Retro-looking headphones that live up to their rep
I'd heard a lot about Master & Dynamic's MH40 over-ear headphones, so I was thrilled when they showed up at Crutchfield. The New York-based company has quickly developed a reputation for crafting rock-solid headphones with old-school looks and killer sound. And boy do they know presentation. Just pulling these headphones from their leather storage case felt like a big deal.
The MH40s feel both refined and rugged. High-quality leather lines the flexible metal headband. It's reinforced with steel headphone sliders. When I slipped these 'phones on — even without active noise cancellation — they fit firmly and blocked out office chatter and ruffling papers.
Incredibly clean, accurate sound
I tried the MH40 headphones on an unfortunate, mournful day for music fans — the day we lost David Bowie. Shocked at the news, I listened to his new album and a playlist of his legendary catalog. Perhaps the best compliment I can give the MH40s is that they stayed out of the way. On a day when I just wanted to hear Bowie, Masters & Dynamic made that happen, without flavoring.
His new song "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" stood out. The bass line and drums hit with authority, while cymbals shimmered and the horns sounded open. Vocals melted their way into the mix cleanly and beautifully. Even when all these sounds collapsed on one another to evoke chaos, I could pick out each distinct instrument through these 'phones — especially Bowie's sweet yet visceral pipes.
Well-built and softly padded
As cool as these heavy-duty metal 'phones feel in your hand, you may worry that they'd be tough to wear. Not true. Padding and proper weight distribution ensure a comfortable fit. Soft lambskin leather lines the memory foam earpads so that, while snug, the headphones never feel like they're clamping. And the sturdy construction is very much welcome. They simply don't slip around as you listen throughout the day.

Ear Pads/Headband: The ear pads are made with memory foam, covered in soft lambskin for superior comfort and breathability. The ear pads are removable for cleaning or replacement, and attach to the ear cups with magnets. The headband features heavy grain premium cowhide on the outside and lambskin on the inside.

Both cables have a straight 3.5mm plug that's compatible with many smartphone cases. A snap-on 3.5mm-to-6.3mm (1/4") adapter is provided for use with home components. The in-line microphone is separate from the remote, and placed closer to your mouth for better vocal clarity and reduced noise. The remote and mic are compatible with Apple products: iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, and iPod touch (2nd generation or later). Remote functions for Apple include: Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause, Answer/Hang up call, Skip forward, Skip Backward, Fast forward, Fast reverse, and Voice Commands. The remote has limited functionality (play/pause) with Android devices.
Dual Audio Ports: The headphones have 3.5mm audio ports on both ear cups. This allows you to connect the headphone cable to either the left or right side. It also allows you to share your music by plugging another set of headphones into the unused headphone jack.
Mute Button: The MH50s are equipped with a mute button on the outside of the right ear cup. When the button is pressed in, the audio is muted. When the button is pressed, the button springs out, and the audio is un-muted.
