Aiwa

Our take on the Aiwa CDC-X504MP

Are you a digital music fanatic? The CDC-X504MP handles your MP3 collection with ease! It plays MP3 files on CD-R or CD-RW, and (since so many files can fit on one disc) you can store all your favorite songs on a disc to leave in the car.

Aiwa gives you the tools to make your music sound great. Select from seven preset tone curves for a quick sound adjustment, or use the 3-band equalizer to create a custom curve. Aiwa's H-Bass enhances the bottom end to keep bass-lovers happy.

Making adjustments to the CDC-X504MP is a snap, thanks to a handy remote. The CD receiver's blue display and button illumination give the silver faceplate a nice glow in your dash. A dimmer control makes it easy to see the display during the day, without it being too bright at night. A handy auxiliary input on the faceplate lets you connect a portable music player.

Our Product Research Team

At Crutchfield, you'll get detailed, accurate information that's hard to find elsewhere. We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices.

Features

MP3 Compatibility: The CDC-X504MP can play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM discs. The discs must be recorded in ISO 9660 Level 1 or 2, Romeo, or Joliet formats. Recorded MP3 ID Tags are also displayed on the unit's front panel display. (No compatible bit rate information is provided.)

DSSA: You can adjust the sound stage and tone balance to best serve a particular seat in the vehicle using the Driver's Sound Stage Adjustment (DSSA). The DSSA control is preset for the front left or front right seat. Once you have chosen a particular seat setting, you can further manually adjust the balance and fader settings.

Front Panel Aux Input: The CDC-X504MP features a 1/8" stereo mini-jack on the front panel to allow you to connect a portable cassette, Minidisc, or MP3 player. The volume of the connected auxiliary source unit can be controlled by the receiver.

Switchable Rear Preouts: This unit has one pair of preamp outputs which can be switched between "Rear" and "Subwoofer." When the preouts are switched to "Subwoofer" they are not affected by the fader control, plus you can independently select the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter (78Hz, 125Hz, or Off), and adjust the volume of the subwoofer (+10 to -10 and Attenuate).

H-Bass: Instead of a loudness control, this unit is equipped with an H-Bass function. Conventional bass boost circuits also affect the mid-bass and midrange, resulting in a muddy, "boomy" sound. H-Bass provides true deep bass enhancement for a dynamic bottom end that does not destroy the clarity of vocals and other mid-frequency content. H-Bass enhancement can be switched on or off, and does not affect the preamp output signal when it is switched to "Sub."

Equalizer: The receiver has 7 preset equalizer curves for different music types: Hip-Hop, Vocal, Club, Jazz, Pops, Rock, and Custom. Once you have selected a preset EQ curve, you can further adjust the low (60Hz), mid (1kHz), and high (10kHz) bands from -10 to +10dB.

Source Level Adjuster: The relative level of each source (FM/AM/CD/AUX) may be adjusted, from -6dB to +6dB in 1dB steps, and the setting will be retained in memory. The level of each source can be set so there won't be drastic leaps in volume when changing from one source to another.

Dimmer: You can lower the brightness of the display and button illumination by switching on the dimmer in the menu. The dimmer function is controlled manually, and is not affected by the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Remote Control: The CDC-X504MP is equipped with a wireless remote control (RM-Z304). With the remote, you can control the following functions:

  • Power
  • Volume
  • Source
  • Display
  • Seek Tuning +/-
  • Track Skip (MP3 File Skip)
  • Radio Presets (MP3 Folder Skip)
  • Fast forward/reverse search (CD/MP3)
  • Attenuate

A Lot Of Bang For The Buck!

Written By Pistol Pete, Houston, Tx. on Wednesday, February 09, 2005

I bought one of these back in august of 2004. This has been the best head unit I've heard. with the option of selecting your preffered db on the sub output, it provides the right sound for the right music. People that have spent three times what I did are impressed by the unit's performance. the remote is simple and functional, but sensitivity on the IR eye could use some work. Overall I'm impressed with this one and it's lasted through two vehicles. It's a keeper!

Great Unit for MP3 Players!

Written By Roy, LA, CA on Sunday, February 20, 2005

I received a 5GB mp3 player for Christmas; wanted to be able to play it in my car. Car had in-dash cd player with no cassette. So cassette adaptor was out. Tried the FM modulator method: that sucked; static and interference. Ran across this Awai unit with aux. input in the front. WALLA! MP3 player works great with shielded cable into aux input. No more cd's in the car, and no monthly satellite bill!
This is a great unit for the price!

Great for my Truck!

Written By David, Cedar Rapids, IA on Thursday, March 03, 2005

I replaced the factory radio with this one because after putting in new speakers the factory radio just didn't drive them enough. I have had this unit for about 6 mths now and enjoy it as much as I did when I had it installed. It does a good job playing anything I put in it. It has a good frequency range and even with out an amp attached drowns out the "pimped" cars thump, thump, thumping around in my town. I got it mainly because it has an aux in the front and I can play my old tapes or hook up other components.

I bought this and use it in EXTREME conditions: a lot of dust, very very bad roads, powering four 5" sepakers and using medium quality mp3 cd, so i can put 100+ songs. This is because ther is NO radio stations signal there. It works perfectly, the sound quality is good for the price and the anti-skip feature REALLY works. If you want a simple mp3 HU, this is a good choice

I've Just recently Purchased this device from crutchfield it came quickly and i got it installed in about an hour. I did have a small problem with the Deck However. I burned a full MP3 cd and popped it in and the first few tracks were fine. the further i went on the cd the more it would skip. I used Roxio Cd Creator and burned it Joilet CDROM. so, i decided to try another feature, ISO9660 works just fine w/out skipping from what i can tell. and also Joilet + CDROM/XA works good to. So maybe it's just the burner, or the format. The only thing this player works is the ability to walk around the songs quicker. you have to go 1 by 1 as far as i can tell.

Decent Features; poor sound quality

I liked the features but the sound was so bad I could only listen to it at low volumes. I do not believe the listed power rating.

As a security feature it beeps 3 times every time the vechicle is turned off to remind you to remove the faceplate. I found this annoying, and could not disable the feature. [Editor's note: if you use this unit with an outboard amp, and do not use the built-in amplifier, the warning beep will be disabled.]

I recommend going with recievers with 'CEA-2006 compliant' amplifiers. This ensures the reciever meets specific rating guidelines at the published wattage.

An important feature for me besides sound was a front AUX port. I exchanged for a JVC Arsenal KD-AR560 which also has the front port. I am very glad I did. Crisp clean sound at low or high levels and a good feature set.

A caution to iTunes users... iTunes organizes your music into folders based on 1.) Artist, 2.) Album, and 3.) Track # and title (if track # is selected)
-----If you make a compilation MP3 disc with songs from more than 50 different albums, this MP3 player will only recognize the first 50 folders, so if you burn a disc with 150 tracks, but each track is from a different album, the AIWA deck will only show 50 tracks on the disc.
-----Be careful, and look for MP3 players that will accept at least 150 folders!!!

I Purchased This Receiver And The Volume Control knob didn't work properly shortly after the warranty ran out. Fortnately it doesn't ever go up in volume just down. I now have to use the remote to adjust volume. Other than volume knob it is a good system. I will never buy another receiver w/ a volume knob. I will choose buttons instead.

Skipped Like an 8-Year-Old Going to Sunday School

This receiver seems like a great value for the price, considering its specs. Shares the highest signal-to-noise ratio with the other Sonys, its FM sensitivity is only bested by the Pioneers', and the internal amp is supposedly stout, with 23.2 watts RMS per channel. It even includes an equalizer and remote. The display was easy to read day and night, and the buttons are fairly simple and understandable. This unit replaced a Pioneer DEH-45DH, an old model with no MP3 capability. It sounded muddy, it was a PITA to operate, but it had one thing on the Aiwa that is commendable; It would almost never skip. I think it skipped maybe 3 times in the year I have had it in the car. The Aiwa, on the other hand, skipped horribly. It was intermittent too, I would go to work and back one day, and it would not skip at all. The next day, I would go to work and every single road imperfection would set it skipping. It was especially sensitive to acceleration/deceleration on the bad days. Every stop sign, light, etc, it would skip. Sometimes I would hit a few consecutive bumps and set it skipping, and it would continue to skip after the road smoothed out for 10-20 seconds after. The disks were not perfect, but they never skipped in the Pioneer, and they skipped in random places on the Aiwa. Crutchfield tech support was great though. They advance returned me a second unit, which I installed last night. It had the same problem! Tech support believes that both units are bad, but they pointed out that even if a third unit worked fine, it may have the same problem shortly after it is off warranty. I am upgrading to the Alpine CDA-9833, an awesome unit for $300.
