About the AKG K72

Jeff Miller

A modern pair of over-ear monitors

AKG mics and headphones are found in many famous recording studios, and have been for years. But when the company designed their K72 closed-back studio headphones, they recognized music can be made in less traditional places. These days, songs are often recorded and mixed at home, in basements or bedrooms. The versatile AKG K72 'phones are designed to work well with pro recording gear or plugged directly into a laptop or tablet.

True, studio-friendly sound

The K72's large, 40mm drivers reproduce sound with the accuracy needed for creating music. Your tunes could ultimately be heard by people listening on everything from a state-of-the-art home system to a busted car radio. So you don't want any "flavoring" from your monitors, and these headphones help you hear what's really going on in your tracks.

We're fans of AKG's fit, sound, and noise isolation

I've noticed that many of my co-workers in IT wear AKG headphones at their desks. I ran downstairs and caught up with Christopher, Crutchfield.com's Art Director, and found out he was the primary AKG evangelist. "After trying out several headphones for work, I landed on a set of AKG over-ears," he said, "and I just started recommending them to everyone."

K72 Studio headphones

The AKG K72's self-adjusting headband provides a comfortable, secure fit while you work.

Chris had certain criteria, and he said the AKGs were the first headphones he tested to really nail them all. He chose a pair simlar to the AKG K72, with a closed-back design. "They have the richly detailed AKG sound and stay comfortable through my marathon music listening and video editing sessions," he told me. And Chris couldn't disturb co-workers with noise from his 'phones — just as you don't want your headphone mix bleeding into live mics in the studio. "Of the ones I tested," he said, "I found that closed-back AKG headphones do the best job keeping sound from escaping."

Comfortable, easy-to-adjust headband

Chris briefly mentioned comfort, but I don't want to gloss over something so essential to the long recording and mixing processes. Along with the soft leatherette earpads, the K72s feature a self-adjusting headband for a no-fuss fit. You just place the headphones on your head and they pop into place — set it and forget it. They stay secure while your work, yet don't clamp too tightly.

An extra-long detachable cable gives you freedom to move, while 1/4" and 1/8" plug options allow you to connect to pro and consumer gear.
