About the Yuneec Tornado H920 Hexacopter RTF Bundle

Eric A.

Fly higher, faster, and smarter

I've seen quite a few four-bladed quadcopters zipping around, so the Yuneec Tornado H920 — a six-bladed hexacopter — really caught my eye the first time I saw one at Crutchfield HQ. The advantages are obvious. The hexacopter can carry a fairly heavy load, lift it higher in the air, and fly faster and maneuver more quickly in the bargain. It's an aerial camera platform par excellence, and it ships in a sturdy aluminum case, ready to fly just moments after it arrives on your doorstep. The drone comes with the powerful and intuitive ST24 Personal Ground Station flight controller, two nearly-full rechargeable batteries, and a dual charger.
The included ST24 Personal Ground Station offers precise monitoring and control of the Yuneec Tornado H920 drone.

Note: Matching camera and gimbal mount are sold separately.

A camera platform for serious filmmaking

The drone flies like a dream, and when you connect the Yuneec ProAction+ CGO4 camera with gimbal mount (not included), it becomes a high-tech camera platform that opens up tons of options for filmmaking on a budget. Imagine piloting your Tornado H920 to capture a car chase from above, or let it hover to capture an establishing shot before you cut to the close-up of the actors. It adds a whole new dimension to small-budget movie making.

Pinpoint flight control

The ST24 Personal Ground Station flight controller will make you feel like a real pilot, too. It's a sophisticated piece of hardware built around a 24-channel 2.4GHz radio control transmitter that offers a powerful Wi-Fi® link with your aircraft. As the drone takes it a high-level view, you'll get live video streaming back to the controller's 7" high-resolution touchscreen. Control joysticks are placed for easy thumb access, and surrounded by monitoring displays, switches, and dials that offer precise, intuitive control of the Tornado H920.

Product Research

Features

Tornado H920: The Yuneec Tornado H920 is a professional multi-rotor drone for aerial photography and videography (camera not included). Its unique modular design and innovative features make it possible to capture impressive photographs and video footage for a variety of uses. For your convenience, it is compatible with two camera options - the industry standard Panasonic GH4 and Yuneec's CGO4 gimbal camera (both sold separately).

Optional CGO4 Gimbal Camera (sold separately): Yuneec has developed the CGO4 gimbal camera in close cooperation with Panasonic to combine the best of Panasonic's camera quality and Yuneec's award-winning engineering. The CGO4 camera features a 3x optical zoom lens, 16 megapixel photos, 4K-resolution video and distortion-free picture quality. The zoom lens can be adjusted either by sliding the zoom picker on screen or pushing the K6 Slider to a certain position. The integrated 3-axis self-stabilizing gimbal, enables you to capture smooth and fluent photographs and video footage.

  • Modular Design: The modular design allows the CGO4 gimbal camera to not only be attached its included ProAction ground handle, but also Yuneec's Tornado H920 Hexacopter. Compared to traditional DSLR cameras, the CGO4 gimbal camera enables a longer flight time on the Tornado H920 thanks to its lightweight design.
  • Follow & Global Mode: In Follow Mode, the camera lens moves in the direction of Tornado H920. In Global Mode, the camera lens sticks to a fixed direction instead of following the movement of the H920 aerial drone.
  • 4K Video/16MP Photos: The camera records 16MP still-images (JPEG/RAW) and 4K video (MP4/MOV) to a SD or SDHC memory card (up to 128GB). SD/SDHC memory card not included.
  • Optional Lenses: In addition to its industry-standard 3x optical zoom lens, the CGO4 gimbal camera is also compatible with the Olympus 12mm, Olympus 45mm prime lenses and Olympus 14-42mm zoom lens to meet photographers' needs. All lenses sold separately.

ST24 Smart Transmitter & Controller: Not only is the ST24 an advanced 24-channel 2.4GHz RC transmitter - it's a personal ground station that includes built-in hardware and functionality for a 5.8GHz video downlink, 7-inch touchscreen display and built-in Android powered tablet. With the convenient and portable ST24, it's no longer necessary to use separate components to view real-time video and telemetry data during flight.

  • 7" Touchscreen Display: Real-time telemetry data made available on the screen during flight including flight mode, altitude, speed over ground, distance from home, camera status, GPS position coordinates, and aircraft battery status. Controls expected by professionals include adjustable video resolution and white balance, while light exposure can be controlled automatically or manually, including ISO and Shutter Speed. Camera controls also allow users to take pictures in RAW(DNG) and JPEG format.
  • Team Mode: With Team Mode, you can bind one ST24 Ground Station to the Tornado H920 and another ST24 Ground Station to the CGO4 gimbal camera simultaneously. Capturing truly creative content is vastly more practical with cooperation between pilot and camera operator.

3 Flight Modes: The Tornado H920 is equipped with 3 different Flight modes - Smart Mode, Angle Mode, and Home Mode.

  • Smart: In Smart Mode, the H920 always flies in the direction in which the right joystick is moved by the pilot, regardless of the direction in which the nose is pointing. So if you move the stick to the right, the H920 will also move to the right regardless of the position of the nose, even if it is in the middle of turning. The mode is useful for first-time pilots and pilots who have lost their bearings when flying in Angle Mode.
  • Angle: Angle Mode is designed for pilots with a little experience (those who have already mastered Smart Mode), because in this mode the H920 moves in line with the joystick, in the direction in which the nose is pointed. So, if you move the right stick to the left, the H920 will tilt to the left and thus move to the left. That is assuming that the nose is pointing away from you. If the nose is pointing towards you, the H920 will move to the right from your point of view.
  • Home: In Home mode the GPS system allows the Tornado H920 to automatically fly back in a straight line toward the direction of the last take-off position, and automatically land within 13-26 ft (4-8m) of the pilot. This can be very helpful for first-time pilots who are not quite ready to land the Tornado H920 themselves. It can also be helpful for pilots that lose orientation during flight; simply activate Home Mode until the Tornado H920 automatically moves toward the home position, and once you've confirmed orientation switch back to Angle (Pilot) Mode. And if the Tornado H920 ever loses the link with the ST24 it will automatically enter Home Mode.

Smart Circle & Follow Me Modes: In most cases the Smart Circle mode will keep the H920 approx. 8m / 26 ft. away from you provided you are positioned 8 m /26 ft. behind the H920. The Follow Me mode ensures the Tornado H920 moves along with you.

Retractable Landing Gear: Thanks to the Tornado H920's retractable landing gear, you get a full 360° view of the world below without anything obstructing your view.

Rechargeable Batteries: The Yuneec Tornado H920 Hexacopter is powered by two lithium-polymer rechargeable batteries (4000mAh) that provide up 24 minutes of flight time. A third battery can be purchased and installed for longer flight time. The batteries can be recharged using the supplied charger and the included AC power cord. It will take 2-3 hours to fully charge the batteries. The ST24 Smart Controller is powered by a pre-installed lithium-ion rechargeable battery (8700mAh) and can also be recharged using the supplied battery charger.

Portable Storage Case: The Tornado H920 comes with an aluminum storage case with interior foam padding and a locking lid. The case offers a carry handle on each side and comes with four wheels for easy transport. The H920's compact dimensions and foldable arms enable it to easily fit inside the case with all of its included accessories.

Neckstrap & Sunshade Accessories: You can install the included neck-strap to help hold and support the ST24 Controller. You can also install the included LCD screen sunshade to help improve visibility in direct sunlight.

Preparing To Fly: Always operate the Tornado H920 in open areas (approximately 10000 square feet/930 square meters or more) that are free from people, vehicles, trees and other obstructions. Never fly near or above crowds, airports or buildings. Never attempt to operate Tornado H920 nearby tall buildings/obstructions that do not offer a clear view of the sky (a minimum clearance of 100°). Be sure to place the Tornado H920 on a level and stable surface before powering On the Tornado H920 Aircraft and the ST24 Ground Station.
