Helix Esprit E4X

High fidelity with excellent imaging

Helix's German engineering pedigree really shows up in their Esprit Series speakers, which offer big technological bang for the buck. These E4X 4" speakers use a 3/4" silk dome tweeter to give you smooth, detailed high frequency reproduction. Each speaker features a rigid 4" woven fiberglass cone that delivers tight midrange and bass reproduction, while the durable rubber surround helps this speaker provide exceptional sound for years to come.

Built for power

A tough stamped-steel basket houses the woofer and tweeter, providing the stability needed to maintain accurate reproduction when the music's turned up loud. The Esprit E4X speakers will sound great powered by an aftermarket car stereo, but an outboard amplifier will give you the best audio quality. Grilles are included.

Product Highlights:

  • 4" 2-way speakers (pair)
  • woven fiberglass woofer cone with rubber surround
  • 3/4" silk dome tweeter
  • power range: 5-30 watts RMS (90 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 80-22,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 89 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-7/8"
  • grilles included
  • warranty: 2 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers overal quality is robust, packaging, and installation instructions are very well thought out. The speakers sound crystal clear and put out alot of sound for their size. I was really superprized how clear and airing the sound was comping from these little guys

Pros: Installation was easy. There were no modifications required to the enclosers that they wne into in the rear deck of the automobile. The mounting flange was designed for easing bend and break corners for those corners of the flange that may interfere with the speaker enclosure.

Cons: None

Great sounding little speakers - not so easy installation

1995 BMW M3
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As far as 4 inch 2-way auto speakers go, these are definitely premium priced - but they are also clearly premium quality. I have an 'original owner' low mileage E36 M3 that is undergoing an extensive 'renewal' as it reaches its 20th birthday, and among the areas undergoing a bit of upgrade are the speakers - the OEM are not so hot. The options for the rear deck are not vast, unless you want to start hacking at the deck to accommodate speakers larger than the 4 inchers that are stock for the car. After looking hither and yon for 4 inch options, these rose to the top. I'm not sorry I sprang for them. The sound, even using the OEM head and trunk mounted 6 disc CD changer, is vastly improved. Of course there is no deep bass coming from these small deck speakers (but there are slightly larger drivers up front in the car) .Howeer, they handle the low end cleanly. The high end is vibrant and crisp. But be warned: I took these to my BMW dealer and asked them to install while I was having some extensive mechanical work done, and figured that installation would be a minor operation. They told me it took quite a bit of tinkering to get these to fit the original rear deck speaker enclosures. From what they said, if i had been charged the usual shop rate for the installation, it would have equaled or exceeded the cost of the speakers themselves - fortunately, I'm a bit of a regular there and they did this for a de minimis charge. These aren't simply a 'drop in' replacement.

Pros: Excellent build quality, crisp clean highs and good handling of the mid-bass for their small size.

Cons: Installation not necessarily as simple as Crutchfield describes, at least not in an E36 BMW rear deck. I might have docked the speakers a star for this, but my review addresses the product itself, not compatability issues.

Excellent speakers

2011 BMW 1 Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These replaced a set of Polks 4" speakers after I heard buzzing in one. I thought the Polks were great (when new)... but these are even better (location is rear deck of my BMW 1M). Excellent clarity and decent bottom end (for the size).

Pros: Quality of the woofer cone and tweeter.

Cons: Frame is stamped steel. It probably is adequate for the size but still... you'd expect something a little more rigid for the price paid.

best little speaker ever,

1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these into the front dash of my 1986 Mercedes 190e and they sound great! Clear and crisp sounds and a definite upgrade from the 4'' Infinity speakers which I replaced. The mids and highs are great. Bass is adequate (what you would expect from 4'' speakers). I would recommend these over any brand. They are German, made in Germany and it shows!

Pros: Sound quality and speaker quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You can see the quality of these speakers right out of the box. The sound quality is excellent considering my roadster only has two dash speakers. I purchased these based on the previous review by a Mercedes 560SL owner. I question the "it fits" considering the 3/4" of metal I had to cut and grind from behind the dash and the speaker's rubber magnet insulator. Perhaps other 4" speakers Crutchfield offers fit just as well.

Pros: Great sound upgrade from 25 year old stock speakers

Cons: Fit

1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well made. Vast improvement in sound quality in Mersedes 560sl. I do not need rear speakers with these. Installation was a little tough since they have much bigger magnets and would not fit without some grinding and filing. Worth the effort tho. Kept my original radio and improved sound.

Pros: Quality. sound.

Cons: takes a little time to install.

Product Research

Woofer Materials: Each woofer cone is made of woven fiberglass and has a durable rubber surround. This woven fiberglass material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex and resulting in faster transients and finer detail.

Magnet cover: The E 4X are shipped with a rubber magnet cover to protect the speaker. If the cover is removed the depth changes slightly:

  • Top Mount Depth: 1.77"
  • Bottom Mount Depth: 1.88"

Tweeters: Each speaker has a 3/4" silk dome tweeter with a neodymium motor structure.

Removable Mounting Tabs: Most 4" factory speakers use four mounting screws, however, in some vehicles, only two are used. In these cases, you can bend the unnecessary mounting tabs until they break off. The E 4X also includes the mounting clips used in some older European cars (in this case, all four mounting tabs are removed). Care should be taken handling the speaker after any tabs are removed because the broken edges may be sharp.

Sorry, I didn't use the grills. I mounted them in the dash of a 1988 Mersedes 560sl. It was a tight fit. [ MARK  Jan 26, 2015 ]
Hi Mark, The answer is that the grill is 51/2 inches in diameter from end to end. The speakers also sound great. [ Mark  Jan 26, 2015 ]

Sorry, can't help with that. I installed them in the rear deck of an E36 M3 and used the grills that came stock with the car, tossed the Helix grilles. [ DAVID M.  Jan 25, 2015 ]
I kept the factory speaker grills on my 1989 MB 560 SL. Unfortunately can't help you, since I threw out the grills that came with the speakers. BTW, the speakers sound much better with the factory Becker stereo. [ miguel  Jan 25, 2015 ]
Sorry, I can't. I used the existing grills in my vehicle. Wish I could have been more helpful. [ ROBERT C  Jan 25, 2015 ]

ask Crutchfield to take a grill out of one of their boxes and measured for you then you'll know the diameter the speakers the car I put in is sold good luck [ CHRIS  Jan 25, 2015 ]
