Our take on the Toshiba 32AV500U

If you're looking for a great deal on a reliable, well-built HDTV, the Toshiba 32AV500U gives you plenty of reasons to skip the no-name brands. Every Toshiba flat-panel TV starts with a CineSpeed™ LCD panel, which consistently receives high marks from reviewers for smooth motion handling and wide viewing angles. The glossy black bezel adds a touch of elegance that's unexpected in this price range.

Crisp, clear HD reception is only the beginning
The 32AV500U gives you so many ways to enjoy a great picture. Its built-in tuners pull in all types of local over-the-air broadcasts, from ordinary analog to digital high-definition (antenna required). And a built-in "QAM" tuner lets cable TV subscribers watch unscrambled channels — including your local network HD channels in most areas — without the added hassle and expense of a set-top box.

All your video sources receive the star treatment
Even after local TV stations complete their transition to digital broadcasting in 2009, many viewers will continue to watch analog and other lower-resolution signals — from non-HD sources like VCRs, camcorders and video game consoles. Toshiba's video processing circuitry does a great job of cleaning up these signals. Also, the DynaLight dynamic backlight control monitors the brightness level of each video frame and automatically adjusts backlight intensity to maximize picture contrast.

Versatile, future-ready connections
The 32AV500U's audio/video connections include two HDMI digital inputs for connecting the growing number of HDMI-equipped components (Blu-ray players, HD cable and satellite receivers, etc.). A standard computer input makes it easy to connect your laptop PC so you can have a bigger view for working, gaming or web-surfing.

TV Features

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Cinespeed LCD Panel: Toshiba's Cinespeed LCD panel features a 10-bit video processor, 60Hz refresh rate and an 8ms or less response speed necessary for cleaner high-action home theater images. A wide viewing angle ensures that you'll have the best seat in the house

DynaLight Dynamic Back-Light Control: Toshiba's DynaLight Back-Light Control utilizes advanced imageprocessing to monitor the brightness of each video frame, and adjust the backlight intensity accordingly. This precision creates seamless transitions with deep blacks for increased detail and depth analysis.

Native Resolution: The LCD television displays all inputs at a resolution of 720p (1366 x 768). The HDMI inputs will accept  1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i, VGA, SVGA and XGA signals while the component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

CableClear DNR: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

Picture Size: When viewing a source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • TheaterWide 1: the picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen, used primarily with a 4:3 source
  • TheaterWide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged, used primarily with a letter box source
  • TheaterWide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller, used primarily with letter box programs with subtitles
  • Full: mainly designed for receiving a squeezed 4:3 signal (a 480i or 480p16:9 program squeezed into a 4:3 transmission), the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller, none of the picture is hidden

Auto Aspect Ratio: The Auto Aspect Ratio feature will automatically select the picture size when one of the following inputs sources is received - a 480i signal from the Video 1 and 2 inputs or a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i signal from the HDMI 1 and 2 inputs. The aspect ratio will automatically adjust as follows.

Aspect Ratio Of Signal Source Automatic Aspect Size Selected
4:3 normal Natural (with sidebars)
16:9 full Full

Note: When the TV cannot identify the aspect ratio of the signal source, the aspect ratio of the TV will be adjusted to your Picture Size selection in the TV's menu

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes for each input:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: lower contrast for a darkened room
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store contrast, back light, DynaLight, Dynamic Contrast, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness

Dynamic Contrast: When dynamic contrast is set to On, the TV will detect when changes in picture quality that affect the appearance of your contrast settings and adjust the video automatically.

Backlight Adjustment: The television features a Backlight Adjustment function which lets you adjust the TV's screen backlight for better visibility.

Color Temperature: You can change the quality of the picture by selecting from three preset color temperatures - Cool (blueish), Medium (neutral), or Warm (reddish). You can also adjust the levels of greens and blues in each preset temperature.

MPEG Noise Reduction: The MPEG noise reduction feature allows you to reduce visible interference caused by MPEG compression. You can choose High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Static Gamma Adjustment: The Static Gamma feature allows you to adjust the levels of black in the picture. The adjustment range is with +/-5 from center.

Favorite Browser: The Favorites Browser function allows you to quickly set up a favorite channels list so you can jump to a preferred channel easily.

Channel Return: The Channel Return feature allows you to switch between two channels without entering an actual channel number each time.

Channel Label: A list of common channel labels for various channels such as ABC, CBS, etc. are programmed into the TV. You are able to view and assign these logos to your incoming stations.

Closed Captions: The TVs closed caption mode has two options:

  • Captions: an on-screen display of the dialog, narration, and sound effects of TV programs and video that are closed captioned
  • Text: an on-screen display of information not related tot the current program, such as weather or stock data when provided by individual stations

Digital CC: You can customize the closed caption display characteristics by changing the background color, text size, type, edge, and color.

SoundStrip Speaker System: The SoundStrip Speaker System utilizes a thin-line speaker design with enhanced dynamic range. This eliminates the big round speakers, without losing any of the big home theater sound.

Audio Adjustments: The television features independent bass and treble controls that are adjustable from 0 to 20. The television's built-in speakers also can be balanced from left to right.

Mute: The TV mutes the volume half-way when the Mute button is pressed once on the remote; when pressed a second time the TV will mute the volume completely and when pressed a third time the volume will resume as normal.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 190 minutes or Off.

Parental Control: Some TV programs and movies include signals that classify the content of the program (violence, dialogue, language, etc). The V-Chip feature in this television detect the signals and blocks the programs according to the ratings you select. Your rating setting is protected by a custom-user 4-digit password.

Last Mode Memory: If the power is cut off while you are viewing the TV, the Last Mode Memory feature automatically turns on the TV when the power is re-supplied.

Note: You should unplug the TV's power cord if it is probable that you will be away from the TV for an extended period of time after the power is restored.

Auto Power Off: In ANT mode the TV will automatically turn itself off after approximately 15 minutes if it is turned to a vacant channel or a station that completes it broadcast for the day.

PC Compatible

PC Connection: You can view the image from your PC on the TV screen by the unit's 15-pin D-sub RGB input or HDMI 1 input. The television supports the following PC resolutions through its PC input.

  • VGA: 640 x 480 (60Hz)
  • SVGA: 800 x 600 (60Hz)
  • XGA: 1024 x 768 (60Hz)
  • WXGA: 1280 x 768 (60Hz) or 1360 x 768 (60Hz)

PC Settings: When your PC is connected to the TV's 15-pin D-sub RGB terminal, you can use the TV's PC Settings features to make adjustments to the image such as picture horizontal and vertical position, clock phase (helps reduce noise and sharpens picture) and sampling clock (helps reduce noise and minimize periodic vertical stripes on-screen).

PC Audio: This function allows you to output the sound from your PC through the TV's speakers via the PC stereo 3.5mm input on back of the TV.

Mounting Options

Pedestal Stand: The TV comes with a pedestal stand (assembly required). The pedestal stand attaches to the television using four supplied phillips-head screws. The stand adds approximately 1.375" to the height of the TV panel.

Wall Mounting: The TV has four threaded inserts on the back for use with an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 400 x 200 (400mm horizontal x 200mm vertical) in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The threaded inserts require M6 (6mm) machine screws (not supplied).

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on many other brand components; including cable boxes, satellite receivers, DVD players (including portables), VCRs, DVD/VCR combos, HTIBs (Home Theater In a Box), and TV/VCR combos.

Input and Output Notes

Dual HDMI Inputs: The two HDMI inputs consist of a single type-A connector HDMI jack. The HDMI jacks can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) from other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jacks are compliant with the E-EDID (Enhanced-Extended Display Identification) standards. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo 3.5mm audio input is provided for the HDMI 1 input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables. The HDMI 1 input can also be used to connect the TV to your PC along with the shared PC stereo 3.5mm audio jack.

Note: The HDMI inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i video signals. The HDMI inputs will support Linear PCM (sampling rate 32/44.1/48kHz) audio format.

RGB/PC Input: This connection allows you to view the image of a personal computer on the TV screen. When connecting the PC to the TV, you will need a 15-pin D-sub RGB computer cable and a PC audio cable. The PC input shares the same 3.5mm audio input as the HDMI 1 input.

Dual Component Video Inputs: The two ColorStream HD Component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a surround processor. The format can be set to Dolby Digital or PCM.

TV only lasts 1.2 Years

Written By homer, Charleston SC on Thursday, February 04, 2010

TV seemed like it was a great TV for the money but 3 months after the warranty expired it no longer produces a picture. The repair estimate is $275. I am shopping for a new TV now and decided to let everyone know about the Toshiba.

Don't buy this TV

Written By Leslie, Gulfport, MS on Thursday, December 17, 2009

After owning this TV for 1 and a half years, (6 months out of warranty) I find that the inverter has gone bad on this TV. It is a $200.00 part and too cost prohibitive to repair. I googled this TV and have found numerous other people who have had the same problem.

Good Deal

Written By rich, Des Plaines, IL on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Great television, outstanding picture and sound. Need to get a good HD antenna, but I checked HD picture with my antenna for my other HD TV and picture was crystal clear! Own another 32" tube Toshiba (13 years old) and it's been trouble free. Great price, and no shipping, can't beat it!

This is a Beautiful HDTV

Written By Jay, Papillion, NE on Monday, July 07, 2008

For the money, this TV is very hard to beat. I am using it in the dining room/kitchen area and the picture looks very good. I have not noticed any loss in picture quality at various viewing angles. This Toshiba is bright enough that it is not bothered with ambient light and of course with the LCD there is no glare. With two HDMI inputs it could handle your Blu-Ray player and your HDTV satellite connection if need be. I am getting my HDTV free over the air, with the use of some $20.00 rabbit ears and a short coax cable. The tuner on this Toshiba picks up the ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, & PBS Digital/HDTV local affiliates. I am also using this HDTV as a computer monitor at times. With its VGA input you can simply plug in your laptop and enjoy surfing the net and streaming videos on a 32"screen. I thought about spending about a few hundred dollars more and getting a 1080p. Then I found out that very few, if any stations broadcast or are planning to broadcast in so called full, 1080p in the near future. One final note is that this TV looks great off too, with its polished black piano finish. Thanks again to all the folks at Crutchfield that helped me make it happen!

Excellent TV for the price!!

Written By Todd, Hemet,CA on Thursday, June 05, 2008

This Toshiba is an excellent TV for the price, setup is easy, the picture is
very clear and sharp, the colors are sharp, and the speakers are very clear
and loud. I also use this TV as a monitor for my laptop to watch videos and
i'm extremely pleased with the picture and sound. The only problem with
this TV is the tuner is slow when switching channels, there is a one to two
second lag when switching channels, this is not much of an issue for me
since i don't flip channels frequently, this is the only reason i didn't give this
TV five stars. This is a very beautiful TV and is even better looking in person
than in the pictures. I highly recommend this quality TV.

Great TV

Written By Henry, Barryville, NY on Thursday, March 27, 2008

This is a great TV and reasonably priced. Set-up was easy and the picture is great after some tweaking. The sound is okay. It's a second TV in a bedroom so I don't need window rattling sound. The only problem I have with it is the Manual Channel Set-up. Here you can set whether a channel is displayed or not. I set a number of channels not to be displayed. I surf through the channels after setting and everything is okay, go back through the channels again and a couple that I set not to display, display. Frustrating. I went through this procedure a number of times with the same results.
