About the PreSonus StudioLive™ RM32AI

Buck Pomerantz

A smart mixer

PreSonus' StudioLive RM32AI rack-mount mixing console can save you time and aggravation, whether you're mixing in an unknown venue, or recalling all the settings and scene changes that worked so well for last Sunday's services, or running a virtual sound check while the musicians rest up at the hotel, or even letting the drummer adjust her own stage monitor mix with her smartphone. The StudioLive RM32AI can do all of that and much more.

Overwhelmingly convenient

PreSonus designed their StudioLive RM32AI 32-channel mixer to be controlled wirelessly via your computer as well as the touchscreen of your portable device. You rack-mount the RM32AI in a convenient place, let's say right next to the band, plug your microphones in the inputs, your mains and monitors to the outputs, and then set it all up into your own wireless control network.

Use your portable device as the mixer's control surface

After registering your new mixer online at my.PreSonus.com, you download their free UC Surface mix-control application. PreSonus' Active Integration™ puts the controls of your RM32AI mixer onto the surface of your display or touchscreen, giving you the power over a 32-channel PA mixer in the palm of your hand. As long as you're within WiFi range, you can control the mix wherever you are in a venue – front, center, left, right, or even back at the bar. The RM32AI comes with a USB WiFi adapter, which works great in small rooms, but adding your own wireless router increases the range and reliability of the wireless connection. Smartphone users can download the QMix-AI app to control individual monitor mixes, for instance.

32-in 18-out digital mixer

First of all, the PreSonus StudioLive RM32AI mixer can process 32 different input signals at once, and then combine them together to provide up to 18 different analog output mixes — stereo main outputs plus 16 auxiliary outputs for stage monitors or special effects. Second, you can connect your RM32AI as a digital interface, via a FireWire connection, harnessing the enormous power and versatility of PreSonus' multi-track signal processing expertise and software design to make fantastic recordings. Capture™ multitrack recording with virtual soundcheck and Studio One Artist DAW software are included in the free download package.

Fat Channel digital signal processing

PreSonus packs a large amount of digital signal processing into a small area known as the Fat Channel on the control surface, and it can be applied to every input, output, and effects bus. The Fat Channel includes gating, 4-band parametric EQ, dynamic compression, limiting, and a variable high-pass filter. You can save and recall Fat Channel settings, so you can quickly recreate a particularly good-sounding mic and instrument setup, for instance. Tired of re-EQing every time your guitarist switches from his Strat to his Les Paul? An A/B button lets you switch between two stored Fat Channel EQ/dynamic settings so you can change the sound quickly between songs.

Other digital features

A 31-band graphic EQ available on the main and auxiliary outputs help you tame room acoustics and eliminate feedback problems. Two reverb and two delay processors allow you to use four different kinds of ambient effects at the same time — and you can store and recall up to 100 effects presets, so you'll be ready for almost any special effects occasions when they arise. You can also store and recall up to 99 scenes, mixer settings, so you'll always have the ability to recreate those magic musical moments of a good past show.

Features

Overview: The PreSonus StudioLive RM32AI is a 32-channel digital mixer that can be used for live sound or recording. This RM-series mixer features 32 XLR balanced mic inputs, 16 XLR balanced mix outputs, and 3 XLR balanced main outputs (1 mono and 1 stereo). StudioLive RM-series mixers are based on Active Integration, a complete, networked, tightly integrated hardware/software ecosystem. With UC Surface software for Mac, Windows, and iOS, all of the controls are software-based, performed remotely from a laptop, iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. The StudioLive RM32AI is rack-mountable in 4 rack spaces.

Active Integration: The StudioLive RM32AI features Active Integration, which combines a powerful, 32-bit floating-point DSP, wireless and wired networking, USB 2.0 connectivity, and proprietary software to give you a new level of live sound and studio mixing capabilities. The StudioLive RM-series digital mixers include Wi-Fi remote control, as well as standard Ethernet communication and networking. Coupled with high-quality components and massive amounts of DSP processing, Active Integration provides a complete, networked, and integrated system.

Inputs: The StudioLive RM32AI is equipped with the following inputs:

  • 32 Mic Inputs: All 32 channels are equipped with balanced female XLR mic connectors with Class A XMAX solid-state preamplifiers. They are sonically identical to the preamps in the StudioLive AI series. All of the preamps are recallable, and their settings saved with a mixer scene.
  • Tape Input: This stereo unbalanced tape input features left and right RCA inputs. This lets you connect a stereo playback device, such as a CD player, MP3 player or other consumer device. These inputs accept consumer line-level signals (-10dBV nominal).

Outputs: The StudioLive RM32AI has the following outputs:

  • Mains: The separate left and right main outputs have balanced male XLR connectors. There is also a balanced male XLR mono output which carries a mono, summed version of the stereo signal from the main bus. Both outputs have a dedicated level control.
  • Mix Outputs: There are 16 Mix outputs, each with balanced male XLR connectors. The Mix Outputs are also carried on two rear-panel DB25 connectors labeled Mix Outputs 1-8 and Mix Outputs 9-16.
  • S/PDIF: The main mix is output in S/PDIF digital format on a rear-panel RCA coax jack..
  • Headphone Output: A 1/4" stereo headphone output is provided on the front panel for monitoring. The headphone out has a dedicated level control and source selection buttons for Main and Cue.

MIDI In/Out: The 5-pin MIDI I/O interface is not currently implemented. The jacks are for future expansion, and will be enabled in an upcoming firmware update.

Phantom Power: The StudioLive provides 48V phantom power for the microphone inputs on each channel. Phantom power is required for condenser mics, and can be individually enabled for each channel through the UC Surface software. Pressing the Meters/+48V button on the front panel will make the meters indicate which channels have phantom power enabled.

FireWire Ports: The Studio Live RM32AI has two 52-in/34-out, standard 9-pin FireWire s800 ports on the back panel. Either port can be used to connect the mixer to your computer for recording audio to, and playing back from, Capture, Studio One Artist, or another digital audio host application. The second port can be used to daisy-chain additional StudioLive RM32AI mixers, connect devices (such as an external hard drive), or to daisy-chain an interface for additional recording inputs. The FireWire connection is not necessary for mixing live sound.

Ethernet Port: A standard RJ45 jack is provided on the rear panel for connecting the StudioLive mixer to LAN network. When you add a wireless router, you can wirelessly control the unit from virtually anywhere, using a laptop, iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. This is especially helpful when you need to use your remote device in a different room from the mixer.

USB Port: The Type A USB port on the front panel is for use with the included USB Wi-Fi module. This USB dongle helps you connect your StudioLive RM-series mixer to a wireless network.

Signal Processing

Dual Fat Channels: The StudioLive RM32AI features Dual Fat Channel signal processing on all channels and buses. Using your touch-control software you can control the dynamics, routing, and panning for every input and output on the mixer at the touch of a Select button. The Fat Channel's processing section consists of five parts: High-Pass Filter, Noise Gate, Compressor, Limiter, and Parametric EQ. You can also do quick A/B comparisons of two complete sets of Fat Channel settings.

Dynamics Processing and EQ: The main function of the Fat Channel is to provide dynamics processing and filtering for every input and output. The processing section consists of the following parts:

  • High Pass Filter: Sweepable from Off to 1 kHz (slope: -6dB) (Main Channels and Aux Channels only)
  • Variable Low Pass Filter: On the Mono/Center bus
  • 4-band Parametric Equalizer:
    • Low EQ: 36 Hz to 465 Hz; ±15 dB, switchable shelf or peaking
    • Low/Mid EQ: 90 Hz to 1.2k Hz; ±15 dB, variable Q 0.1 to 4.0
    • High/Mid EQ: 380 Hz to 5 kHz; ±15 dB, variable Q 0.1 to 4.0
    • High EQ: 1.4 kHz to 18 kHz; ±15 dB, switchable shelf or peaking
  • Compressor:
    • Threshold: -56 to 0 dB
    • Ratio: 1:1 to 14:1, LIM=∞:1
    • Attack: 0.2 to 150 milliseconds
    • Release: 2.5 to 900 milliseconds
    • Makeup Gain: 0 to +28 dB
  • Gate: with sidechain
    • Threshold: 0 to -84 dB
    • Attack: 0.02 to 500 milliseconds
    • Release: 0.05 to 2 seconds
  • Limiter: On/Off
    • Variable Threshold: -28 dBFs to 0
    • Ratio: ∞:1

Graphic EQ: UC Surface includes a 31-band 1/3-octave Graphic EQ with ±15 dB gain/attenuation at the following center frequencies: 20Hz, 25Hz, 32Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, 250Hz, 320Hz, 400Hz, 500Hz, 640Hz, 800Hz, 1kHz, 1.3kHz, 1.6kHz, 2kHz, 2.5kHz, 3.2kHz, 4kHz, 5kHz, 6.4kHz, 8kHz, 10kHz, 13kHz, 16kHz, and 20kHz. Each band has a constant Q.

Effects: Four 32-bit floating point effects processors are provided on dedicated buses, two for reverb and two for delays. UC Surface contains a library of 50 custom reverb and delay presets. In addition you can create your own custom effects library.
