Our take on the Toshiba 46LX177

Last year, Toshiba's Cinema Series LCDs were among the best-looking flat-panel HDTVs around. Remarkably, their 2007 Cinema models are better in every way. The 46" 46LX177 is aimed at videophiles who demand superb image quality. This TV is packed with cutting-edge display technologies that work together to deliver a beautifully balanced picture at all times and with all sources.

1080p resolution for maximum high-definition detail
Most high-definition programs are in 1080i, and the only way to see all of the details in a 1080i signal is with a 1080p display like this one. It's that simple. The 46LX177's built-in tuners pull in all types of local over-the-air broadcasts, from ordinary analog to digital high-definition (antenna required). And a "QAM" tuner lets cable TV subscribers tune in unscrambled digital cable channels, including HD, where available.

Fast refresh rate eliminates motion blur
High resolution is critical for superb picture clarity, and so is accurate motion handling. LCD TVs have improved their motion handling in recent years by speeding up the "pixel response time." Along with fast response time, Toshiba attacks the problem of blurring with their ClearFrame™ 120Hz display technology. This system allows the 46LX177 to display 120 frames of video per second, instead of the standard 60 frames. Moving objects on screen look smoother, clearer and more natural — especially fast-action sports.

Versatile inputs let you experience the best sources available
The generous array of audio/video connections includes two HD-capable component video jacks, plus three HDMI digital inputs for use with the growing number of HDMI-equipped components (like HD satellite receivers and upconverting DVD players). These days, a growing number of HDTVs can display 1080p video, but not all of them accept 1080p signals. That's an important distinction, especially if you're considering adding a high-definition disc player.

TV Features

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Full HD Resolution: The 46LX177 displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The 3 HDMI inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i and VGA signals while the component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

ClearFrame: The advanced ClearFrame system virtually eliminates motion blur without decreasing image brightness or adding flicker and produces crisp, clear images regardless of image motion. ClearFrame doubles the displayed frame rated to 120 frames per second or 120 Hz. The system utilizes superior Motion Vector Frame Interpolation (MVFI) technology which utilizes the power of the TV's built-in PixelPure processor and creates new frames, inserting them between the original frames giving you crystal clear video.

Cinespeed: Toshiba's REGZA Premium LCD Hi-Speed Cinespeed panels offer fast response times of 8ms or faster for an ultra sharp picture, especially when displaying fast-moving action scenes, and demanding video games. A wide 176-degree viewing angle ensures that you can enjoy this TV from any seat in your room.

PixelPure 3G 14-Bit Digital Video Processing: Toshiba's 3rd generation PixelPure video processing system uses a 14-bit video DAC and constantly monitors changes in signal quality, content, and movement to enhance sharpness, contrast, and color reproduction. This advanced third-generation digital video processing system runs at a fast 333Mhz and is capable of producing 4,096 levels of gradation (16 times greater than a standard 8-bit processor) for a smooth, natural-looking picture without image banding.

DynaLight Dynamic Back-Light Control: Toshiba's DynaLight Technology monitors the brightness level of each video frame, and automatically adjusts the backlight intensity based on the image content. Precise signal analysis offers 256 levels of backlight intensity. This creates dynamic contrast up to 5X that of the original panel contrast, resulting in a deeper black level that increases detail and depth, even in low light environments.

ColorBurst: ColorBurst utilizes enhanced CCFL back-light technology to expand the TV's color range to 90%+ of the NTSC color gamut. This significantly improves both color purity and color saturation, and combined with superior processing and a superior back-light, creates colors that are vibrant and natural.

CableClear DNR: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

CE-Link: CE-Link allows you to control the basic functions of HDMI connected Toshiba CE-Link compatible audio/video devices using the TV's remote control for simpler operation of your system.

Picture Size: When viewing a source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • Theater Wide 1: the picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen, used primarily with a 4:3 source
  • Theater Wide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged, used primarily with a widescreen source
  • Theater Wide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller
  • Full: mainly designed for receiving a squeezed 4:3 signal (a 16:9 [480i, 480p] programs squeezed into a 4:3 transmission), the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller, none of the picture is hidden
  • 4:3 HD: provides a 4:3 aspect ratio of a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal; sidebars fill the empty vertical spaces while not distorting the picture from its original size
  • Native: when receiving a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal program, Native Mode restores the size of the picture by the 3-5% that is generally lost during the normal over-scanning that occurs on traditional sets. It also avoids unnecessary scaling of HD signals that can reduce overall image resolution and picture quality.

TheaterWide Scrolling: You can set separate scroll settings for the Theater Wide 2 and TheaterWide 3 modes for each input. You can adjust the scroll of the picture up and down as needed form -10 to +20.

Auto Aspect Ratio: The Auto Aspect Ratio feature will automatically select the picture size when one of the following inputs sources is received - a 480i signal from the Video 1 or 2 inputs or the Component Video 1 or 2 inputs or a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or VGA signal from any of the HDMI inputs. The aspect ratio will automatically adjust as follows.

Aspect Ratio Of Signal Source Automatic Aspect Size Selected
4:3 normal Natural (with sidebars)
4:3 letter box TheaterWide 2
16:9 full Full

Note: When the TV cannot identify the aspect ratio of the signal source, the aspect ratio of the TV will be adjusted to your "Picture Size" selection in the TV's menu

Cinema Mode: When you view a DVD (3:2 pulldown processed) from a DVD player connected to the Video 1/2, Component Video 1/2, or any of the HDMI inputs on the TV, smoother motion can be obtained by setting the Cinema Mode to Film from Video.

Film Stabilization: This feature helps eliminate video shaking that can occur during Film Mode.

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes for each input:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: lower contrast for a darkened room
  • Document: designed for viewing of table/documents from a PC
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store contrast, back light, DynaLight, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness
  • Pro 1: custom settings based on Standard mode
  • Pro 2: custom settings base on Movie mode

TheaterLock: The TheaterLock feature allows you to lock all items that affect the picture mode setting to help prevent anyone from changing your settings.

Color Temperature: You can change the quality of the picture by selecting from three preset color temperatures - Cool (bluish), Medium (neutral), or Warm (reddish). You can also adjust the levels of greens and blues in each preset temperature.

ColorMaster Pro: The ColorMaster Pro feature allows you to adjust standard colors as well a create 3 custom user colors.  ColorMaster Pro adjusts hue, saturation, and color brightness of six different preset colors (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Magenta, Cyan) and 3 custom user colors to create picture quality your way. This provides deep, natural colors for increased depth and realism.

Dynamic Contrast: When dynamic contrast is set to Low, Middle or High, the TV will detect when changes in picture quality that affect the appearance of your contrast settings and adjust the video automatically.

Deep Color: This feature allows an HDMI source to increase available color bits within the boundaries defined by the RGB or YCbCr color spacing providing you with a deep, richer color gamete.

Vertical Edge Enhancer: The Vertical Edge Enhancer feature strengthens video contour. You can select from Low, Middle, High or Off for this feature.

MPEG Noise Reduction: The MPEG noise reduction feature allows you to reduce visible interference caused by MPEG compression. You can choose High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Static Gamma Adjustment: The Static Gamma feature allows you to adjust the levels of black in the picture. The adjustment range is with +/-5 from center.

Game Mode: When playing a video game requiring split-second timing (high-action games, music creation, etc.), the Game Mode shortens the frame delays between the on-screen display and the input from the controller. This mode if more effective for 480i and 1080 input signals.

Note: The Game Mode can only be used on the Video 1, Video 2, Component Video 1, Component Video 2, or HDMI inputs.

Channel Browser: The Channel Browser allows you to browse and view channels by storing your recently viewed channels in channel history. You can surf back to channels you viewed prior to your current channel, and surf forward from previous channels up to your current channel. Toshiba 46LX177

Written By Lookingaround, Washington DC on Thursday, October 25, 2007

This TV is great- no complaints here.

Anyway- trust me- the TV is well worth your money. The colors are amazing on the set-- no green here whatever. However- do keep in mind that you need to adjust the TV out of the box-- it is not an easy task since there are so many controls. So if you are a videophile- you'll love it.

I got a great price on this, and it's awesome. I bought a new ps3 and now to get bluray! i do not feel there is any green issue on my set.

A big disappointment

Written By Greenie, Seattle, WA on Thursday, September 13, 2007

I purchased this tv a couple months back. Immediately there was a problem. The set was GREEN. I mean everything was green. I called Toshiba, and they had a tech look at it, and the tech took it back to their shop. Two weeks later, it was finally back in my house. They said there was some broken parts and it was fixed. I turned it on, and although the green was better, it was still there. Called Toshiba, and they eventually exchanged my set. The new one is green. Come to figure out that a large number of these sets have this problem. Now they plan on sending out another tech, instead of giving my money back, or exchanging again, so I am at square one. Please investigate these tv's further before purchasing. So for now, I am stuck. Don't let this happen to you.
