Zoom iQ7

The free Zoom HandyRecorder app makes it easy to edit your recordings and apply on-board effects (iPhone not included).

Built-in controls for optimal recording

The iQ7 has two microphones — a mid mic to capture sound directly in front of your device, and a bidirectional side mic to capture the audio coming from the sides. Together these mics capture a three-dimensional, balanced soundfield.

Rotate the array one direction and you can point your iPhone at the sound source for clean audio recording – great for interviews. Turn the array the other way, and you're ready to record video on your device with the mics properly oriented.

A three-way switch lets you adjust the width of the stereo sound on the fly. You can keep it focused to 90°, open it to a wider 120°, or set it to “M-S” and record the audio raw letting you adjust the stereo balance later.

Zoom HandyRecording app

The Zoom HandyRecording app turns your Apple portable into a miniature recording studio. You can choose to record either in AAC format to save storage space, or in CD-quality 16-bit/44.1kHz PCM for full, uncompressed sound. You can also edit your tracks with the app, as well as apply different EQs and other effects. You can even manually adjust your EQ settings. And when you're done, you can upload your finished recordings to SoundCloud — all from within the Zoom app.

More details on the Zoom iQ7

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Zoom iQ7 is a high quality microphone designed specifically for use with a Lightning connector-equipped iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. You can use it for making great audio recordings, or for excellent audio for the videos recorded with your device. The microphone is adjustable, with separate positions for audio and video recording. The iQ7 comes with a foam windscreen, and a downloadable app for recording on your device.

Mid-Side Microphone: The iQ7 features two microphones in a Mid-Side (M-S) configuration. The directional Mid microphone covers the front while the bi-directional side mic covers the sides. The microphone can be aimed in one position for audio recording, and rotated 90° for making videos. An arrow on the top of the mid mic should be pointed toward the subject of the recording. Since the Lightning connector can be inserted in either direction, you can point the microphone away from the screen or toward the screen (for self-recording) and get perfect left-right stereo orientation.

Microphone Gain: The microphone features a large rotary Mic Gain knob for adjusting the recording level manually. Three LED lights beside the Mic Gain knob provide a level indicator: One LED (green) indicates the level is higher than -42 dB, two LEDs (green) light when the level reaches -12 dB, and three LEDs (2 green, 1 red) light at a level of -0.25 dB.

Stereo Width Switch: A 3-way switch lets you set the stereo width. You can select a stereo width of 90°, 120°, or M-S (mid-side). When M-S is selected, a "raw" recording is made without a stereo width setting. If using the Zoom HandyRecorder app, you can adjust the stereo width afterwards. If the recording is made on a third-party app, the stereo width is automatically set to 120°.

Lightning Connector: The iQ7 works with all Lightning connector-equipped iOS devices. It comes with an extended (3/8" long) Lightning connector, and a removable spacer that makes it compatible with many iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch cases. The iQ7's condenser mic receives power from the iOS device. Lightning connector-equipped devices include:

  • iPhone: iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5
  • iPad: iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2, iPad mini, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4th generation
  • iPod touch: iPod touch (5th generation)

Headphone/Monitor Output: The iQ7 has a 3.5mm headphone jack on the side of the microphone that allows you to monitor your recordings or listen to your recorded audio files. When using the HandyRecorder App, the audio input through the iQ7 is output directly from the stereo mini-jack without passing through the connected iOS device for latency-free direct monitoring. The mini-jack can also be used as a line level output for connecting to a mixer, amplifier, or powered studio monitors.

HandyRecorder App: Zoom's free HandyRecorder app allows you to record high quality audio with your iOS device. For best quality, recordings can be made in high-fidelity Linear PCM (WAV) at 44.1kHz/16-bit or 48kHz/16-bit. To save storage space, you can choose AAC compression at 64 kbps, 128 kbps, or 160 kbps bit rate. The app can be used to edit recorded files, add compressor, EQ, and reverb effects, and upload your recordings to SoundCloud or share by email. The HandyRecorder app is available from the iTunes App Store, and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 6.0 or later.
