A compromise between closed and open headphones

AKG K240 Studio

Practically the industry standard, the AKG K240 headphones provide the natural sound that's ideal for studio recording.

AKG designed the K240 Studio headphones for recording musicians and engineers. Their semi-open design allows high frequencies to shimmer with just enough airiness while maintaining powerful bass response. It also keeps midrange response natural, so guitars and vocals sound like they're supposed to sound.

Found in many pro studios, these cans are a no-brainer choice for outfitting your project studio or setting up a small home-recording rig for your computer.

Clean sound for the studio

AKG's patented Varimotion drivers deliver clear sound with extended dynamic range — that's useful during mixing, so you can accurately hear which frequencies or instruments need boosting or taming. Comfy earpads and a self-adjusting headband ensure you can keep at the mixing process until you're satisfied — not just until you're tired of wearing headphones.

An extra-long detachable cable gives you freedom to move, while 1/4" and 1/8" plug options allow you to connect to pro and consumer gear — from mixing boards and interfaces to smartphones and stereos.

I purchased the K240 to take some of the workload off of my old K280 Studio Monitors(that I've happily owned/used for a long long time). Well, the vacation for my K280 didn't last too long as the K240 within the first year started dropping the left channel. I could wriggle a certain portion of the cable and the audio would come back, but it was just a chain reaction of failures after that -1.Right side plastic housing fell apart 2. Left side housing shattered as I was packing it for warranty repair?!? Well I finally had it and invoked the two year factory warranty and I gotta say, AKG took care of me. I shipped it to them and they rebuilt humpty dumpty to like new condition, sadly I rarely use it since I got back due to its' past history. Sound quality, I love the neutral nature of my older K280 and was hoping the K240 would be the same, they are unfortunately not the same animal and the K240 tends to be very bassy. So if you love Bass you'll love the K240. The cable length is around 6'(or so) ,very adequate. Fit, finish and styling is very nice and quite similar to my older K280, I've always liked the Black and Gold scheme of the K240. Depending on how big your ears are this is either going to be an on your ear or around the ear headphone, I found the covered foam ear pads to be very comfortable for long listening and easy to clean. The headband automatically adjusts. The headphone cable is designed to be easily removed and replaced by the user if and when that time comes.

Pros: Looks as good as the classic AKG's. User replaceable audio cable. Standard Mini and Large plug options. Around ear headphones. Self adjusting headbands. If you love bass, these headphones are for you. Quick no hassle factory warranty resolution with my claim.

Cons: AKG is one of my favorite headphone makers but unfortunately the quality of the material(s) used in assembling my K240 really let them down. Left channel died within a year(troubleshot to bad audio cable), plastic voice coil pieces started falling apart on both sides. And I babied these headphones! Very bassy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The look nice, the cord has a dual 3.5mm/.250" jack with a nice gold-plated threaded adapter (best setup I've seen yet for this) and a mini-XLR on the left can only. Comfortable, even on my big head. They don't quite look "pro"--maybe low-end pro.

Sound is good, even, possibly a little bass-shy, but warm, even, not boomy. You will hear everything there is in a recording, the only issue is whether you hear it properly balanced. I used boost at 31.5/60/1000 and 8000 hz, cut at 125 and 2000 and I think it was better. If I listen on something where this is not possible, they still sound pretty good. It is difficult to drive them to a loud level (they are 55 ohms and apparently not that efficient), my Zenbook with Bang&Olufsen ICE amps and my Marantz 7008 are able to drive them OK, everything else comes up a bit short for full volume.

Overall decent headphones, well worth the money. Keep in mind these are open-back, so they don't insulate sound in either direction. They sound more like closed phones, unlike some open sets that really feel "open". This is because the are truly over-the-ear an have a big pad that seals pretty close at your skull.

Pros: Good, even, complete sound at very good price.

Cons: Audiophile Grade "B" at best, appear to be made OK, but not exceptionally well.
