Our take on the Toshiba 32AV502U

Looking for a great deal on an HDTV? Skip the no-name brands and check out the Toshiba 32AV502U. Toshiba TVs consistently receive high marks from reviewers for their wide viewing angles and smooth motion handling, and the 32AV502U offers great performance at a budget-friendly price. You'll enjoy a vivid high-def picture, thanks to a high-quality LCD panel and advanced video processing. The DynaLight system monitors the brightness level of each video frame and adjusts backlight intensity to maximize picture contrast.

One of the best reasons to upgrade to an HDTV is the upcoming switch to digital broadcasting. The 32AV502U boasts tuners to pull in all types of local over-the-air broadcasts, from ordinary analog to digital high-def (antenna required). And a "QAM" tuner enables cable TV subscribers to watch unscrambled channels — including local network HD channels in many areas — without the hassle and expense of a set-top box.

TV Features

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Cinespeed LCD Panel: Toshiba's REGZA Premium LCD Hi-Speed Cinespeed panels offers a refresh rate of 60 Hz and fast response times of 8ms or faster for an ultra sharp picture, especially when displaying fast-moving action scenes, and demanding video games. A wide 176-degree viewing angle ensures that you can enjoy this TV from any seat in your room.

DynaLight Dynamic Back-Light Control: Toshiba's DynaLight Back-Light Control utilizes advanced image processing to monitor the brightness of each video frame, and adjust the backlight intensity accordingly. This precision creates seamless transitions with deep blacks for increased detail and depth analysis.

Native Resolution: The LCD television displays all inputs at a resolution of 720p (1366 x 768). The HDMI inputs will accept  1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i, VGA, SVGA and XGA signals while the component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

CableClear DNR: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

Picture Size: When viewing a source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • TheaterWide 1: the picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen, used primarily with a 4:3 source
  • TheaterWide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged, used primarily with a letter box source
  • TheaterWide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller, used primarily with letter box programs with subtitles
  • Full: mainly designed for receiving a squeezed 4:3 signal (a 480i or 480p16:9 program squeezed into a 4:3 transmission), the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller, none of the picture is hidden
  • 4:3 HD: provides a 4:3 aspect ratio of a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal; sidebars fill the empty vertical spaces while not distorting the picture from its original size
  • Native: when receiving a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal program, Native Mode restores the size of the picture by the 3-5% that is generally lost during the normal over-scanning that occurs on traditional sets. It also avoids unnecessary scaling of HD signals that can reduce overall image resolution and picture quality.
  • Dot-by-Dot: non-scaling display for VGA, SVGA, XGA, WXGA and SXGA sources only

TheaterWide Scrolling: You can set separate scroll settings for the Theater Wide 2 and TheaterWide 3 modes for each input. You can adjust the scroll of the picture up and down as needed form -10 to +20.

Auto Aspect: When the auto aspect feature is turned on and the TV receives a 480i signal, the picture size is automatically selected; a 4:3 signal is set to Natural, a 16:9 signal is set to Full, a 4:3 letterbox signal is set to Theater Wide 2. If the signal's aspect is not defined, the Picture Size defaults to the last manually chosen setting.

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes for each input:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: lower contrast for a darkened room
  • PC: designed for viewing of PC tables and documents
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store contrast, backlight, DynaLight, Dynamic Contrast, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness

Dynamic Contrast: When dynamic contrast is set to On, the TV will detect when changes in picture quality that affect the appearance of your contrast settings and adjust the video automatically.

Backlight Adjustment: The television features a Backlight Adjustment function which lets you adjust the TV's screen backlight for better visibility.

Color Temperature: You can change the quality of the picture by selecting from three preset color temperatures - Cool (blueish), Medium (neutral), or Warm (reddish). You can also adjust the levels of greens and blues in each preset temperature.

Cinema Mode: When viewing a DVD (3:2 pulldown processed) from a DVD player connected to the composite, S-video, component, or HDMI inputs on the TV, smoother motion can be obtained by setting the Cinema Mode to Film instead of Video (available for 480i and 1080i signals.

Game Mode: You can use the Game Mode feature for shorter frame delays when playing a video game requiring split-second timing between the on-screen display and input from the controller such as music creation and high-action games. This feature is more effective for 480i and 1080 input signals.

MPEG Noise Reduction: The MPEG noise reduction feature allows you to reduce visible interference caused by MPEG compression. You can choose High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Static Gamma Adjustment: The Static Gamma feature allows you to adjust the levels of black in the picture. The adjustment range is with +/-5 from center.

Channel Browser: The Channel Browser allows you to browse and view channels by storing your recently viewed channels in channel history. You can surf back to channels you viewed prior to your current channel, and surf forward from previous channels up to your current channel. Up to 32 previously viewed channels can be stored in history. You can set a Home source for an Ant 1 channel or TV input.

Favorite Browser: The Favorites Browser function allows you to quickly set up a favorite channels list so you can jump to a preferred channel easily.

Channel Return: The Channel Return feature allows you to switch between two channels without entering an actual channel number each time.

SurfLock: The SurfLock feature temporarily memorizes one channel under the Channel Return button, so you can return to that channel quickly from any other channel.

Channel Label: A list of common channel labels for various channels such as ABC, CBS, etc. are programmed into the TV. You are able to view and assign these logos to your incoming stations.

Input Label: You can label each video input source according to the type of device you connected to each source, from the following preset list of labels - Audio Receiver, Cable, Compact Disc, DTV, DVD, Game Console, HDMI Switch, Laser Disc, Satellite/DSS, VCR, Video Recorder or Hide (hides an unused preset). The PC Input can only be labeled Game Console or hidden.

Closed Captions: The TVs closed caption mode has two options:

  • Captions: an on-screen display of the dialog, narration, and sound effects of TV programs and video that are closed captioned
  • Text: an on-screen display of information not related tot the current program, such as weather or stock data when provided by individual stations

Digital CC: You can customize the closed caption display characteristics by changing the background color, text size, type, edge, and color.

SoundStrip Speaker System: The SoundStrip Speaker System utilizes a thin-line speaker design with enhanced dynamic range. This eliminates the big round speakers, without losing any of the big home theater sound.

Audio Adjustments: The television features independent bass and treble controls that are adjustable from 0 to 20. The television's built-in speakers also can be balanced from left to right.

Dynamic Range Control: This dynamic range control feature causes the ATSC dynamic range to be further compressed, allowing you to switch from ATSC to analog broadcasts at the same dynamic range.

Mute: The TV mutes the volume half-way when the Mute button is pressed once on the remote; when pressed a second time the TV will mute the volume completely and when pressed a third time the volume will resume as normal.

Parental Control: Some TV programs and movies include signals that classify the content of the program (violence, dialogue, language, etc). The V-Chip feature in this television detect the signals and blocks the programs according to the ratings you select. Your rating setting is protected by a custom-user 4-digit password.

Input Lock: You can sue the Input Lock feature to lock the video inputs (Video, Component, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and PC) and channels 3 and 4. You will not be able to view the input sources or channels until you unlock the inputs.

Control Panel Lock: You can lock the control panel to prevent your settings from being changed accidentally.

GameTimer: You can use the GameTimer to set a time limit for playing a video game from 30 to 120 minutes. When the GameTimer expires, the TV enters Input Lock mode and locks out the input source for the video game device.

Sleep Timer: You can set the sleep timer to turn off the television after a set length of time between 10 minutes and 180 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Last Mode Memory: If the power is cut off while you are viewing the TV, the Last Mode Memory feature automatically turns on the TV when the power is re-supplied.

Note: You should unplug the TV's power cord if it is probable that you will be away from the TV for an extended period of time after the power is restored.

Auto Power Off: In ANT mode the TV will automatically turn itself off after approximately 15 minutes if it is turned to a vacant channel or a station that completes it broadcast for the day.

PC Compatible

PC Connection: You can view the image from your PC on the TV screen by the unit's 15-pin D-sub RGB input or HDMI 1 input. The television supports the following PC resolutions through its PC input.

  • VGA: 640 x 480 (60Hz)
  • SVGA: 800 x 600 (60Hz)
  • XGA: 1024 x 768 (60Hz)
  • WXGA: 1280 x 768 (60Hz) or 1360 x 768 (60Hz)

PC Settings: When your PC is connected to the TV's 15-pin D-sub RGB terminal, you can use the TV's PC Settings features to make adjustments to the image such as picture horizontal and vertical position, clock phase (helps reduce noise and sharpens picture) and sampling clock (helps reduce noise and minimize periodic vertical stripes on-screen).

PC Audio: This function allows you to output the sound from your PC through the TV's speakers via the PC stereo 3.5mm input on back of the TV.

Mounting Options

Pedestal Stand: The TV comes with a pedestal stand (assembly required). The pedestal stand attaches to the television using four supplied phillips-head machine screws.

Wall Mounting: The TV has four threaded inserts on the back for use with an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 400 x 200 (400mm horizontal x 200mm vertical) in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The threaded inserts require M6 (6mm) machine screws (not supplied).

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on many other brand components; including cable boxes, satellite receivers, DVD players (including portables), VCRs, DVD/VCR combos, HTIBs (Home Theater In a Box), and TV/VCR combos.

Input and Output Notes

Dual HDMI Inputs: The two HDMI inputs consist of a single type-A connector HDMI jack. The HDMI jacks can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) from other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jacks are compliant with the E-EDID (Enhanced-Extended Display Identification) standards. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo 3.5mm audio input is provided for the HDMI 1 input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables. The HDMI 1 input can also be used to connect the TV to your PC along with the shared PC stereo 3.5mm audio jack.

Note: The HDMI inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i video signals. The HDMI inputs will support Linear PCM (sampling rate 32/44.1/48kHz) audio format.

RGB/PC Input: This connection allows you to view the image of a personal computer on the TV screen. When connecting the PC to the TV, you will need a 15-pin D-sub RGB computer cable and a PC audio cable. The PC input shares the same 3.5mm audio input as the HDMI 1 input.

Dual Component Video Inputs: The two ColorStream HD Component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a surround processor. The format can be set to Dolby Digital or PCM.
