Features

Drivers: The Bose 251 environmental speaker features a 5-1/4" woofer and two 2-1/2" Twiddler drivers with ultra-durable, polymer fiber composite cones built to withstand temperatures from a blistering 158° F to a frigid -40° F. Additionally, the speaker can withstand salt fog, sun, high humidity (100% RH), vibrations and mechanical shock.

Articulated Array Speaker Design: By precisely positioning the drivers inside the speaker cabinet, an Articulated Array speaker design can provide a large, consistent sound field. This allows for a more even sound coverage with these outdoor speakers.

Water-Resistant Cabinet: Engineered with a water-resistant, weather-tight polypropylene housing, these speakers provide extra durability through extreme weather conditions and still deliver great high-fidelity sound. For additional protection, the speaker uses a galvanized, powder coated steel grille.

Multi-Chambered Bass Enclosure: Uniquely structured, the chambers within this patented design filter out unwanted audible distortion in the low-frequency range. They also improve speaker efficiency, resulting in deeper bass from a small enclosure.

5-Way Binding Posts: The nickel-plated brass 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Mounting: Weather-resistant mounting brackets are also included to allow for easy installation. The speakers can be moved up and down in the mounting brackets, allowing you to position them for optimum imaging.

Q
I have 4 of these speakers. Can someone please tell me the correct way to wire them to my denon Receiver in the back. I don't think all the wires go to 1 terminal on the Receiver. Any help would be great?

YOU HAVE A RIGHT SPEAKER AND A LEFT SPEAKER HOOK THE VARIOUS POSITIVE WIRES FOR THE LEFT SPEAKERS TOGETHER LIKEWISE NEGATIVES TO NEGATIVES.. DO SAME WITH RIGHT SPEAKER THEN PUT THE LEFT SPEAKER NEGATIVES INTO OR CONNECTED TO THE LEFT SPEAKER NEGATIVES AND DO THE SAME WITH THE LEFT SPEAKER POSITIVES AND REPEAT PROCESS ON THE THE RIGHT SPEAKERS

harold  Apr 09, 2022
A
No. Not unless these speakers are hooked up to a receiver that has Bluetooth capabilities.
jeremy  Apr 06, 2022
A
no they need an amplifier to drive the speakers
tim  Apr 06, 2022
Q
what's they frequency response/range?
kirk  Aug 30, 2021
1 answer
A
Bose doesn't publish this type of information for thier consumer products. However they have what appears as an identical product in thier pro series which supplies this type of information and the details regarding sound and frequency distribution areas (horizontal and vertical). Do a search on the web for the technical data sheet "Bose Panaray 302 A" speakers. I believe this will answer your question.

bryan  Jun 01, 2021

No, Please research the Bose Panaray 302 A speaker, it is the 70/100v version of this speaker.

How close can these speakers be mounted to one another. I'd like to place them on either side of a 55 inch outdoor TV. Any issue doing that?

I have a pair of these speakers on an outdoor patio and they are up 12 foot high and approx 40 feet apart. They are an incredible acoustic team with crisp treble and mid tones but incredible bass base as well. I don't want to say buy something smaller because I do not know what type of stereo is being used to power these. These outdoor Bose speakers are the best sound investment I have ever made??
randy  Jun 26, 2020
A
I recommend place them 6' maximum. The sound is great A+. I never take off from the wall either to cleaning. They are made to dust, rain, who cares. They are awesome! Hope this help you!
randy ivan  Jun 26, 2020
Q
can they get rained on ?
jonathan  Mar 08, 2020

A
Yes
addicuss  Mar 09, 2020
A
I do not have mine in the path of direct rains but they have gotten wet from some sideway rainstorms and they still perform magnificently. The sound quality is unsurpassed and I have had a few pairs of outdoor speakers over the years. Well worth the price. I am presently sitting outside on a large patio listening to some fab sounding jazz on my Bose??????
randy  Mar 08, 2020
A
Yes. They are outdoor speakers.
erick w  Mar 08, 2020
A
3 years old....I have mine mounted under my roof line. They are only somewhat protected from the rain, so getting them wet does not seem to be a problem but I wouldn't mount them where the speakers are directly rained on every time it rains. I would imagine at some point in time you would have a operating issue. Hope this helps.....
scott  Mar 08, 2020
A
Yes have been rained on snowed on and still perform fine

Q
Recently purchased 8 speakers and was wondering what amp and gauge of wire would work best to run these without loss of quality in sound? It's for a large community pool where noise is loud and we want to hear the music clearly

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

I put 4 in a 20 x 25 pool house patio. They sound awesome. You won't be disappointed.
steven  Feb 19, 2018
A
Two would be plenty. I have two mounted on my shop which 40 foot wide when you turn the volume up. You can hear them over 100 feet away.
travis  Feb 19, 2018
A
Two will work, but four will work better, assuming your receiver can do a true 4 speaker. They sound fantastic (2) in our metal building used as a weight room. 60 x 40
rheynard  Feb 19, 2018
A
2 is more than enough. They are wide angled sound proj
roger  Feb 19, 2018
A
Should be fine with 2 provided you have a decent enough receiver driving them. I have 2 for a 30 by 30 pool deck and they are more than sufficient to lay a good beat down
daryl  Feb 19, 2018
A
I only have two!
jeannicole  Feb 19, 2018
A
My backyard is almost 1/2 an acre and it fills my yard with sound.

Q
How many 251 speakers would I need for a 40' by 60' area?
jfloy  Nov 13, 2017
3 answers
A
Depends on how loud you want I guess. They have no bass sound to them. But are excellent out speakers. I have 4 on my shop. Two facing the driveway and two facing the backyard. They can be heard from over 100 feet away at 3/4 volume.
travis  Nov 14, 2017
A
4 - it would give you great sound in entire area.
kim  Nov 14, 2017
A
You need only four speakers to provide an optimal sound.

I live in Tennessee where the temperature can be 105 or -5. I have had a set of 251 exposed to this climate for 10 years without any issue. Love these speakers.
kim  Nov 14, 2017
A
I live in Rockland County. NY where the temperature gets below freezing in the winter. These speakers can withstand cold temperatures so I do leave these Bose speakers outside all year long.
charles s  Dec 26, 2015
A
I did take them down. I didn't see any need for them to suffer through the weather. Mine were in an easy place to get to. I'm in northern NY.

Q
Can I hook these speaker up to my Bose soundtouch 20? I have speaker wire ran to my outdoor area. I'd like to run them off of my soundtouch, is this possible?? thanks..Ernie..
ernie  Sep 26, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Ernie. Thank you for your question. The Soundtouch 20 does not have speaker terminals, or the extra amplified channels to run another pair of passive speakers. The built in amplifier of the Soundtouch 20 is to just power the built in speakers.
hogan  Sep 26, 2023 (Staff)

Q
Can you play music from your phone through these speakers?
kelly  Aug 09, 2021
4 answers
A
Yes you can listen to music with your phone. You need to buy the SoundTouch SA-5 Amplifier.
jose  Aug 15, 2021
A
No, although Bose does carry blue tooth enabled speakers that allows for that.
corey  Aug 09, 2021
A
They are not Bluetooth or WiFi speakers. The speakers require connection to an amplifier. I have them connected to a BlueSound Powernode 2i, which allows you to control music thru the Blue OS app from your phone.
kevin p  Aug 09, 2021
A
Not directly. The speakers need to be wired to a receiver. If your receiver has Bluetooth, you would connect your phone to it.
brian  Aug 09, 2021
Q
Can these speakers operate without speaker wire? I want to wall mount them on my pool deck/patio. I have electrical outlets located where the speaker would be installed. If not, alternatives?

A
No. you need to look at wireless speakers
cody  Jul 18, 2021
A
Nope they are wired speakers
amy  Jul 18, 2021
A
No they are not wireless. You would have to get a wireless transmitter and powered converter. That might get a little pricey to purchased everything. Just find speakers that are already wireless might be easier.
thomas  Jul 16, 2021
Q
Can these be hooked up to tv?

yes but you need to buy the amp ... i have the sound touch amp and can control from my phone
benjamin  May 06, 2021
A
No. This is a passive speaker and needs to be connected to an amplifier receiver to work. If your amplifier has a bluetooth capability, then this speaker will work.
jenitha  May 06, 2021
A
Yes! I have the choice of streaming music from my back porch using the SoundTouch app, or simply connecting with my iPhone via Bluetooth and playing music from my library.
cliff  May 06, 2021
A
No. They need to be hard wired to your receiver. I then use the Bluetooth connection in my receiver to stream music from my phone.
brian  May 06, 2021
Q
Any reason I couldn't mount these speakers on a porch ceiling instead of a wall?
d  Aug 11, 2020
4 answers
A
You can definitely mount these to a ceiling. I mounted them to the soffits in my yard. The brackets can be adjusted for either ceiling or wall.
brett  Aug 12, 2020
A
You should be able to mount them to the ceiling. According to the instructions you can mount them to a table upside down so the bracket should work the opposite way on the ceiling! Hope that was helpful.
thomas  Aug 12, 2020
A
I just looked at mine. The brackets appear to have adequate clearance to swing up and allow ceiling mounting.
michael a  Aug 11, 2020
A
Yes you can. No problem.

A
No,sorry
raul  Jul 23, 2019
A
Love the speakers but you really need a separate deck to power them. Check the specs I suspect they are at least 50 watts each.
alex  Jun 02, 2019
A
They are wired to my home. I installed a control four smart home and the wife wanted speakers outside. Only reason why I bought them was they can take a beating from Mother Nature and I had them prior for seven years only seven because we moved. Second owner still has them hooked and working.
julio  Jun 02, 2019
A
These speakers are just regular speakers. Very good ones at that!
charles  Jun 02, 2019
A
No ,these are for direct wiring to your amp/receiver. I prefer a wired speaker so I don't loose signal gain or get unwanted interference from other sources. I put these at my poolside under my pergola ran wires thru a PVC pipe thru my house wall and put a banana plate on inside wall to connect to receiver. If bad weather comes.or long period of non use I unplug from wall to prevent lightning coming into receiver. They are not bass heavy but do play loud enough to hear clearly 100 ft away. A little more.work on a wiring plan but well worth it. Friends n family like my setup.
john  Jun 02, 2019
A
No, they are not smart speakers, but the sound and build quality are excellent.

Q
will these work for the front of a sailboat exposed to heavy weather? are they that weather resistant?
sanjay  Apr 04, 2017
2 answers
A
I live in Florida with some extreme rain. Mine are mounted on my patio and take the full brunt of the storms with no issues. My concern would be the salt water if you plan on sailing on the ocean.
brian  May 06, 2021
A
I really don't know. My Bose-251 speakers are mounted outside on my deck exposed to the weather and do fine. I had a previous set of Bose-251 speakers outside on my deck for over 15 years with no problems. They started experiencing issues last year so I bought a new set. I am not sure about the effects of the marine environment salt water etc.
david  Apr 04, 2017
Q
Do they need a power source, or run off speaker wire?
joe  Jul 14, 2016
5 answers
A
Speaker wire. They will not connect directly to a phone or mp3 player. They must be hooked to an amplifier via speaker wire.
john  Jul 18, 2016
A
The don't need a Bose amp - just regular speaker wire hooked up to a receiver or external amp for a second zone. Powerful speakers that disappear on a house with white trim boards.
christopher  Jul 15, 2016
A
They run off of whatever wattage your receiver is sending them through the speaker wire.
eric  Jul 15, 2016
A
I actually returned these speakers as I decided to get Rock speakers instead. I am not sure I understand your question. These would be connected via speaker wire, but would need some sort of power source, ie Sonos Connect Amp, or to be hooked up to your receiver. They are not self powered if that is what you were asking.
andrew  Jul 15, 2016
A
Just 18/2 speaker wire to a basic Onkyo amp. They're on my friends huge house facing the water. The sound is unreal, you will not be disappointed.

jon  May 06, 2016
A
Yes, The bigger the better, I'm throwing 140W per channel at them. FYI, you might want to pick up a subwoofer as well, they don't have much base. Look at the JBL Xtreme speaker on here if your looking for iPod outdoor'ish speakers.
