Features
Overview: The Leica T Camera System is a high-quality interchangeable lens camera that combines style and craftsmanship. The Leica T's body is machined from a single block of solid aluminum. It has a large 3.7" LCD touchscreen, and built-in Wi-Fi for viewing and sharing your photos. The camera has the Leica T bayonet lens mount with contacts for communication between the lens and the camera. No lenses are included with this "body only" package.
Lens Compatibility: Leica lenses have been known for their high quality and clarity for 150 years. The Leica T is compatible with the following T-mount lenses:
- Vario-Elmar-T 18-56mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH: a versatile standard zoom lens
- Super-Vario-Elmar-T 11-23mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH: provides sharp wide angle shots
- Leica APO-Vario-Elmar-T 55-135mm f/3.5-4.5 ASPH: high performance telephoto zoom lens
- Leica Summicron-T 23mm f/2 ASPH: a high quality prime lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length
Image Sensor: The Leica T is equipped with an APS-C-sized (23.6 x 15.7mm) CMOS image sensor with 16.5-million total pixels and 16.3-million effective pixels. The sensor has a native aspect ratio of 3:2. This large image sensor allows you to capture exceptionally sharp, brilliant pictures with high contrast and vivid color.
3.7" LCD Touchscreen Monitor: The Leica T has a large 3.7" TFT LCD touchscreen monitor with 1.3-million pixels (854 x 480 per color channel). Functions using the touchscreen are done by gesture control: touch (brief), double tap, touch (long) and drag, swipe up/down/left/right, and pinch (out/in).
Optional Visoflex Viewfinder: No viewfinder is included with the camera, however, the optional Leica Visoflex electronic viewfinder can be added. The Visoflex provides 100% reproduction of the image with a 2.4 megapixel resolution. The viewfinder has a pivoting eyepiece to let you get very low profile images. The optional Visoflex also contains a GPS receiver for adding location information to your image files, and attaches to the camera's flash shoe.
Built-in Memory and Memory Cards: You can record still images and movies onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Multimedia cards can also be used. In addition, the camera has a 16 GB built-in memory for storing images when no memory card is inserted. You can copy images between the internal memory and an inserted memory card, provided the destination has sufficient memory capacity.
Still Images: The Leica T can record JPEG images with Fine or Superfine compression rates in 3:2 aspect ratio. Raw data in DNG (digital negative) format can be captured on the memory card, but requires appropriate software to edit and convert raw data to JPEG images. You can also combine DNG images with JPEG images in Fine or Superfine, saving images in both file formats simultaneously. Still images can be recorded in the following sizes:
- JPEG:
- 16 MP: 4928 x 3264
- 12.2 MP: 4272 x 2856
- 7 MP: 3264 x 2160
- 3 MP: 2144 x 1424
- 1.8 MP: 1632 x 1080
- DNG: 4944 x 3278 pixels
Video Recording: You can record movies in MP4 format in Full HD (1920 x 1080) and HD (1280 x 720) at 30 frames per second. All movies are recorded in 16:9 aspect ratio.
My Camera Menu: The My Camera menu gives you fast and easy access to the functions you use most. When you touch the My Camera icon in the right toolbar on the touchscreen monitor, a grid opens up with each of the settings and functions. You can scroll up and down using Gesture Controls to find the function or setting you want to change. Touching the function tile provides you a list of the available settings. You can also change the settings and functions using the two adjusting dials on the top panel of the camera body.
Exposure Modes: The camera features five Exposure Modes:
- Program (P): A fully automatic mode--exposure controlled by an automatic shutter speed and aperture setting. You can shift the preset values using the Shift function to get faster shutter speeds for sports photography, or larger depth of field for landscape shots.
- Aperture Priority (A): Aperture Priority allows you to manually set the aperture value to expand or reduce the depth of field while the camera automatically sets the appropriate shutter speed based on the exposure.
- Shutter Priority (T): Shutter Priority allows you to manually set the shutter speed to freeze action or create a sense of motion, while the camera automatically sets the appropriate aperture value. The shutter speed ranges from 30 sec to 1/4000 sec.
- Manual (M): You can manually choose the exposure you want by manually setting both the aperture and shutter speed.
- Scene Modes: There are nine Scene Modes which are designed for specific subject types: Sports, Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Snow/Beach, Fireworks, Candle Light, and Sunset. The last Scene Mode is an Auto option for general use snapshots.
White Balance: You can set the White Balance automatically, manually (using measured results), or use one of the WB presets, based on the type of lighting on the subject. White Balance settings include: Automatic, Daylight, Cloudy, Shadow, Tungsten, Flash, Gray Card 1, Gray Card 2, and Color Temperature.
ISO: The ISO sensitivity setting specifies the possible shutter speeds and aperture settings based on a particular brightness. High sensitivities allow faster shutter speeds and/or smaller apertures. You can choose from Auto ISO, or set it manually between ISO 100 to ISO 12500.
Picture Sequence: The Leica T can take a series of photographs at a frequency of 5 frames per second when shutter speeds of 1/60 or faster are used. A maximum of 12 pictures can be taken before the shooting frequency slows because of buffering.
Distance Setting (Focus): You can set the focus automatically or manually. Pressing the shutter button halfway will set and save the distance setting. An AF auxiliary light will glow to extend the operating range of the Auto Focus system to around 13.1' (4m) in poor lighting conditions. There are several available Auto Focus Modes: Spot, 1 Point, Multi-Point, Touch AF, and Face Detection.
Metering: To set the camera to the lighting conditions, the Leica T offers three Exposure Metering Modes: Multiple Field, Center-weighted, and Spot Metering.
Picture Stabilization: When lighting conditions are poor, it is difficult to get sharp pictures because the required shutter speed is too slow. With the Leica T's Picture Stabilization function, the camera automatically takes two pictures, one after the other. It then digitally combines the two pictures into one. This mode can only be used in single shooting mode with stationary subjects, and only when shutter speeds are 1/4 to 1/30 sec and sensitivity is ISO 800 or lower.
Self-Timer: The built-in Self Timer lets you take photographs after a preset delay. If you want to take a self-portrait, or appear in a group picture, you should use the 12-second self-timer. To avoid camera shake, you should use the 2-second self-timer.
Wi-Fi: You can wirelessly connect with the Leica T by Wi-Fi using the Leica App T, available for Apple iPhone and iPad (with iOS 7.0 or later). The Leica App T allows you to remotely control the camera, taking still images and movies remotely. You can also copy images from the camera to the iPhone/iPad and share them with others on social networks. You can also connect to the camera using your computer on a standard LAN (IEEE 802.11b/g/n). The Leica T is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Mac OS X 10.6 and later.
Flash: The Leica T has a built-in flash unit, and a hot shoe for attaching an external flash. The built-in flash pops up when the main on/off switch is rotated beyond "On". When not in use, it is recessed in the unit. There are 3 basic flash modes: Auto Flash, Manual Flash, and Auto Slow Shutter. All three modes can be activated with a pre-flash that helps reduce the "red eye" effect. To selectively reduce or increase the flash exposure compensation by +/-3.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps.
Image Playback: When viewing a single still image, you can use Gesture Controls or the adjustment dials to enlarge the photo. You can also view 9 thumbnail images at once.
Slide Show: You can show your pictures automatically in a Slide Show. You can choose which pictures will be shown (all, still images only, movies only, or favorites), duration, and whether the slide show will be repeated or not.
USB Connection: The Leica T has a Micro USB connection for connecting the camera to a computer for uploading pictures, firmware updates, and charging the battery. A 4' Micro USB cable is included.
Battery Information: The Leica T is powered by the BP-DC13 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.2V, 985mAh, 7.1Wh). Two versions of the battery are available: one with a black base (for the black version of the Leica T) and one with a silver base (for the silver Leica T). The only difference is simply cosmetic. The base is exposed when the battery is inserted and locked in place. There is no battery "door" on the camera. The battery charges in approximately 160 minutes, using the supplied BC-DC13 battery charger, or via a USB connection (maximum charging current 500mA or 1A) using the supplied USB cable. A fully charged battery has enough power for approximately 400 pictures. The charger comes with six international adapter plugs (US/Japan, EU, UK, China, Australia, and Korea).
Downloadable Software: No software is included with the camera, however, a free download of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is made available when you register the camera on the Leica Camera AG website. Photoshop Lightroom allows you to edit your photos, as well as edit and convert DNG format photos into JPEG images.
