About the Boss Audio PHANTOM 800

Jon Paul

(Heck)-raising sound for your motorcycle or ATV

Ever jump out of your seat a little bit when a skeletal hand burst out of the ground towards the end of a horror flick? Of course you have. Ever thought, “Hey, wouldn't it be cool if that hand was holding a 3” powered speaker with built-in Bluetooth connectivity?” Sure, who hasn't? Okay, maybe it's just us, but either way, these Boss speakers are totally wicked – in the good way.

It'll all sound good through these rugged, all-weather 3" Boss speakers. The Class D amp will produce plenty of punch, and the in-line controls will allow you to control the volume and other necessary functions.

Versatile installation options

The package includes two 3" full-range speakers and all the hardware you need for installation, including mounting brackets that can fit 1" to 1-1/2" handlebars.

Installation Note: If an ignition-power source (at least 5A) is not available, you'll need an SPDT relay (sold separately) for connecting power to the battery.

Features

Speakers: The Boss Phantom 800 handlebar speaker system features two 3" full-range, weatherproof speakers with integrated custom-tooled skeleton-hand mounts. Both speakers are powered from a built-in Class-D amplifier mounted in the left speaker. Included speaker wires pass right channel signals to the right handlebar speaker.

Sources: The Phantom 800 speaker system features two playback source options:

  • Aux Input: A 3.5mm Aux input jack is included for connecting to the audio output of a portable device such as an MP3 player or a smartphone. A protective rubber cap is provided for the 3.5mm jack when not in use.
  • Bluetooth Streaming: Built-in Bluetooth technology lets you stream music, via the A2DP protocol, from a compatible device like a smartphone. This lets you play music stored on the device or stream from music services like Pandora or Spotify. A simple pairing procedure (default passcode: 0000) lets you connect your device for playback. Note: Bluetooth hands-free phone calls are not supported.

Remote Volume Control: Included with the left speaker's wiring is a remote volume control for adjusting the volume for both speakers. The remote volume control is compact enough to mounted or zip-tied within easy reach of the rider.

Mounting: Designed for motorcycles and UTVs, the Phantom 800 speakers feature skeleton-hand handlebar mounts integrated with each speaker. The mounts include pre-installed rubber inserts for mounting to 1" diameter handlebars, but inserts for 1.25" and 1.5" handlebars are also provided. Allen-keys are included for mounting and adjusting the tilt of each speaker.

Wiring: The Phantom 800 speaker system's left speaker includes a 60" wiring harness with power and ground wires that will need to be tied into the vehicle's electrical system. Power should be accessed from a switched source, allowing the system to power on and off with the ignition switch. An inline 5A mini-fuse is provided to protect the speaker system.

Note: If an ignition-power source of at least 5A is not available, an SPDT relay (sold separately) may be required for connecting power to the battery.

Q
Can you wire up 2 sets of these speakers together for a 4 speaker system?
michael  Aug 15, 2021
1 answer
A
These do not have a way of outputting audio to allow a second set to be used with them
jason  Aug 21, 2021 (Staff)
Q
How many watts are the speakers?
james  Mar 25, 2021
2 answers
A
They don't indicate wattage in the literature. However there is an inline 5 amp fuse which combined with a 12 volt system should max out at 60 watts. They are really loud but at highway speeds they struggle to be heard. The mounting options and long lengths of wire make setup very customizable. Nice speakers. I think the grill is starting to rust far too quickly but I'll hit it with some black paint.

not sure about the watch but they look good and sound good I got to mount it on a 20/20 road King

Q
When I read the first question of can you clearly hear these speakers at highway speeds the fist answer was yes even on his stratoliner at 100mph. The second answer was No without a windshield nope and with a windshield does not make much difference. Who do I believe?

Hi Brian, thank you for your question! Sound quality is really subjective to the end user. There could be 10 people who love a speaker and it's performance in particular environments and uses, and then there could be 10 more behind those who say that the performance does not meet their needs. We will be more than happy to go over these speakers, as well as look into other options that would suit your needs. Also, keep in mind that we do offer a generous 60-day-from-date-of-purchase return policy. So if you were to try these out, and not like them, we will be happy to set you up with a return or exchange. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
Is this system good enough that you can clearly hear the audio at highway speeds?

A
Yes even at 100mph on my 1900 stratoliner with Vance Hines pipes
michael  Nov 26, 2019
A
No Windshield is Nope! With a Windshield means very little.
michael  Nov 26, 2019
Q
From the sound of it in future models I for one refuse to buy anything audio that doesn't have audio outs for growth and more suitable to each person's needs adjustments. I would think you'd want that as well as it opens doors for you to be able to sell more products. While ensuring the sound the individuals purchasing your products are pleased with their experience. It's a win win for everyone involved. Food for thought?

Q
So I just hook these up to power and ground and control them via bluetooth on my smart phone?
scott  May 21, 2020

A
I hooked mine up to a toggle switch so it won't drain battery, and yes they work off blue tooth
scott  May 24, 2020
A
Yes, I hooked the hot wire up to the ignition power so it turns of with the key and the ground wire to the negative on the battery. it does come with a volume control button I mounted on the handle bars but you also use the Bluetooth volume. It's a nice system, enjoy.
garry  May 23, 2020

U have to install a Relay in between the power wire so u can turn the speakers off and on and use them with accessory switch on ur Motorcycle. The speakers itself does not have a power on/off switch it self. Thats why u have to install a relay so u can use the bikes ignition switch to power them on/off. After wired correctly then u can use ur Bluetooth on ur phone or use a mini wired cord from ur cell phone to the speakers. Also mp3 players works also.
michael  May 22, 2020
Q
are the speakers a constant drain on batteries?
jeffrey  Mar 08, 2020
3 answers
A
I had mine professionally installed. They only draw power when the bike is on.
shawn  Mar 09, 2020
A
U have to wire to the Auxiliary Power Ignition Switch and use a Relay! Look at Boss Audio Website for wiring instructions and ask a Crutchfield Tech!!
michael  Mar 08, 2020
A
That depends on how you hook them up. On my HD Fatboy Lo I attached them to the Accessory cable, so it turns on when I switch the bike on, but does not drain the battery when the bike is off. The speakers themselves do not have an on off switch, but that can be added in line if you want to get creative

Q
Can u buy a single speaker to replace one?
h p fruge  Jul 16, 2019
1 answer
A
No we don't sell the speakers as individual units. You would need to buy a pair.
casey  Jul 21, 2019 (Staff)
Q
Can 2 pairs of these speakers be paired to work together to enable a 4 speaker system?
jonathan  Jun 18, 2019
2 answers
A
I only have a single pair, if the blue tooth will connect to both, or maybe wire them together it might, one thing these speakers are big, I have a 2017 Harley low rider and I don't have room for another set.
scott  Jun 19, 2019
A
Not for sure but im thinking No! Contact Boss Audio to be certain!
