tested and confirmed operation with several major DAW software titles, including SONAR, ProTools, Cubase, Live, Studio One, and Garage Band.

Computer System Requirements: The US-16x08 is compatible with computers with the following system requirements:

  • Windows: Windows 7 (32-bit SP1 or later, 64-bit SP1 or later), Windows 8.0 /8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit); USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port; CPU 2 GHz or faster, 2 GB or more memory; Display resolution: 1280 x 800.
  • Macintosh: OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), OS X 10.10 or later (Yosemite); USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port, CPU 2 GHz or faster, 2 GB or more memory; Display resolution: 1280 x 800.
  • iOS 7 or later: iPad 4 or later (requires a Lightning-to-USB adapter-sold separately)

Connections/Controls: The following inputs and outputs and controls can be found on the US-16x08:

  • Front Panel:
    • Standby/On switch
    • Phantom Power Switches: +48V to Inputs 1-4 On/Off, +48V to Inputs 5-8 On/Off
