About the NETGEAR AC750 Wi-Fi® Range Extender

Eric A.

Add range to your wireless signal

My house has plenty of nooks and crannies where the signal from my wireless router loses power, including the guest bedroom. The NETGEAR EX6100/AC750 can pick up weak and intermittent signals at the edge of a router's range and amplify them, so dead zones are filled with fast 750 Mbps wireless signal. The module plugs into a standard wall outlet, so it can be located in a home office, child's bedroom, or anywhere else your network struggles to reach.

Product Research

Features

WiFi Range Extender: The NETGEAR AC750 WiFi Range Extender (EX6100) boosts your existing WiFi network by increasing its range and speed. It works with any standard WiFi router to deliver AC750 dual band WiFi with up to 750 Mbps. The AC750 WiFi Range Extender delivers fast WiFi speed and connectivity for smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, and more. A Gigabit Ethernet port provides WiFi connectivity to a wired device like Blu-ray players, game consoles, smart TVs or streaming players over your existing WiFi network.

Applications: Add this WiFi Range Extender to strengthen the WiFi connection in a dead zone of your home or office. Or, boost a hotel's WiFi or connect to a wired Internet connection to create your own AC750 WiFi hotspot. Even, use the WiFi Range Extender as a network bridge for a local LAN device.

802.11ac: The extender supports the 802.11ac networking standard. This new standard offers better speed, improved reliability, and more range than older WiFi networking standards. The extender is also backward compatible with earlier WiFi a/b/g/n standards. However, to get the benefits of 802.11ac, your WiFi router must support the 802.11ac WiFi networking standard. In comparison, the latest 802.11ac WiFi standard is 3x faster than the older 802.11n WiFi standard.

FastLane Technology: FastLane technology improves performance using both WiFi bands. Get the most out of your HD entertainment with FastLane technology. With FastLane technology, the extender connects to your router using one band and connects to your devices using another band. Because a band is dedicated to each function, performance is enhance. FastLane Technology is ideal for HD streaming & online gaming. When you enable FastLane Technology, two options are available.

  • Use the 2.4 GHz band to connect the extender to the WiFi devices and use the 5 GHz band to connect the extender to the WiFi router. Use this mode if your WiFi router supports the 5 GHz band but the devices that you want to use for gaming and streaming support the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Use the 5 GHz band to connect the extender to the WiFi devices and use the 2.4 GHz band to connect the extender to the WiFi router. Use this mode if the devices that you want to use for gaming and streaming support the 5 GHz band but your WiFi router supports the 2.4 GHz band.
Note: If all your devices and your WiFi router support only the 2.4 GHz band, or all your devices and your WiFi router support only the 5 GHz band, do not enable FastLane Technology.

Two WiFi Modes: NETGEAR's AC370 increases the distance of a WiFi network. The extender can connect to your network's WiFi signal and then boost that signal or it can connect to your network with a wired connection and work as an access point. You use the Access Point/Extender switch on the side of the extender to select which way you want to use the extender.

  • Extender Mode: In Extender mode, the extender connects to your existing network's WiFi signal and it rebroadcasts two extender WiFi signals, one in the 2.4 GHz band, and another in the 5 GHz band. When you are too far away to connect to your network's WiFi signal, you can connect to an extender WiFi signal instead.
  • Access Point Mode: Access Point mode creates a WiFi hotspot using a wired Ethernet connection. You can use the extender in access point mode as a WiFi access point and create a new WiFi hotspot by using a wired Ethernet connection.

Dual-Band WiFi  w/ External Antennas: The NETGEAR AC750 features dual-band WiFi with up to 300 Mbps for 2.4 GHz network and 450 Mbps for 5 GHz network. It also features two external antennas for extended range and maximum signal coverage.

Gigabit Ethernet Port: There is one 10/100/1000 Ethernet port with auto-sensing technology. This Gigabit Ethernet port is used to connect a wired device like a smart TV or game console to your home's WiFi network.

Flexible & Secure Setup: The WiFi range extender offers WPS & Web Browser setup. Secure WiFi connections offer the highest level of WPA/WPA2/WPA2-PSK security.

  • WPS: You can use WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) to connect the extender to your WiFi router without typing your existing router's WiFi network name (SSID) or WiFi password.
  • Web Browser: You can use a web browser to log in to the extender and set up its WiFi connection to your existing WiFi router.

WiFi Analytics App: Use the NETGEAR WiFi Analytics app on your Android (OS 2.2+) smartphone or tablet to get advanced analytics to optimize your existing or newly extended WiFi network. Check your network status, WiFi signal strength, identify crowded WiFi channels and much more.

Wall-Plug Design: The AC750 WiFi Range Extender's convenient wall plug design offers discreet and easy placement. It simply plugs into a AC power outlet.

Smart LED: Smart LED indicators help find the best extender placement for optimal WiFi coverage while displaying real-time, extender network status

System Requirements: Make sure your home network meets the following system requirements.

  • Router Type: 2.4 and/or 5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi router or gateway
  • Internet Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, Firefox 2.0 or Safari 1.4, or Google Chrome 11.0 browsers or higher

Firmware Updates: The extender is set up to check for new firmware automatically at login. Click here for the latest firmware/software updates from NETGEAR.

Customer Q&A

Q
Does this range extender use the same SSID as the base router, or does it appear as a separate router with it's own SSID?

A
It's been a year and a half since I bought mine. But I think I remember having some great help from a Crutchfield expert in the set up. I think I remember this unit having its own SSID? But once set up it acts like a repeater / range extender and works great. For most of us this is a one time selection and install.
steve  Jan 12, 2022
A
My Netgear Nighthawk wireless router's app on my phone shows the base station as wired and the Extender as a separate 5GHz device on the network, along with all other devices.
joe  Jan 12, 2022
A
It is configurable, you can either set it to repeat the ssid, or have it be its own ssid. I went with the latter option because I want to control which devices connect where more closely.

Q
Can this be used outside to extend range outdoors, to my swimming pool area for example and a separate garage?

I have my extender on the inside wall next to our sliding door to our lanai/cage/pool area. We have a fire table with seating approx 25' away from the range extender. Before the extender I could not get a wiifi signal. I can now. I also have a TV on the lanai and I stream on that TV without a cable box with no problem. Have had the extender for over a year. Hope that helps.
robert f  Jan 26, 2021
A
From a range extension perspective, yes. However I would not place a router outdoors to be exposed to moisture, heat cold, etc. you may consider placing the extender just inside but very close to the area you want to cover outside. It should perform well through 1 wall.

I purchased one for home use. I do not know if it would work in a car.

I don't think so, as this wifi extender is designed for home use.

Does this new router connect to my old router or is it just plugged into the wall. I have a Net Gear N300. how do I get more speed ? Tom.

the one you are looking at is out of date and is nor secure, if I wes you I would look at going to a Orbi set up and be on a secure system.
donald  Mar 27, 2020
A
It should connect to your router, then plug into wall near your weak signal zone, and it boosts your signal to mobile devices. More speed? Probably a function of upgrading your internet service with your current provider which may also include a router change. Best of luck.
manuel  Mar 27, 2020

This unit gets plugged into an electric outlet. It has increased both upload and download speeds significantly for me.
lisa m.  Mar 27, 2020
A
It is simply plugged into the wall socket. You have to follow the instructions to link wirelessly to your existing router and to set up a network (easy to do). It's eliminated dead areas for us in our bedroom and far end of the house. It's been a very useful addition to our rural home! Paul

Q
Does this unit need to be connected via ethernet cable to a computer/laptop in order to set it up? Or are all connections/set up done wirelessly? I don't have an ethernet port on my laptop.

We did everything wirelessly with this unit. Hope this helps you out

A physical connection is not required. I was out of town when our unit arrived and my wife did the setup.Said it was real simple and we have not had any issues. Always suspected my wife was a great deal smarter than me and her doing the installation validates what I suspected. Well pleased with the unit and there are no spot in our three story house.
michael  Aug 05, 2019

I thought I was going to need one because the information is not clear. However, I did not need one to set it up. Easier than I thought it was going to be. I did it all wirelessly.
kris  Aug 05, 2019
A
I have that system, and two computers. Neither computer is connected to Internet by cable -- all by "air." If your laptop can be on internet, it should happen when the set-up is completed. HOWEVER, there is sometimes a long stretch of time for the actual connection to be made, while Netgear looks around and settles in on it.
e. perren  Aug 05, 2019

Everything for my installation was wireless , it communicates with our router on the other side of the house. From what I was told you are able to connect to it with a cable , but it's mostly used for a gaming scenario. Hope this helps.
andy  Aug 05, 2019

We did not use any cords, We connected all wireless. We literally just plugged it in. It is a booster that relays the existing signal. It works great for us. Before when we tried to log into Netflix, it would just buffer forever, now it is instant. My daughter's wifi signal from her bedroom is awesome now. Our wireless is at 1 end of the house and we plugged in the netgear about midway of the house and it works great.
wendetta  Aug 05, 2019
A
It should be possible to connect wirelessly so long as it links to your existing wifi network.
paul  Aug 05, 2019
A
It does not need to be connected to the modem/router via ethernet, nor does the computer need to be plugged into this unit. This unit gets plugged into the electric outlet and the computer uses the regular Wi-Fi signal. I am NOT a techie and was able to set up this unit for my own use.
lisa m.  Aug 05, 2019
Q
Does this only work with other Netgear equipment or will it work if my main wifi is an Apple Airport?
chris  Apr 23, 2016
1 answer
A
It does not have to be a Netgear router, no: "It works with any standard WiFi router to deliver AC750 dual band WiFi with up to 750 Mbps." You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the extender's main webpage. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
