Flexible options for enjoying music throughout your home

The amp.1640 can distribute music from one audio source, such as a networked music streamer, to multiple rooms in your home. Or you can connect additional sources directly to the individual amplifier channels and assign each one to a single listening room. Each channel pair features its own separate level control so you can easily adjust the volume to fine-tune the sound of your system. Enjoy clear stereo sound in up to eight rooms, or combine two channels into one to give your speakers more juice — a great option for power-hungry outdoor speakers.

Claire Controls Amp

Written by: Terry from Portola Valley, CA on April 27, 2016

The Claire Controls Amp is the awesome. I discovered in a solutions article on Crutchfield.com when exploring options to convert my whole house audio system from HTD Amps, controller and keypads to Sonos based system. I already had a few Sonos Connects as audio sources, but needed an amp that would be triggered to turn on by the audio inputs to drive the various rooms in my house. Claire Controls Amp did the trick nicely in a low profile, low entertainment consumption manner. I've even integrated an Echo Dot to control the audio in my office and there is zero lag in the triggered audio. I'm delighted by the amp and super happy the Crutchfield's solutions article led me right to it.

Pros: Low profile Low energy consumption Lots of channels Individual or grouped inputs Instantaneous audio triggering Simplicity embodied... Just performs its specific function very well

Cons: The documentation was pretty weak regarding the dip switches for bridging or group vs individual audio input

Features

Overview: The Clare Controls Amp.1640 incorporates eight matched two-channel Class D amplifiers which combine to deliver eight zones of clean audio performance for distribution of music throughout your home or office.

16-Channel Class D Amp: The Amp.1640 uses Class D amplifier technology which runs cooler and is more efficient (>90%) than traditional Class A/B amps. The Clare Controls Amp.1640 amplifier is rated at 40 watts x 16 channels in 8 or 80 watts x 16 channels in 4.

Bridgeable: The power output of adjacent amplifier channels can be combined to provide extra power when needed in certain locations & applications. This is easily accomplished by flipping a single DIP switch on the amplifier's rear-panel. Bridged power rating of the amplifier is 160 watts (8 only).

Two Independent Feedback Loops: The use of two independent feedback loops allow the Amp.1640 to provide lower distortion, less noise on output, a frequency response less dependent on load, and lower output impedance than other Class D amps. The result is a natural, relaxed and dynamic sound with excellent stereo perspective and a tightly controlled precise bass that will do justice to all your music sources.

8 Zone Inputs w/ Gain Control: The Amp.1640 features eight stereo RCA inputs to connect up to eight different audio sources. Each pair of channel inputs has its own gain adjustment.

Global Switching: The Global input (stereo RCA) allows output of the same stereo audio source to be amplified across all channels of the amplifier which are set to "Global" for easy multi-room applications. You can use the Global gain to control the maximum output for all Global channels at once. The Global output (stereo RCA) allows the Global input of the amplifier to be sent to another amplifier in your system.

Speaker Terminals: Each speaker connection features a removable Phoenix-style connector that accommodates 18 to 14-gauge stranded speaker wire.

Trigger Input: The amplifier can be triggered to turn-on via the 12VDC trigger input (3.5mm) on the rear of the amplifier. This allows the amp to remain in Standby mode until it is required for used, thereby greatly reducing overall power consumption.

Protection Circuits: The Amp.1604 implements a total of nine independent protection circuits, monitoring the temperature, current and voltage of several different functional blocks, assuring uninterrupted music until maximum limits are reached.

Switched-Mode Power Supply:  Using technologies designed by ICEpower, a subsidiary of Bang & Olufsen, the Amp.1640 uses an advanced switched-mode power supply that consumes less than 0.2W in standby.

Rack-Mountable: The Amp.1640 comes with a pair of rack ears and hardware to mount the 16-channel amplifier in your rack system. The Amp.1640 takes up 1U space.
