About the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H8

Style counts

Those of us at Crutchfield who are geeks about sound quality sometimes give short shrift to what headphones look like. That's not going to happen here. The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H8 headphones are cool. Very cool. Just look at 'em — they stand out enough to turn heads without looking ostentatious. Think how cool you're going to look walking on the plane with these. Oh, you'll wear them on the plane — they've got noise cancellation circuitry to minimize distractions like airplane hum and pretentious business-class banter. You're also going to look cool listening to them without a cord — they're Bluetooth compatible for connecting wirelessly to your phone. I know what you're thinking: all style, no substance? Wrong. They sound great, offering up rock-solid bass and sparkling detail.

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H8 headphones

Built-in noise-canceling circuitry and Bluetooth make the Beoplay H8 headphones (shown in Gray Hazel) excellent for listening on the go.

Control music and calls with a mere touch of your finger

The coolest aspect of the H8 headphones has to be the aluminum touch panel. It allows you to control music and calls with just the tap or swipe of a finger. Slide your finger forward across the panel to skip a track. Move it in a circular motion forward as if you were controlling a dial to increase the volume. Got a call coming in on your phone? Tap the panel to answer — the built-in microphone on the headphones ensures clear call quality. You can even turn noise cancellation on and off with the touch panel.

Well-built for comfort and looks

A great pair of headphones should feel comfortable and inviting, both in your hands and on your ears. How do the H8 headphones achieve this? Memory foam earpads that are covered with soft lambskin offer a plush on-ear fit. The cowhide leather headband is both durable and stylish, while its interior is softly padded for long-lasting comfort. The aluminum frame lends durability to these headphones without weighing them down — they're as lightweight as any headphones with both Bluetooth and noise cancellation that we've seen.

Long battery life, with wired listening if you need it

The H8 headphones are powered by a rechargeable battery — it's replaceable should it ever stop taking a charge. Recharging is easy using the included USB cable. A full charge offers up to 14 hours of use with both Bluetooth and noise-cancellation activated. Plug in the included headphone cable and increase your battery life to 35 hours with only noise cancellation activated. Turn that off too, and you won't use any power at all, just in case you want to stay aware of your surroundings or conserve the battery.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H8 is an elegant on-ear wireless headphone with high-performance sound. These Jakob Wagner-designed headphones feature genuine lambskin-covered memory foam ear pads, a high quality cow leather-covered head band, and polished anodized aluminum construction. The H8s have technically advanced features such as Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), dynamic 40mm drivers, and on-board touch controls for your music and phone calls. The headphones come with a 4' audio cable with airline adapter, a Micro USB charging cable, and a plush soft storage pouch.

Drivers: The BeoPlay H8 is equipped with custom 40mm drivers with strong Neodymium magnets for a full and rich musical performance.

Bluetooth: Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, the H8 lets you roam freely while listening to your favorite tunes. The aptX codec lets you enjoy your music wirelessly without losing fidelity. The headphones are compatible with the following profiles: Headset Profile (HSP), Hands Free Profile (HFP), Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). The H8 has a wireless range of about 30 feet.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): The BeoPlay H8 on-ear headphones feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to reduce ambient noise, so all you hear is your music or phone call. External noise, picked up by microphones on each ear cup, is cancelled by inverted sound waves reintroduced into the headphones. You can also use the ANC by itself to simply shut out external noises. Active Noise Cancellation can be used easily turned on or off with the touch controls when you're listening wirelessly, or with the on/off switch when you're plugged in.

Rechargeable Battery: The Bluetooth and ANC features are powered by an 800mA Lithium-ion rechargeable battery. The battery charges in about 3 hours via the supplied Micro USB cable. A fully charged battery gives you enough power Active Noise Cancellation for up to 35 hours, Bluetooth for up to 16 hours, or ANC and Bluetooth for up to 14 hours.

Cable: The BeoPlay H8 features a 48" cable with 3.5mm plugs at each end that allows you to use the headphones when the battery becomes exhausted, or Bluetooth cannot be used. The ANC feature can be used when connected via the cable, however, the touch controls do not operate.
