Get a better-looking picture — instantly

Here's a way to improve your system's picture quality wihout investing in a new TV. The Darbee Darblet DVP 5000 video processor applies powerful video processing to enhance the detail and depth of any video source, whether it's high-definition Blu-ray or standard-def cable or satellite TV signals. And although its design is highly advanced, the DVP 5000 is very easy to hook up and use.

This is the smallest video processor we've ever seen — about the size of a chubby smartphone. Connections are simple: one HDMI input and one HDMI output, plus a power jack for the AC wall wart. Just connect an HDMI cable between your video source and the DVP 5000's input, and another HDMI cable between the DVP 5000's output and your TV or projector. If you use an A/V receiver in your system, you can use the DVP 5000 to enhance all the video sources connected to your receiver by inserting this processor between the receiver's HDMI output and your display.

Most TVs and Blu-ray players come with their own picture controls, labeled "sharpness" or "detail", but those controls are crude and low-tech compared to the DarbeeVision Visual Presence technology found in the DVP 5000. This custom algorithm analyzes images, detecting areas with dark/light transitions, then increases contrast between lighter and darker details within the image to emphasize fine details and create an enhanced sense of visual depth. This powerfully precise approach enables the DVP 5000 to enhance image quality without adding noise or "halos," or altering overall color, contrast, or black level. The effect is adjustable, and there's a split-screen demo mode for easy before/after comparisons, so you can dial in exactly the level of visible improvement you desire.

The DVP 5000 has four small front-panel buttons to navigate menus and make image adjustments, and it also comes with a credit card-style remote for tweaking the image from the comfort of your couch. Darbee's processing is so effective that Oppo, builder of extremely high-performance Blu-ray players, created a "Darbee Edition" of their flagship BDP-105 player. That's pretty high praise in our book.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been running the Darbee for the last couple of weeks in my home theater set-up along with my Oppo BDP-103 and BenQ W1070. I couldn't be more pleased with the added level of detail that this processor brings to the big screen. There's a new level of detail and depth to the picture that didn't exist before. I think I'll hold off on 4K just a little while longer.

Pros: Performs as claimed, Plug n' Play set-up, noticeably enhances the picture quality on blu-ray and up-scaled DVD content, easily controlled by Harmony remote.

Cons: Not the most aesthetic piece of equipment, remote is cheaply made, anything over 70% adds noise to the picture.

As good as the reviews

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works great at lifting the haze from a picture. Detail is enhanced and very noticeable in blades of grass on hair. As far as I can tell it does not add any unwanted ringing or edge enhancement. This is a fantastic little device which has dropped to a better price point. I have mine set at 50 for Directv and Off the Air signals which works well. I have not yet tried Blu-Ray.

Pros: Detail enhancement without adding noise. Works well with Higher quality sources.

Cons: The case, remote,,and wall wart are cheap looking. For the price, even where it is now, I would expect better materials. None of this affects what it does, however, .

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a great Samsung 55" LED TV but was tempted to go for a new 4K model even though there is not a lot of content out there. So I decided to keep my Samsung and upgrade the picture with the Darbee Darblet DVP 5000. I can definitely notice the upgraded picture and I am happy with the product but when 4K becomes more prevalent, I may still upgrade.

Pros: Ease of connection and features of product

Cons: None so far

Product Research

HDMI Video Processor: The Darbee Darblet DVP 5000 is an external HDMI video processor which significantly increases clarity and depth of standard- and high-definition video signals through Darbee Visual Presence (DVP) technology.

Darbee Visual Presence (DVP): Darbee Visual Presence (DVP) technology creates a video image with enhanced visual fidelity. You can choose between three DVP viewing modes.

  • Hi Def: Select this mode for highest fidelity sources and cleanest image processing.
  • Gaming: Choose this mode for video games and CGI sources; adds more depth and detail.
  • Full Pop: Adds the strongest depth cues for all sources, especially low-resolution or low-quality sources.
Note: You can adjust the level of each DVP mode from 0 to 120. A level 0 bypasses DVP video processing.

HDMI 1.4: The Darblet DVP 5000 is fitted with one HDMI input and one HDMI output. Both HDMI jacks are version 1.4 and support up to 1080p video, plus 3D video. Simply plug your HDMI source (such as your Blu-ray player) into the Darblet DVP 5000's HDMI input jack and connect the DVP 5000's HDMI output jack to your TV or display monitor.

Note:Compatible with 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video signals.

IR Remote: The DVP 5000 includes an IR remote for wireless operation of the HDMI video processor. There are also push button controls located on the front-panel of the unit.

External AC Power Supply: The Darbee Darblet DVP 5000 operates off of standard house hold current using the included external AC power adapter (Input: 100-240V; Output: 5V/1000mA).

Future Upgrades: Darbee is continuing to develop improvements to the Darbee Visual Presence algorithm. Check their website,, for upgrade announcements. The Darblet DVP 5000 is upgradeable after purchase, although you will have to send it in to receive new firmware, and there may be a processing charge.
