About the Focusrite Scarlett 6i6

David Brown

Turn song ideas into completed songs

Record music by yourself or with bandmates with the Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. It may look small, but it's a powerful six-input, six-output recording interface for your PC, Mac®, or iPad® (requires Camera Connection Kit, not included, for iPad use). There are inputs for microphones, guitars, basses, keyboards, and drum machines. It works with digital recording software you already own, or you can record with the included Ableton Live Lite digital audio workstation (DAW). It also includes mixing software for monitoring using powered speakers or headphones, with virtually no latency. High-resolution A/D and D/A conversion ensures your recordings sound professional and polished. And the compact chassis means you can take it along with your laptop to record away from your home studio.

Two combination mic preamps

On the Scarlett 6i6's front-panel, there are two Neutrik Combo® inputs. Each can accept XLR cables from dynamic or condenser microphones, direct connections from electric guitars and basses, and 1/4" line-level signals from drum machines and keyboards. Both inputs feature high-quality, low-noise Focusrite preamps, offering clean sound with plenty of dynamic punch. There are two additional 1/4" TRS inputs on the rear panel, as well as MIDI and S/PDIF digital inputs, for expanded versatility.

Powerful mixing software for direct monitoring

Anyone who has recorded music with a computer has likely bumped into latency problems. That's why the Scarlett 6i6 includes mixing software. Scarlett MixControl lets you monitor your recordings from two independent headphone outputs with virtually no latency. Input signals can be routed to the monitors before being sent to your computer, thus eliminating the delay sometimes caused by bogged-down computer processors. The MixControl software also offers easy routing for all you input and output signals, as well as triggers for interface features like switching the front-panel inputs from mic/line to instrument and applying a 10dB pad.

Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 USB recording interface

The Scarlett 6i6 offers two high-quality Focusrite mic preamps and two independent headphone outputs.

Scarlett MixControl's interface mimics a real mixing board, with virtual faders along with input level meters, stereo pan, mute, and solo controls. An intuitive routing window lets you easily see and select which signals are routed to which outputs. You can even store a preset mixer configuration in the interface, so you can use it as a stand-alone mixer on stage — perfect for piano players who want to control the mix for a multiple-keyboard setup.

Includes Ableton Live Lite recording software and plug-ins

If you don't already own recording software, the Scarlett 6i6 comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite, which offers all you need to start making recordings right out of the box. Also included are the Scarlett Plug-in Suite — with EQ, compression, gating, and reverb effects — and Novation Bass Station, a software version of the classic Novation analogue synth used in electronic music. There's also a sample library of loops to help you get started making music on your own.

Features
Specifications

Features

Overview: The Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 is a 6-in/6-out USB recording interface, housed in a red anodized aluminum chassis. It allows you to record onto a Windows or Macintosh computer or iPad. The Scarlett 6i6 is recommended for small bands or recording artists. It has both analog and digital inputs, four balanced outputs, and dual headphone outputs with independent volume controls. The 6i6 comes with a USB cable and power supply, plus free software via download.

Mic Preamps: The Scarlet 6i6 features two high-quality Focusrite mic preamps with Neutrik combo connectors that accept either XLR or 1/4" plugs. The rotary input level controls have unique gain "halo" indicators that change color to let you know if you have a good signal (green), borderline clipping (amber), or clipping (red). The award-winning Focusrite microphone preamps feature plenty of headroom and 48V phantom power, if needed.

Line Inputs: The front panel Neutrik combo connectors can be used to connect line-level devices via XLR or 1/4" plugs. In addition, two 1/4" TRS line input jacks are provided on the rear panel. The line inputs will accept balanced or unbalanced plugs.

Instrument Inputs: The front panel inputs can be used for connecting an instrument, such as a guitar. They will accept TRS (balanced) or TS (unbalanced) plugs. You must configure the front panel inputs (1&2) as instrument input via the Scarlett MixControl software. The green "Inst" LED illuminates, the impedances are altered (relative to line), and the contacts are optimized for connecting the instrument.

10dB Pad: A 10dB pad may be inserted in each of the input signal paths, controlled by Scarlett MixControl software. The pad increases the headroom of the input stage and is used to reduce the mic or line level signals that are "too hot." The pad is not designed for use with instrument input signals. The red "Pad" LED indicator glows when the pad is selected.

Digital Ins/Outs: The Scarlett 6i6 is equipped with S/PDIF (RCA coaxial) digital inputs and outputs on the rear panel. This allows you to input two-channel digital audio signals into the interface, or output a digital signal to a digital recording device. These two channels are considered as Inputs and Outputs 5 and 6 to and from the unit, and the signals can be routed in the MixControl software.

MIDI Ins/Outs: Two standard 5-pin DIN sockets are provided for connecting external MIDI equipment. The Scarlett 6i6 serves as a Break-out / Break-in Box or Hub for routing MIDI data in and out of your computer, for distribution to other MIDI devices. When MIDI data is received at the MIDI IN port, the green "MIDI" LED will illuminate.

Computer Interface: The Scarlett 6i6 connects to your Windows or Macintosh computer via high-speed USB 2.0 (cable included). The signals are routed to the audio recording software at up to 24-bit 96kHz resolution. The Scarlett 6i6 is compatible with Windows 7 (all versions), Windows 8 (all versions except RT), and Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8, or later. Connection to an iPad, or other iOS device, requires an Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (sold separately).

Included Software: Included with the Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 is Scarlett MixControl software, a powerful music production tool for recording and mixing. Scarlett plug-ins give you additional tools for enhancing your recordings. The Novation Bass Station is a software synthesizer that lets you add bass or melody sounds to your music. A sample pack of drum loops and sound effects from Loopmasters is also included. All of the software is available free via download.
