We all want better TV sound. But some of us have a hard time figuring out where to put a sound bar or surround sound speakers. Speakercraft's CS3 offers a simple solution: put your speaker system under your TV. This 4-channel sound system with two built-in woofers is also a platform that can support flat-panel TVs weighing up to 160 pounds. Just place it on your TV stand, place your HDTV on top, and you can start actually hearing every word of dialogue and feeling the impact of every explosive sound effect.
The CS3 features two tweeters and four midrange drivers across its front panel. Those alone are enough to dramatically improve the sound of any TV. But when you add in the CS3's dual down-firing 5-1/4" woofers and ported enclosure, you get extended bass response necessary to drive home the low frequencies that give movie and TV soundtracks depth and power. You'll hear all kinds of things you never hear through your TV's puny speakers. Eighty watts of built-in amplification and digital signal processing deliver virtual surround sound that's engaging and immersive.
This sound system is not just for movies and TV. Built-in Bluetooth lets you enjoy wireless music with your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Play songs from your digital library, listen to free Internet radio streams or Pandora, and stream tunes from your favorite subscription service like Spotify® or Beats Music™.
A single cable from your TV to the CS3 gets you up and running in seconds. There are optical, coaxial, and RCA inputs, so it's compatible with just about any TV. The included remote control even lets you adjust bass and treble response, so you can fine-tune the sound of this powerful speaker system to your satisfaction.
Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.
I gave this to my girlfriend, because she was disappointed in the sound of her TV. (and who isn't?) She was shocked at the size of the cabinet until it was placed under the TV. Then she was surprised by how good it looked. Hookup and settings were easy, sound is a huge improvement over TV speakers. She uses the Bluetooth streaming for music regularly, and the clarity and range is nice from the back rooms of the house. Music sounds nice and movies are clearer and much more enjoyable.
Pros: Rich sound, solid build, quality components, ease of setup.
It's been over a month, and I'm so happy with this purchase. I didn't want to bunch of gear to just get better sound out of my flat panel TV. I wanted something simple and versatile. All my Christmas music sounded great over the holidays, and TV dialog is so much easier to understand. As others have said, the remote is pretty lame, but I added a Logitech Harmony remote for all my devices and it works beautifully. The speaker is just what I was looking for at a very affordable price. I've connected my cable box, DVD player, and AppleTV as well as play music via Bluetooth from my iPhone. The Bluetooth connection is actually easier than the manual describes.
Pros: Price, compact design, number of inputs
Very impressed with quality of construction (as other reviewers have mentioned). Still in the process of adjusting the settings. Small remote will not be an issue : adjustments visible when you take the front grille off; the rest is what you're hearing. Probably won't change settings once I am happy with them generally. Excellent technical support (helpful because I am not a technical person). The outstanding reviews by published technical experts led me to this speaker, and the purchase price was the clincher. Haven't used bluetooth yet; don't know if I ever will.
Pros: Ease of setup; solidity and appearance of case. Sounds fine, but still making adjustments.
Cons: none so far
This is used on the primary TV set for normal TV watching. A higher-end surround system is used for movies and music rich content. The biggest benefit is the simplicity of only having a TV, cable box and 1 speaker on. It's easy to use and sounds much nicer than the ZVOX 555 which we had for a short time.
Pros: Easy to Use, clear dialogue even at low volume levels, BT connectivity, quality for price
Cons: The remote is poor (ZVOX is nicer), the lack of a display, initial setup had some quick (but powering up a second time resolved the issue)
Got this delivered and it hooked up easily. Just had lots of issues right away. Will list in the Pros/Cons section.
Pros: Great Sound. Awesome bass. Easy to hook up.
Cons: Some blu ray discs play fine. Others, no sound. DVD's - tried around 10 of them, no sound at all. Cable box - would not connect thru the optical cable, had to hook up to the analog input. Sometimes I would turn on the TV and no sound. Had to change inputs and then change back to aux to get sound. Other times I had to turn everything off and try again. The unit was so finicky that after a few days I had to box it back up and send back. Also, the remote could not suck any worse.
I was presently surprised at how good the sound quality was. I purchased this particular one because I needed one I could set the flat screen TV on vice trying to use one of the bar-type ones.
Pros: Sound is very good and is a 200% improvement over the TV speakers.
Cons: The only downside is the small remote control and no visual display to show the levels.
Great unit. I used this product to replace the TV speaker system and wow, what a difference.
This TV speaker system works about like I expected. I feel the dialogue performance could be a little better but I have not used it enough yet to know if it is adjusted as good as can be. It has good bass and the improvement in sound over the TV speakers is very appearent
Pros: Good overall sound, magneticly attached grill and supports the TV
Cons: a little difficult to hear fine adjustments in my viewing room, may not be a proplem in a different setting
Flawed soundbase wins you over for the most part in spite of itself. Chintzy remote most annoying feature which seems like engineers' afterthought. Biggest catch: user left totally dependent on it due to lack of said control on soundbase itself! If you lose it, you're sunk. Miss a smart/uni-volume switch too & also would've appreciated more protection over speakers + woofers like metal grill but Speakercraft probably cut corners to keep price down. Anyway, internals rock solid to the ear - where it counts. If you can get past these distractions, it's a pretty robust slab that packs plenty o' punch for 80 watts. Make no mistake - this is a bass-y system w/two 5-inch woofers not for the faint-hearted. Good news is even at low volume, they make their presence known - but in a good way. Treble + voice clarity fine & dandy. Midrange smooth tonality - unlike Zvox! Overall, soundbase has enough self-confidence to handle most flicks & tunes w/out breaking a sweat - pleasantly recommended.
Pros: bass, clarity, midrange & overall performance.
Cons: remote, lack of smart volume control and more protection on speakers
Packaging was very well done and protective. Speaker took seconds to set up and sounds great. As stated in other reviews, TV sounds best in surround sound mode while music sounds best with the surround mode off. The remote isn't great, but it does everything needed.
Pros: Easy to set up Sounds great Great price
Cons: Remote Control
Great sound for dialogue clarity and music dynamics with rich bass.
I bought the speakercraft after listening to the Bose and Vizio speakerstands and reading and watching the video reviews of all of the units on sale, including the soon to be released Pioneer. I wanted quality construction and excellent sound. I placed the unit in my study/spare room under a Vizio 42" smart TV. Since my TV comes with analog audio out jacks, I used the supplied RCA cable and have not as of yet experimented with the fiberoptic cable. My two listening positions are about 3 feet and 7 feet on my sleep sofa.
The unit came with first class packaging, and it is very sold and hefty at about 25 pounds. The construction is 1st rate. After experimenting with the sound, I found I prefer the standard sound for all audio programs and on some movies. I had no problem with NETFLIX or Utube videos. The sound quality is excellent for the price; it is smooth, balanced and as neutral as you can get with a unit of this type. The bass is tight like an acoustic suspension speaker but deep and extended like a bass reflex cabinet without the boominess. Even with the simulated surround sound off, the unit has a good sound stage that extends beyond the cabinet. The surround feature boasts the upper mids and treble and greatly expands the sound stage. Overall, the sound quality is outstanding for the price. I found the much maligned remote to be better that some say, but it is small. Overall, I would buy this unit again without hesitation.
Pros: Sound quality, construction, design, looks. The lack of buttons on the front are a plus for people with small children in the house who like to touch every button they can reach. Rounded corners and sleek design will make it look good in any room. High quality users manual designed to last, just like the rest of the unit.
Cons: Remote is small but the detents for each increase or decrease increment are clearly felt. I'm learing to live with it and now don't mind it.
So just to start off the sound bar, when it comes to clarity, and depth sound fantastic. it comes with two settings, surround and regular for regular talk shows and such. The build quality is very good, and the system feels when you pick it up to place it has a weight of substance. it offers also two double barrel subwoofer, that shoot face down on the bottom of the unit itself. I can tell you that the diffrence between my tv speakers and this sound bar its like movie theatre sound, and home speaker sound. Its like night and day. This system would get a perfect five stars if it wasnt for the rinky remote control that the unit comes with. Its the onlly downside of this incredible speaker system. The remote sucks. Other than that, value is amazing. specially here on crutchfield. Don't think about it twice, just do it. You wont regret it.
Pros: Sound quality, is top notch. Subwoofer quality is well balanced as well. Build quality is instant the minute you handle the unit and place it. And its simple to set up, including the bluetooth for music.
Cons: No HDMI ? i know ... kinda lame, but you have Optical to make up for it. & The remote control is cheezy.
Overall a nice product that is easy to set up and works well. I had a 7.1 audio system for the TV art my last house, couldn't make it work aesthetically in my new house. Obviously the dedicated audio system is better, but this work s fine for music, movies, and sports.
Pros: - easy setup - nice volume and power - not an eyesore
Cons: - horrible remote - tough to tell what changes you make for example : surround sound - audio can be a little muddy when there is conversation in movies
We just purchased the Speakercraft CS3 system and we are really pleased. The Speakercraft replaces a Bose surround sound system we had and we have no regrets, great sound and GREAT price.
Pros: Great sound stout enough to support a TV and at a great price.
Cons: No cons
Nice more even sound then flat screen tv speakers
Pros: Volume seems more stable from show to commercials. Sound is full
Cons: The blue light and red light showing if om or off is very dim sometimes not visible
It is a good speaker for movies and music. I'm not a huge audiophile, but I can tell when the music has distortion and this speaker has crispy clear clarity. I'd have given 5 stars if it had a display on it.
A week after I bought this, my downstairs neighbor complained of the bass going through their ceiling. So keep this in mind if you have downstairs neighbors ;)
Pros: Nice Bass, Small Form Factor, Clear Music, Good surround sound, Bluetooth
Cons: No display, down firing subs?
I've had the CS3 for about a week and I'm overall very pleased. It sounds fantastic, looks great, and is solidly built. The Bluetooth functionality with my iPhone works really well. The only negatives are the lack of visual feedback when making changes with the remote (volume, etc) and the remote itself. It's a five star product otherwise.
Pros: Sound, looks, build quality, Bluetooth
Great sound! I have had the ZVOX 555, the JBL Cimemate SB400, and the Speakercraft CS3 all hooked up to my family room TV this week. I used to have a dedicated receiver, front and center channel speakers and subwoofer, but wanted a smaller footprint and a unit capable of producing clear dialogue for my wife to hear when watching movies. The CS3 is the easiest to setup and in m opinion really good sounds with only a few tweaks to the treble and bass. Both the JBL and the ZVOX can decode Dolby Digital, but not if the source is from a DirecTV Genie Client or ROKU 2. I had to turn Dolby Digital "OFF" on both to get decent sound without dropouts or chirps/pops. So even though the CS3 can't process anything other than a PCM Digital signal through the optical or digital coax, this did not effect my configuration. I personally think the CS3 has the most realistic sound reproduction. Vocals are not "tinny" and bass is not overwhelming.
Unlike the others, I will not be returning the Speakercraft CS3.
Pros: - Sound Quality - Easy of Hookup - Simple, but Quality Cabinet Construction
Cons: - No display to show what level treble or bass is at. Have to also try to listen to the output to determine whether or not the "surround" sound is on or off. - Cheap remote, but I'm using a Logitech Harmony 650, so no big deal.
Pleasantly surpised - great speaker system.
Pros: Good Sound, Good value, easy setup, pretty.
Cons: Heavy so not as portable as Id hoped but probably just leave it in one spot anyway.
If you are looking to avoid an invasion of speaker wires in your home then this home theater system fits the bill. It incorporates two 5 1/4 sub woofers to enhance the overall effect. Is it true surround sound?...not really, but it is better than I expected. I can't say the same about the remote, however. Credit card size and there are no displays for sound adjustments.
Pros: quality sound at all volume levels.
Cons: The remote
Very good sound and looks great, but the remote is small and hard to use in dim light. Can't use the TV's remote to control the sound level, like some other units.
Pros: Good Sound
Cons: Must use remote, Hard to use remote
Great piece of equipment, looks good under tv sound is perfect, nice job speakercraft
Pros: Good base actually raises the tv higher and provides better viewing
Absolutely blown away. The depth and quality of sound from such a small package is quite something. I have it in a large room and it still does a good job. It is by no means a substitute for a complete system, but it does afford a nice experience for those with space constraints.
Pros: Sound, space,
Cons: Remote range, hard to tell when making adjustments by the visual blue light.

Active Soundbar Speaker Base: The SpeakerCraft CS3 is an under-the-TV soundbar solution that dramatically improves your audio/video experience when watching your flat-panel TV. The CS3 soundbar speaker is designed to sit on an A/V stand with a flat-panel TV sitting on top of it. Your television's pedestal base should be no more than 28" (w) x 15.5625" (d). The soundbar speaker base system connects to your television via a single analog (RCA) or digital (optical/coaxial) cable.
Stereo & Simulated Surround: The SpeakerCraft CS3 provides full stereo sound for music soundtracks. The CS3 uses advanced digital signal processing (DSP) to create simulated surround sound that spreads the soundstage coming from the soundbar speaker so ambient sounds of movie soundtracks appear to come from all over the room and not just from the speaker.
3-Way Speaker Design: The SpeakerCraft CS3 features two front-firing 1" silk dome tweeters, four front-firing 3" treated paper cone midrange drivers, and two down-firing 5.25" treated paper cone subwoofers for clear highs, detailed midrange, and deep bass response.
80W Digital Amplifier: The SpeakerCraft CS3 soundbar speaker employs an 80W digital amplifier to power all eight drivers for dynamic, room-filling sound.
Bass Reflex Enclosure: The SpeakerCraft CS3 features a bass-reflex enclosure with dual rear-firing and dual front-firing ports for greater efficiency and bigger bass.
Bass & Treble Control: You can adjust the soundbar speaker's bass (100Hz) & treble (10kHz) level in order to increase or decrease low and high frequency output.
Analog + Digital Inputs: The SpeakerCraft CS3 is fitted with both analog and digital inputs to connect your external AV components. There is one optical (toslink) and one coaxial (RCA) digital input to connect up to two digital audio sources, such as your flat-panel HDTV and Blu-ray player. The digital inputs will accept PCM (2ch) only. There is also one analog stereo RCA input for connecting an external audio device or TV without a digital output.
Note: The soundbar speaker's digital inputs do not support a Dolby Digital/DTS audio signal.
Bluetooth Audio Streaming: Pair your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to the CS3 and stream music wirelessly via built-in Bluetooth (v.2.1) technology. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled devices to the SpeakerCraft soundbar speaker. You'll still use your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device for music navigation and song/artist information. Pairing is done without the need to enter a pin-code.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the SpeakerCraft soundbar speaker system.
Remote Control: The CS3 includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar speaker system.

So far I like the sound I get from the CS3. My biggest complaint is the remote control -- terrible design. Too small, can't tell if the volume is going up or down visually. [ Jody Dec 13, 2014 ]
I purchase the CS3, and never put much thought into the Zvox. I have a smaller family room (about 15'x15'). The CS3 has made me very happy. It is not surround sound but has a great movie sound, much better than standard tv sound. Surprisingly good bass. great for music and movies. I'll suggest the CS3 all day long. [ Jon Nov 04, 2014 ]
I have had sound systems from Bose, Polk, Pioneer, Onkyo and Yamaha for my living room. The best sound I have ever accomplished is through the use of the Speakercraft CS3 in my son's bedroom. Simply the best surround sound I have experienced! [ JULIE Nov 04, 2014 ]
Michael: I like my Speakercraft CS3. I feel it was very good quality for the money [ Richard Nov 04, 2014 ]
Yes there is a master power switch and as long as it is turned on, it should power up accordingly [ SCOTT Oct 15, 2014 ]
I tested mine this morning. When I cycled the power back on the unit remained off. So you'd have to turn the unit on using the remote. The settings that it was at remained the same after the power was restored. I'd buy the CS3 again but it has some lack of features that some may not like. There is no indication of volume or settings. Just a red/blue LED light as off/on indication. We went with a Harmony 650 universal remote that makes using all of the 'stuff' a lot easier. Hope this helps. [ ROY Oct 10, 2014 ]
Apologises, but I won't be where that equipment is for another 2 weeks. [ JOHN Oct 10, 2014 ]
Sorry, can't help. I originally ordered Speakercraft CS3 but exchanged it for a ZVox 580. [ GARY Oct 10, 2014 ]
There wasn't one with mine. [ RYAN Mar 18, 2014 ]
Yes you do not have to purchase a separate unit. The sc3 comes with an optical cable as well. Unit works good but no inidcation of sound level bass and treble contols kindnof stinks. Remote is lame as well small enough to be lost. We're not TV people but we often struggle with dialogue and heart--stopping sound effects. Getting a good balance isn't easy and nobody wants to play with the remote during movie. Overall I'd get it again. Simple to use has Bluetooth and if you're listening to music it sounds pretty decent Hope this was helpful. [ ROY Mar 18, 2014 ]
I just received mine and there was no such box included. [ JOSEPH Mar 17, 2014 ]
there is no decoder box [ HUGH Mar 17, 2014 ]
Setup is as simple as any audio-only soundbar. You just connect power, and then connect your input of choice: optical or co-ax digital, analog RCA, or paired via BlueTooth. Once paired, the CS3 can only be paired with one device at a time. A word on the digital audio inputs: It's worth noting, that the enclosure does not have any Dolby Digital decoding onboard. the optical and co-ax input will only play back linear-PCM signals. If your source component does not convert Dolby and DTS encoded signals to linear PCM, you'll need a separate converter device, or you'll need to just use the analog inputs. [ SALIYM Mar 17, 2014 ]
I'm not a big fan of soundbars, but they work. I've got a 400w cerwin vega sub crankin' in my living room. Good for smaller rooms, not really loud. [ DANIEL M Mar 04, 2014 ]
