About the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4
Versatile, road-ready recording
Versatile, road-ready recording
If you're a part-time solo music producer, band member, and DJ, Focusrite has an excellent interface for all your different roles. The Scarlett 2i4 USB recording interface lets you use your PC or Mac® to create your own avante-garde electronic music, record your rock band's latest creation, and keep people dancing as you DJ your cousin's wedding. This interface is durable and compact, making it easy to take to your next gig, rehearsal, or recording session. Plug in mics, guitars, keyboards, and drum machines to capture any instrument you can think of. It comes with Ableton Live Lite recording software, or you can use your own to create high-resolution recordings that sound polished and professional.
Two combination mic preamps
The Scarlett 2i4 features two front-panel Neutrik Combo® inputs. Each can accept balanced XLR or TRS connections from microphones and line-level signals. Press the 48-volt button to enable phantom power for condenser mics. There's also a 10dB pad button for hot signals. Flip the switch to "instrument" to plug in electric guitars and basses directly. High-quality, low-noise Focusrite preamps offer clean sound with plenty of dynamic punch. Four 1/4" rear-panel outputs let you send signals out to studio monitors or external mixers.
DJ-ready
In addition the rear-panel 1/4" outputs, there are two pairs of stereo RCA outputs. These are designed so DJs can connect this interface to their own DJ mixers. This lets you output separate signals from DJ mixing software so you can perform crossfades to blend songs together and keep the party going.
The Scarlett 2i4 offers flexible connectivity for recording live instruments and working with DJ software and mixers.
Direct monitoring for ultra-low latency
Anyone who has recorded music with a computer has likely bumped into latency problems. That's why the Scarlett 2i4 offers direct monitoring. Turn the front-panel fader all the way to the left, and input signals are routed to your monitors before being sent to your computer, thus eliminating the delay sometimes caused by bogged-down computer processors. Adjust the fader to dial in your ideal mix of input and computer-returned signals to add effects from your DAW.
Includes Ableton Live Lite recording software and plug-ins
If you don't already own recording software, the Scarlett 2i4 comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite, which offers all you need to start making recordings right out of the box. Also included are the Scarlett Plug-in Suite — with EQ, compression, gating, and reverb effects — and Novation Bass Station, a software version of the classic Novation analogue synth used in electronic music. There's also a sample library of loops to help you get started making music on your own.

More details on the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4
Product Research
Features
Overview: The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is a 2-in/2-out USB recording interface, housed in a red anodized aluminum chassis. It allows you to record onto a Windows or Macintosh computer. The Scarlett 2i4 is recommended for soloists, duets, DJs, or stereo recording. It has 2 analog inputs, 2 balanced and 4 unbalanced outputs, 5-pin DIN MIDI in/outs, and a headphone output with volume control. The unit is powered through the USB bus--no separate power supply is required. The 2i4 comes with a USB cable and free software via download.
Mic Preamps: The Scarlet 2i4 features two high-quality Focusrite mic preamps with Neutrik combo connectors that accept either XLR or 1/4" plugs. The rotary input level controls have unique gain "halo" indicators that change color to let you know if you have a good signal (green), borderline clipping (amber), or clipping (red). The award-winning Focusrite microphone preamps feature plenty of headroom and 48V phantom power, if needed.
Line Inputs: The front panel Neutrik combo connectors can be used to connect line-level devices via XLR or 1/4" plugs. The line inputs will accept balanced or unbalanced plugs.
Instrument Inputs: The front panel inputs can be used for connecting an instrument, such as a guitar. They will accept TRS (balanced) or TS (unbalanced) plugs. When you set the front panel inputs as instrument inputs by toggling the Line/Inst switch to "Inst", the impedances are altered (relative to line), and the contacts are optimized for connecting the instrument.
10dB Pad: A 10dB pad may be inserted in each of the input signal paths, controlled by independent "Pad" buttons. The pad increases the headroom of the input stage and is used to reduce the input signals that are "too hot." The red "Pad" LED indicator glows when the pad is selected.
MIDI Ins/Outs: Two standard 5-pin DIN sockets are provided for connecting external MIDI equipment. The Scarlett 2i4 serves as a Break-out / Break-in Box or Hub for routing MIDI data in and out of your computer, for distribution to other MIDI devices. When MIDI data is received at the MIDI IN port, the green "MIDI" LED will illuminate.
Outputs: The Scarlett 2i4 has two 1/4" TRS balanced outputs and 4 RCA unbalanced outputs. The 4 output channels can be connected to an amplifier and speakers, powered monitors, headphones, DJ or other types of mixer, or any other analog audio equipment you want to use.
Direct Monitor: Direct Monitoring allows you to hear the output of the 2i4 without having to go through your computer (with possible latency effects). A front panel rotary control lets you control the balance between the input signal and the DAW playback. A Stereo/Mono switch lets you choose whether the inputs are summed to mono for monitoring.
Headphone Output: The 1/4" headphone output features a separate volume control and a source switch. You can choose whether the headphone is monitoring Outputs 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. Outputs 3 and 4 can be stereo or mono, as modified by the Stereo/Mono switch.
Computer Interface: The Scarlett 2i4 connects to your Windows or Macintosh computer via high-speed USB 2.0 (cable included). The signals are routed to the audio recording software at up to 24-bit 96kHz resolution. The Scarlett 2i4 is compatible with Windows 7 (all versions), Windows 8 (all versions except RT), and Mac OS X 10.8, or later.
Included Software: Included with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 is Scarlett MixControl software, a powerful music production tool for recording and mixing. Scarlett plug-ins give you additional tools for enhancing your recordings. The Novation Bass Station is a software synthesizer that lets you add bass or melody sounds to your music. A sample pack of drum loops and sound effects from Loopmasters is also included. All of the software is available free via download.
