About the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8

David Brown

Pro-quality recording, at home or on the road

Focusrite's Scarlett 18i8 gives you the extensive connectivity you need to record multiple performers at once in a compact, desktop chassis you can easily take from your place to the rehearsal space to the recording studio. Connect it to your desktop or laptop computer, or plug into your iPad® using the Apple® Camera Connection Kit (not included). Then, plug in your instruments and microphones and start laying down tracks. Run balanced 1/4" cables out to your studio monitors, or use the two independent headphone outputs for discrete monitoring for performers. The Scarlett 18i8 is great for creating simple demos to share new compositions with bandmates or producing professional sounding recordings to distribute to friends and fans.

Four combination mic preamps

On the Scarlett 18i8's front-panel, there are four Neutrik Combo® inputs. Each can accept XLR cables from dynamic or condenser microphones, and 1/4" line-level signals from drum machines and keyboards. Inputs 1 and 2 can be switched to a high-Z instrument input, for direct connection of an electric guitar or bass. All four preamps use a high-quality, low-noise Focusrite design, offering clean sound with plenty of dynamic punch. There are four additional 1/4" TRS inputs on the rear panel, as well as MIDI, S/PDIF, and optical digital inputs, for expanded versatility to record small combos.

Worried you may need more mic preamps down the road? The optical digital input can accept an eight-channel ADAT stream from an external device like a mic preamp console with an ADAT output. This connection lets you take full advantage of this interface's impressive 18-channel input capability, so you can mike an entire band, from vocals and guitars, to keyboards and drum kits.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 USB recording interface

The Scarlett 18i8 offers versatile connectivity in a compact chassis.

Powerful mixing software for direct monitoring

Scarlett MixControl is a high-powered software mixer which offers lots of possibilities. You can create up to eight mono or four stereo mixes from any combination of the interface's 18 input channels or eight outputs from your DAW. This ensures everyone is satisfied with their monitor mix, so they can deliver a rock-solid performance. MixControl also allows musicians to monitor without latency as the input signals can be sent to the headphone outputs or other external monitoring stations before going to your computer.

Scarlett MixControl's interface mimics a real mixing board, with virtual faders along with input level meters, stereo pan, mute, and solo controls. An intuitive routing window lets you easily see and select which signals are routed to which outputs. You can even store a preset mixer configuration in the interface, so you can use it as a stand-alone mixer on stage — perfect for piano players who want to control the mix for a multiple-keyboard setup.

Includes Ableton Live Lite recording software and plug-ins

If you don't already own recording software, the Scarlett 18i8 comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite, which offers all you need to start making recordings right out of the box. Also included are the Scarlett Plug-in Suite — with EQ, compression, gating, and reverb effects — and Novation Bass Station, a software version of the classic Novation analogue synth used in electronic music. There's also a sample library of loops to help you get started making music on your own.
