About the Mackie DL1608

Buck Pomerantz

iPad mixer for live shows

OK, how cool is this? When you dock your 4th generation iPad into Mackie's DL1608 interface console, it becomes the control surface of a full-featured 16-channel mixer with stereo outputs for your main PA speakers and 6 auxiliary outputs for different monitor mixs or special effects. The iPad app's bright, colorful graphics display the mixer's controls on your touchscreen so you can change a mix with the tip of your finger or adjust tone with a pinch. The powerful digital processing includes 4-band parametric equalization, a noise gate, and compression on every channel, so you'll have serious control over each individual channel's sound. Every output features a 31-band graphic EQ and a compressor/limiter for taming all the final mixes.

High-fidelity hardware

Mackie starts with their top-of-the-line Onyx mic preamps, which offer the superior performance of a vintage-sounding mic preamp with the toughness needed to handle the pitfalls of life on the road. Then they add 24-bit analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog (AD/DA) converters to handle the back-and-forth transitions between analog and digital signals smoothly, adding no coloration to the sound.

If you want to add some color to the mix, you can easily engage the "onboard" digital reverb and delay effects. When docked, your iPad becomes an integral part of the system, allowing you to play songs from your files and record performances to your iPad. You can even save and recall your mixer's settings for later shows or use recorded presets for fast and simple setups.

Add a wireless router and go mobile

Have you ever dreamed of mixing a live show on a mobile device so you could just walk around the room and make it sound perfect everywhere — even walk onstage and adjust a monitor's EQ during setup? Well, now you can. The DL1608 features an ethernet connection for your wireless WiFi router so you and your iPad mixer can go mobile. You could set your DL1608 interface on stage, for instance, and mix a band from a seat in the audience with nothing more than an iPad in your lap. Wireless operation allows up to 10 iPads (all models) or select iPhone® or iPod® Touch devices to control various aspects of the mix. That means each band member could control their own stage monitor mix with their own Apple device.

Personalized channel ID

Each channel features a user-editable ID button which lets you identify the channel by name and icon as well as number. And that's not all — you can place a photo or other image there so you can see exactly who or what the channel controls. You can even use the iPad's built-in camera to customize each channel ID. Imagine: right before the gig, walk up to each musician, take his or her picture, and apply it to their channel. If they're using their own mobile device to control a monitor mix, they'll see their own picture on their channel ID button.

    Features

Overview: The Mackie DL series mixer uses Onyx mic preamps to amplify the signal and high-end AD converters to convert the signal to digital. The mixer's powerful DSP chip processes and mixes this through the low latency mix engine. You'll use your Apple iOS device to control the mixer through two mobile apps - Master Fader (for iPad) and My Fader (for iPod touch/iPhone).

Onyx Mic Preamps: The Mackie DL1608 mixer features 16 studio-quality Onyx mic preamps that deliver depth, headroom and immense detail to your live mix. Plus, with a choice of XLR or combo mic/line input, connecting mics and instruments is quick and easy. Includes global phantom power for condenser mics. Each and every input channel features a choice of powerful plug-ins to dial in the perfect sound for whatever you've got plugged in. You can even link adjoining channels for fast control of stereo sources.

      • 4-band EQ includes low shelving, low-mid peaking, high-mid peaking and high-shelving
      • Compressor with all the control needed to reduce or limit transients
      • Gate perfect for reducing leakage from open mics
    • Vintage: Delivers the sought-after musical characteristics of your favorite industry-standard processors.
      • Vintage EQ with interacting bands and frequency-dependent Q structure for added clarity and sheen

Makie aligns its Onyx preamps precisely with the converters to provide you with the most headroom and the lowest noise and distortion possible; resulting in brilliant sound quality from a vocal whisper to a wailing guitar solo.

Outputs: There are plenty of 1/4" aux outputs available, each perfect for driving a monitor wedge. There's a pair of main outputs for your system and a dedicated headphone output for listening to soloed tracks or getting a close-up view of your mix. Each output on a DL Series mixer has its own processing perfect for dialing in an tuning the connected speaker or other device. Easily link aux sends into a combined stereo output, perfect for IEMs. Plus, you can delay the outputs for fill speakers, etc.

    • 31-Band EQ: 31-band GEQ includes the ability to draw in the curve and a 2x zoom control for ultra-precise control.
    • Compressor/Limiter: Compressor/limiter great for enhancing low end and protecting your speakers.
    • Delay: Up to 350ms alignment delay with variable temperature control.

Global Effects: DL Series mixers each feature a global reverb and delay that can be easily applied to any channel. A wide variety of reverbs and delays are available each with a high-level of control.

    • Reverbs: Nine separate reverbs are available, each with pre delay, damping, decay and roll-off controls.
    • Delays: Choose from mono, tape echo, stereo, ping-pong or multi-tap delay each with tap tempo, feedback and damping control.

Snapshot Recall: The DL1608 allows you to recall mix functions with just the touch of a finger. Easily save and access sound check settings for multiple bands, complex song mixes, and more. Save channel icons including pics of band members.  You can even preset the board and be ready to go the moment you arrive at your gig.

Mute Groups: There's four individual mute groups available from the quick access panel. Assign specific input and output channels to these mute groups for customizable control of channel muting.  It's great for muting all inputs during song breaks or for larger productions with rotating musicians, broadcast, House of Worship, or theatre production applications.
