Our take on the Polk Audio Monitor 40

No room for tower speakers? No problem. Get rich sound with deep, high-impact bass from Polk's Monitor 40 bookshelf speaker. It sports dual 5-1/4" Dynamic Balance® woofers and a 1" Dynamic Balance silk/polymer dome tweeter. The highs are vibrant and detailed, while the mids and lows are bold and clear. A rear-panel flared port reinforces the bass without introducing sound-muddying noise. And the rock-solid MDF construction virtually eliminates resonance.

At about 16" tall, the Monitor 40 will fit in rooms where tower speakers will not, and its high-efficiency design lets it produce big sound without loss of clarity. Dual 5-way binding posts allow for bi-wiring or bi-amping. For even better bass extension from your stereo music, just team the Monitor 40 up with a Polk powered subwoofer. Plus, you can put together a voice-matched Polk Monitor home theater speaker system for thrilling surround sound! Use the 40s as front and surround speakers for small-to-medium-sized rooms, or pair them up with the Polk Monitor 60 or Polk Monitor 70 towers for larger rooms.

Features
Note

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: Each speaker features two lightweight, yet stiff Bi-Laminate composite woofers with good damping, giving you high efficiency, excellent bass, and low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" fabric/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. Each tweeter uses a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Acoustically Inert Cabinets: The speaker cabinets feature all-MDF construction with internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance.

Ports: There is a single critically-tuned port opening on the rear of each speaker that has low port noise for increased and extended bass response.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: Each speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

Note

Frequency Response Note: The overall frequency response is 47Hz-25kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 57-24kHz.

Polk Audio Monitor 40

Written By thetawave2, Boston, MA on Wednesday, April 13, 2011

It's unfair to compare the Monitor line to the LSi line. The Monitor 40's LSi counterpart is almost three times as expensive! Sure, the Monitor 40 is a bit lacking in the deep bass, but it is a bookshelf speaker (and a relatively inexpensive one at that). For what it is, I was actually quite impressed by the bass response. Support a pair of these with a decent subwoofer and you won't be disappointed. The treble can get a bit harsh, especially sibilants, but this is not a problem at moderate listening volumes.

Polk monitor speakers

Written By howzitkauai, Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii on Monday, March 02, 2009

Excellent speaker! Replaced home theatre system with these Polk speakers. I formerly used 603 series speakers (combination of 603's & 601's, plus a 600 center speaker) and found that the these Polk speakers were clearer, more transparent, and better bass for home theatre use than the old ones; stressing - BETTER FOR HOME THEATRE USE. These speakers were larger than the conventional bookshelf sized speakers and produced better, tighter bass and better clearer vocals sounds. I replaced the surround side and back speakers with Polk dipole/bipole speakers as well and a Polk center speaker. Movies are now better sounding than what I can find at any movie theatre.

Excellent surround speakers.

Written By Bruce, Sun City, Ca. on Tuesday, February 10, 2009

I bought these speakers to complete my individually pieced together surround sound system, and to hopefully match everything all up perfectly. My center speaker is a Polk Audio CS2 speaker and my front speakers are Polk Audio t90e tower speakers, which sound just great together. However, I was not quite satisfied with my Sony surround speakers, so I replaced them with the Polk audio Monitor 40's and I am amazed by the difference they made in my set up. If you like the sound of Polk Audio speakers don't hesitate to buy these, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent Bookshelf Speaker

Written By Edmund, Richmond, Ky on Sunday, February 01, 2009

Tight bass, clear highs - not your typical bookshelf speaker. Driven by a
Denon DRA-37 stereo Receiver - these speakers sound great.

Polk Monitor 40 - No shortage of bass

Written By Luigi, Erie, PA on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

I have had these speakers for over two months and they sound great. Some people have said that they are low on bass. I used these speakers many times without a subwoofer and they do put out great bass for a speaker this size. It is not stellar, but given the fact that they have five inch woofers they do sound great. I have them paired with other Polk speakers and a small subwoffer and they do fill a room that's 45 by 25 feet.

What a Difference!

Written By David, Charleston, WV on Sunday, January 25, 2009

I added these speakers to the boxed Onkyo system I purchased a year or so ago. What a difference they make! From what I have seen, most boxed systems have mediocre speakers. This set makes the most of all the power my Onkyo receiver possesses! I recommend this set highly as a great upgrade to the original speakers of a boxed system.

Polk Audio Monitor 40

Written By kelvin, white plains ,md on Friday, January 02, 2009

mid range and treble response are very good but I was dissapointed with bass reponse. I found the enclosure to be very cheap feeling and light(weight). I would suggest adding a good sub to get better low end sound.
LSI series are light years better, save up for them.

Impressed!

Written By edavis, Cincinnati, OH on Wednesday, December 17, 2008

I originally wanted tower speakers for my fronts, but due to my furniture
location, I went with these instead. These speakers performed above and
beyond my expectations of bookshelf speakers! I have them paired with a
CS2 center speaker, OWM3 surround speakers, and PSW10 sub. After
connecting them to my Onkyo 805, I did the Audyssey auto-calibration and
fine-tuned them with an SPL meter. I am adding another PSW10 to
complete my 7.2 set-up, but this system blows away my old Sony HTiB.
Great speakers!!

Incredible Difference!

Written By David, Charleston, WV on Saturday, December 06, 2008

I purchased these speakers as replacements to the originals that came with my Onkyo HT 800 system. The difference was incredible! I've long been a fan of Polk quality, and these two bookshelf units don't disappoint! I can't think of more "bang for the buck" with any other pair of front speakers. I also purchased a CS-2 Polk center speaker. All three of them together are fabulous!

I definitely recommend.
