Features

Overview: The Leica C compact digital camera combines elegance and performance into an affordable package. The camera has a fast Leica 7.1x zoom lens and a large 1/1.7" image sensor for impressive pictures throughout the zoom range. The built-in Wi-Fi capability lets you easily transfer your pictures directly to a smartphone or tablet. The Leica C comes with a handy wrist strap and a rechargeable battery.

Lens: The Leica C has a fast Leica DC Vario-Summicron F2.0-5.9, 7.1x zoom lens with a focal length of 6.0 to 42.8mm. This is equivalent to a focal length of 28-200mm in 35mm photography. In addition to the optical zoom, the camera has a 4x digital zoom. To prevent blurred images from camera shake, the Leica C has an optical image stabilization system.

Image Sensor: The Leica C is equipped with a large 1/1.7" MOS sensor with 12,800,000 total pixels and 12,100,000 effective pixels.

Monitor/Viewfinder: The camera has a 3.0" TFT-LCD monitor with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 921,600 dots. The monitor offers approximately 100% picture coverage. In addition to the monitor, the Leica C has an electronic color viewfinder with approximately 200,000 dots. A built-diopter allows you to adjust the viewfinder for your personal eyesight.

Battery: The camera is powered by the Leica BP-DC14 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (3.7 Volts, 950 mAh, 3.6Wh). The battery charges in the camera via the supplied USB cable, using the supplied AC adapter, or a USB port on your computer. Charging time is approximately 160 minutes. A fully charged battery will provide enough power for approximately 250 still pictures, or approximately 125 minutes of shooting time. When recording movies, the battery can record for approximately 70-80 minutes continuously, or 30-35 minutes typically (starting and stopping and zooming).

Flash: The camera has a built-in flash with a range of 2' to 23' with the zoom at maximum wide angle, and 2' to 7' at maximum telephoto. The flash can be set to the following modes:

  • Auto: The flash fires when subject is poorly lit.
  • Auto/Red Eye: A pre-flash is fired just before the main flash to reduce the presence of red-eye in photos.
  • Forced Flash: The flash fires every time a photo is taken.
  • Slow Sync/Red Eye: Combines flash with slow shutter for brighter pictures. Pre-flash fires to reduce red-eye.
  • Flash Off: Flash does not fire, regardless of lighting.

Recording Media: The Leica C records still images and movies onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards up to 64 GB. Memory cards with an SD Speed Class 4 or higher are recommended for recording motion pictures. The camera also has a built-in memory of approximately 87MB. You can copy pictures between an SD card and the internal memory, if desired.

Still Images: Still images can be recorded in 5 sizes in 4 different aspect ratios: 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1. Recording Quality can be set to Fine, Standard, RAW, RAW+Fine, RAW+Standard, 3D+Fine, and 3D+Standard. The number of pixels can be set to the following:

4:3 3:2 16:9 1:1
12M: 4000 x 3000 10.5M: 4000 x 2672 9M: 4000 x 2248 9M: 2992 x 2992
8M: 3264 x 2448 7M: 3264 x 2176 6M: 3264 x 1840 6M: 2448 x 2448
5M: 2560 x 1920 4.5M 2560 x 1712 3.5M: 2560 x 1440 3.5M: 1920 x 1080
3M: 2048 x 1536 2.5M: 2048 x 1360 2M: 1920 x 1080 2.5M: 1536 x 1536
0.3M: 640 x 480 0.3M: 640 x 424 0.2M: 640 x 360 0.2M: 480 x 480

Movies: Movies can be recorded in AVCHD format, which is suitable for playback on high-definition TVs. Image sizes include Full HD 1920 x 1080 (60i) and HD 1280 x 720 (60p) with a bit rate of approximately 17 Mbps. You can also record in the MP4 format for playing back on a computer in Full HD 1920 x 1080 (30p) @ 20 Mbps, HD 1280 x 720 (30p) @ 10 Mbps, or VGA 640 x 480 (30p) @ 4 Mbps. While recording a movie, you can also simultaneously take 16:9 still images, with picture sizes of 9M (4000 x 2248), 6M (3264 x 1840), or 2M (1920 x 1080).

ISO Sensitivity: The Leica C allows you to adjust the ISO Sensitivity automatically or manually. You can choose from the following settings: Auto, Intelligent ISO (i-ISO), ISO 80, ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800, ISO 1600, ISO 3200, and ISO 6400. Extended ISO allows you to set the sensitivity to an equivalent of ISO 12800.

White Balance: The White Balance setting ensures the desired color is achieved, depending upon the light source. You can set the White Balance automatically, or set a metered White Balance. WB presets include: Clear Sky, Cloudy Sky, Shade, and Incandescent Lighting.

Burst Shooting: The Leica C offers several Burst Shooting modes:

  • Intelligent Burst: The frame rate is approximately 2-10 pictures per second, and is adjusted automatically according with the movements of the subjects. When a fast-moving subject is recorded, the frame rate becomes faster. Maximum number of pictures: 100.
  • Continuous AF: The subject is brought into focus as it is allowed by the frame rate. The exposure and white balance are continually being adjusted. Frame Rate: 2 pictures or 5 pictures per second. Maximum number of pictures: 100.
  • High Speed: Photos are taken at a high rate, with the focus, exposure, and white balance fixed with the first picture. The frame rate can be set to 10 pictures per second at full resolution, and the maximum number of pictures is 12.  You can also increase the frame rate to 40 or 60 pictures per second, but the resolution setting is reduced to a maximum of 5M or 3.5M, respectively.
  • Flash Burst: A series of pictures can be recorded in low light conditions with flash. Focus, exposure, and flash level are all fixed at the first picture. The frame rate depends upon the recording conditions, and the maximum number of pictures that can be taken is 5.

Shooting Modes: Using the Mode Dial on the top panel of the Leica C, you can choose from the following Shooting Modes:

  • Snapshot: A shooting mode for point-and-shoot photography or beginners. The camera optimizes the settings to match the subject and recording environment. These scenes are automatically detected: People, Children, Landscapes, Sunsets, Night Scenes (with people), Night Scenes, Hand-held night scenes, Closeups (Macro), and Automatic (for moving subjects)
  • Program AE: The camera automatically sets both the shutter speed and aperture values according to the brightness of the subject. You can change various settings in the menu as desired.
  • Aperture-Priority: The exposure is determined by the automatically-controlled shutter speed, based on the manually set aperture value.
  • Shutter-Priority: The exposure is determined by the automatically-controlled aperture value, based on the manually set shutter speed.
  • Manual: The exposure is determined by the manually-set aperture value and shutter speed.
  • Panorama: This mode lets you record a panoramic picture by panning the camera in the direction you desire while the camera automatically combines the picture series into a single image. You can set the direction as left-to-right, right-to-left, up-to-down, or down-to-up.
  • Scene Modes: You can take pictures with optimum settings, such as exposure, color, etc. for the following scenes: Portrait, Soft Skin, Scenery, Sports, Night Portrait, Night Scenery, Handheld Night Shot, HDR (High Dynamic Range), Food, Baby, Pet, Sunset, Starry Sky, Through Window, and 3D Photo.
  • Creative Control Modes: You can select from various effects: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color.
  • Custom Modes: There are two Custom Modes (C1 and C2) where you can store your favorite camera settings.

Control Ring: The Leica C has a control ring surrounding the lens that lets you assign a function and quickly change settings on the fly by turning the ring. Functions that can be assigned to the control ring include:

  • Step Zoom: You can set the focal length in steps rather than a continuous zoom. The steps are typical focal lengths for 35mm cameras.
  • Exposure Compensation: You can quickly adjust the exposure for a lighter or darker rendition than the metered exposure. You can adjust the Exposure Compensation +/- 2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps.
  • Aspect Ratio: You can change the aspect ratio to one of the following: 4:3 (for displaying on a non-HDTV), 3:2 (for best printing results), 16:9 (for displaying on an HDTV or wide computer screen), or 1:1 (for making square prints).
  • Sensitivity: Allows you to quickly set the ISO Sensitivity to Automatic or a preset sensitivity between ISO 80 and ISO 12800.
  • White Balance: You can change the white balance setting to an automatic setting or a preset White Balance.
