Our take on the Valor NVG-606W

Valor's NVG-606W DVD receiver plays music from almost any source — this double-sized receiver features an SD card reader, USB input, and a front-panel audio/video input. The NVG-606W also plays DVDs and CDs, including discs you've loaded with MP3 files. iPod® controls are built in, and a connection cable is included so you can enjoy your favorite playlists when you're driving.

The 6.5" touchscreen display helps you find your way through all of these source options. You can check out song and artist information on the large screen, and use the helpful menus to make all your system adjustments. Park the car, and take in your favorite videos and movies up front. If you're on the go, connect optional monitors to the two sets of audio/video outputs and pipe the show to your passengers in the back. For more entertainment variety, an A/V input lets you connect other video sources, like a gaming system.

The easy-to-read screen complements the NVG-606W's built-in navigation system, giving you a clear look at driving directions, so you'll stay relaxed behind the wheel when you're driving. It features maps of North America that'll keep you on course whether you're traveling to Sacramento or Saskatoon.

General Features

2-DIN Chassis: The NVG-606W has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. Unlike many in-dash monitors, there is no hideaway box; all the inputs and outputs are included within the unit's chassis. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

6.5" Touch-Screen LCD Monitor: The NVG-606W double-DIN DVD receiver features a 6.5" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 touch-screen LCD display with an adjustable viewing angle. The resolution of the display is 1200 x 234 for a total of 280,800 pixels. The screen has a 120° horizontal viewing angle (60° left or right), and a 90° vertical viewing angle (30° up and 60° down). The unit's double-DIN face is fixed. The DVD-slot is front-loading and sits above the screen so there is no extra step to slide-out the face to insert a disc.

Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the displays brightness, sharpness, color, contrast and tint from 0 to +20.

AM/FM Tuner: The Valor NVG-606W features a built-in AM/FM tuner with up to 48 station presets. The unit features 3 FM bands and 1 AM band which can hold 12 radio stations each. The preset stations can be entered manually or automatically. Once your preset stations are set you can easily scan through only your preset stations.

Audio Controls: The Audio Menu allows you to adjust the following:

  • Preset EQ: The receiver's EQ features the following preset selections - Flat, Jazz, Pop, Classical, or User.
  • Selectable Bass and Treble: The User mode lets you independently adjust between -7 and +7. You can set the center frequency for both the bass and treble effects. The bass can be set to 60, 80, 100, 130, 150, or 200 Hz. The treble can be set to 10, 12.5, 15, and 17kHz.
  • Fade and Balance: You can individually adjust between -9 and +9 for the unit's Fade and Balance.
  • Subwoofer Adjustment: The cutoff frequency for the subwoofer output's low pass filter can be set to 80, 120, or 160Hz. The Q Factor can also be set to 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0. In addition, the phase of the subwoofer can be switched from 0-degrees to 180-degrees.
  • Loudness: You can turn the Loudness function on to boost treble and bass frequencies at low volume levels.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power for more than 40 seconds.

Remote Control: The unit comes with a 40-button wireless remote control with a numeric keypad for direct access of chapters, tracks, and preset stations.

Good Bang For The Buck

Written By Josh, Rock Hill, SC on Tuesday, September 07, 2010

I bought this unit earlier this year. It was the cheapest stereo that has GPS built in. It works well enough for my needs.

That being said, it does have some annoyances. First, a lot of MP3s I load will not play. And I haven't been able to play any 320 kpbs MP3 at all. The only encoder that is consistent is Lame.

A very annoying thing is that it will not play video or show pictures unless your car is parked and the parking brake has been pulled. Well, my car does not have a parking brake wire to signal the radio. Therefore, I cannot play DVDs at all with this unit.

The GPS is annoying. It is difficult to enter destinations and sometimes it does not have entire towns in its database (or at least I can't find them). On a couple occasions, the voice stutters so badly, you can't understand what is being said. It also tells you to keep going straight for no reason. Also, there is no way to control the relative volume of the voice compared to your music. While driving, it lowers to volume of the music and starts talking. The problem is, it can almost give you a heart attack because the voice can be much louder than the music.

This stereo would benefit greatly if they licensed the GPS software from Garmin or Tom Tom. Also, they should fix the incompatibility problem with MP3s. Overall, it's not a bad stereo. But knowing what I know now, I think I would spend a little extra money to buy a more refined stereo.

Bad Navigation, Bad Radio, Nice DVD

Written By Chris, San Jose, CA on Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Quick review: Don't buy it, you'll regret it.... for more info read on:

I owned this Valor for 4 weeks before it was stolen... but I was actually happy that I was getting insurance money cuz now I get to replace it with something else.

The navigation is horrible, it randomly displays street names... it doesn't list out the major streets coming up... but it will list random residential streets that you dont care about. When it has to re-calculate a route, it freezes half the time. The turn by turn voice is embarrassing... most people laughed at it. HORRIBLE.

The radio had horrible reception... it much 10 times better on my stock radio (but then again maybe crutchfield gave me a faulty antenna adapter).

It took a long time for it to turn on when you start the car... about 10 seconds.

Would freeze up a lot when you try to quickly switch between NAV, radio, CD, etc menus.

No brightness options... and at night it was sometimes so bright, it was very distracting.

USB does nothing except charge your phone/mp3 player.

SD slot is useless because it holds the map.

Only good thing about this product was the CD/DVD player. Excellent video quality.

Buy Something Else

Written By Andrew, Oklahoma on Thursday, October 15, 2009

I just bought this Valor NVG-606w NAV unit and had it installed professionally at a local installation center.

At first it seemed to work. The navigation initiallized and I was able to enter an address, etc. It gave me a route, etc. The voice sounded very ROBOTIC, however. My portable Garmin unit has much better Voice than this. Mine seemed like a REAL person. This Valor's voice sounded like a Robot. Anyway, everything seemed okay. Then I turned it off and turned off the engine. Then everything went downhill.

On the following power-up, which was an hour later, the Valor said, "Can't Find Navigation System".

I tried the Menu and touched the "SD Card", and it said "Bad Card". I took the card and tried it on my PCs (one is Vista, one is Windows XP). My PCs read the card just fine. I then tried other 1GB SD cards on my XP PC. The Valor just said "Bad Card" even though my PCs read them just fine.

The AM/FM radio worked.

The USB worked, but only with my 4GB USB flash drive, not with my 32GB USB.

Conclusion: You get what you pay for. If you buy this cheap product, you get a cheap unreliable product. Even if it works today, it may not work tomorrow. Please save yourself the headaches and a lot of Tylenol and Valium (just J/K). But seriously, just get the higher quality units from Kenwood, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc. They may cost $1,000 or more, but at least they work and are more reliable.

Thought it was great...not really...

Written By Teddy, Monahans, Tx on Saturday, August 08, 2009

I bought this receiver 2 weeks ago and when first opened I was somewhat dissappointed. Installation was easy and the setup was fairly simple but I couldn't use the USB, the SD, nor the GPS until I was given an activation code from Valor. Thus meaning I was stereoless until the next monday, BUMMER. Finally after receiving the code I drove and enjoyed the new GPS that had been unlocked. Everything was going great until I really started to toy with the thing and then problems arose. First the USB port never worked for me, IPOD capablitiy is non-existent unless you want to purchase an extension or drill through your interior, and the worst problem of it all is that even though the unit gives the option and the cables to hook up and AUDIO and VIDEO addition, IT DOESN"T. The cables are just for show and Valor themselves couldn't explain to me why they spent useless money on cables if they are never going to be used. Don't expect to be able to send a movie to the rear monitor like said because you will be musicless... Bright side Crutchfield is so awesome they are sending me a new unit, the Dual, I've got high hopes!

Great unit

Written By Mike, san diego on Wednesday, August 05, 2009

Installed easily though you must call to activate the gps, hopefully you get it done during there business hours. With the gps in 3d view its very very slow, menus are very slow, touchscreen is very slow, gps view is very slow. On any other view it runs normal speed, the gps voice will mute front speakers to for the voice to playover, but rear speakers still play the music. Thats a nice feature.

Dont really like the radio or music screen, lacks eye candy. You would think which such a nice big screen they would have a better looking display for songs.

My original nano I pod worked perfectly, shows all info on screen, even shows the name valor on the i pod screen and charges it during connection.

Seemed to have more power output then my stock radio, music seems louder and crisper though dvd audio is quieter just like on my laptop.

Installed the back up camera option and that works great, but when first starting the car you must wait a long 15-20 sec before stereo boots up, the camera wont work until stereo is booted up so no more start and take off if I want to use the camera I must wait.

As long as it continues to work im satisfied with it, I think it was the cheapest navigation unit around and I like it.

you get what you pay for

Written By Joe15, Albany, NY on Monday, August 03, 2009

i had this product for 2 days and it wouldnt work with our speakers. Also,
the fm tuner was terrible and i couldnt even listen to any of the radio
stations that usually worked. However the navigation and dvd features
worked well. I then returned this product and i am currently waiting on a
new pioneer unit. The crutchfeld staff was very cooperative when i called
them and helped me pick a new unit

Not really a bargain

Written By Jason, Tampa FL on Monday, July 20, 2009

I primarily wanted to use this headunit for ipod playback and navigation.

Ipod:
-No playlist support.
-The menus are VERY slow to navigate and badly laid out. Over 1 min to
find an artist.
-After selecting an artist you cannot select an album. It displays every
song by that artist.
-Pushing the up button doesnt go up one level, instead it heads back to
the main menu to search every list again.
-While using the navigation unit it incorrectly displays all tags as unknown.
-Wont work at all with the iphone.
-No way to input what song/artist you would like to jump to.
-If a song changes while you are picking another song it ignores your
selection.

Navigation:
-Clunky to use
-you have to dig through a menu when you reach your destination to
cancel the trip.
-No music control.
-The womans voice sounds like she is talking through a sock in her mouth.
It picks obtuse routes.
-Crashes often.
-It asks every time it starts up to agree to the TOS.

TouchScreen:
-75% of the time It will not recognize touches, made worse with slow
menus.
-Many menu items are too close to the edge of the screen to push
-If push is actually recognized it shows the animation of the button being
pushed but not released and then does nothing.

Misc:
-No rear per-amp out. Rear output is for a separate source.
-Only easy way to change input is with remote. Input text is partially off
the screen.

Returned the unit. Unlike the receiver, Crutchfield rocks.

Valor NVG-606W

Written By Andy, Boston, MA on Sunday, July 12, 2009

Nice unit with performance and features you don't expect. Standard IPod control is a plus. I did find the installation instruction a little vague and I took my time installing it into a 04 Silverado excab. The Navi SD card is now labeled so you don't erase it and the system is easy to use. I would like to see the ability to add custom text when programming the radio stations or better yet have the unit display call letters and what type of programming (RDS type info). 36 FM presets is overkill in my opinion. I was debating between the Valor and Kenwood units for a while to me the only thing radio wise missing from this unit is RDS but that was not worth twice the price

Has some issues

Written By Collin, LA, Ca on Wednesday, July 08, 2009

This unit is nice, However has many issues. The ipod capability is very poor. No playlist. Often has the wrong song title or band title on display. Freezes often. No real shuffle option. Shuffle plays the same shuffle list over and over. GPS Navi is ok with some issues of confusion.

Instalation was easy however Lots of wires to make room for.

DVD is good quaility and works great. Navi is able to keep up even under clouds and in parking structures.

Better to pay more to get more....

Good Unit for the Money

Written By Shane, Texas on Tuesday, May 26, 2009

I have had this unit for a few days and for the most part it is a good addition. My main gripes are that you have to cancel your trip repeatedly if you do not finish it and that the CD player takes a long time to read the disc. The navigation unit cut out once, but I may have accidentally turned it off by pushing the wrong button.
