Features
Cosmetics: The buttons, trim
ring, controls and the face plate body are gunmetal gray.
Copper Plated Chassis: The
chassis is plated in copper to help shield the unit from noise.
Positive/Negative Display:
The
display may be set to show white characters on a blue background (negative) or blue
characters on a white background (positive).
Adjustable Display Contrast:
The
display contrast may be adjusted for better viewing from various angles and in less than
optimum lighting conditions.
Illumination Wire: This unit
is equipped with an illumination wire that dims the display to a preset level when the
"Dimmer" feature is set to "Auto" and the vehicle's lights are turned
on.
Selectable Display Angle:
The unit may be set to hold the display flat against the front of the unit (normal) or at
a 10 or 20 degree angle to the front of the unit.
Switchable Button Illumination: You can select Amber or Green
illumination for the buttons. Please note that the display color stays the same.
Note: The rotary encoder and
the wired remote "Source" button each have a ring of blue illumination around
them that is not affected by the button illumination setting.
Optical Digital Output:
This
unit is equipped with a non-standard optical mini-jack output for connection to a
processor with a digital input. Item 158XAD210 is required to convert the digital output
to a standard TOSLINK optical digital connection.
4-volt Front, Rear and Subwoofer
Preamplified Outputs: This unit is equipped with full-range front, rear and
subwoofer preamp outputs. Note that the subwoofer output is non-fading.
Low Preamp
Output Impedance:
The preamp outputs have an output impedance of 200-ohms; 200-ohms is lower than
on many receivers. Low preamp output impedance allows an amplifier or processor
connected this unit's preamp outputs to receive a greater portion of the output
signal than it would when connected to a head unit with a higher preamp output
impedance.
DSP/EQ Control: This unit
will control Sony's Uni-Link EQs (items 158XDP210E and 158XDP766E) and DSP processor
(158XDPU50D).
Four 20-bit D/A converters
Three-second ESP:
This unit
is equipped with 3-second electronic shock protection to prevent CD skipping during
disturbances lasting up to 3-seconds in duration. Memory buffer is 4 megabits.
VC (Variable Coefficient) Digital
Filter:
A filter that lets you change the cutoff characteristics of the digital
filter to best match the CD being played and the listening environment in which it is
being heard. This feature can only be used for CDs played in this unit; it has no effect
on the sound of CDs and/or MiniDiscs played in an optional CD/MD changer. You can set the
filter to:
- "Plain" for high clarity and strong
sound image
- "Analog A" or "Analog B"
for a warm and deep sound image
- "Standard" for a wide ranging,
spatial sound image
CD-Text Display:
When
playing a CD-Text disc in this unit, the disc name, artist name and track name are
displayed (if they have all been recorded on disc). When used with a CD changer with CD
Text capability, this unit can display the CD Text information of discs in the CD changer.
Unit can be set to scroll CD-text display that is too long.
CD Program Memory:
You can
store up to 2 Programs of 12 tracks each for discs in this unit or any optional CD/MD
changer. You can play either program or both, and erase a single track or an entire
program.
SSIR-EX Tuner
Station Memo: You can assign
a name of up to 8 characters to each of 44 stations. Stations that have been assigned
names may be selected by name using the List function.
Adaptive Reception: This feature has three modes (wide, narrow, auto) for
optimizing FM reception. Wide mode decreases the tuner's selectivity but results in better
frequency response. Narrow mode has better selectivity for improved adjacent station
rejection, but frequency response is not as wide as with the wide mode. The auto mode
automatically adjusts the tuner for a good balance between frequency response and minimum
station-to-station interference.
Cellular Mute: Mutes audio
when a cellular call is received, then restores the level once the call is over. To use
this feature, you must have a cellular phone with a muting output that
can be connected to the muting input wire.
Source Tone Memory: Each source (AM/FM/CD and CD/MD-Changer) can store
its own bass and treble levels.
Fold-Out Face: The CD slot is located behind the fold-out face. The face
is motorized, for easy loading and unloading access.
Rotary Encoder Control w/ Lever:
In
place of electronic up/down buttons, this unit is equipped with a control that turns like
a conventional knob (for volume, bass, treble etc) and a lever control (for seek and
manual tuning, track advance and track search) for easy, intuitive operation.
You can change the sound and display settings by using the wireless remote:
- Clock: (set clock time, turn clock display in
upper left hand portion of display on/off).
- Beep: Turns on/off the beeps that the unit
normally makes when a function is selected.
- Rotary Remote: Changes the direction of the
controls to correspond to where it is mounted (left or right of steering column).
- Seek/AMS: may be set to Seek/AMS to quickly
locate tracks/stations, or set to "Item sel" to locate discs/stations in the
name list using the wired remote or the front panel control.
- Digital Out: turns digital out on/off.
- VC Filter: selects Variable Coefficient filter
setting.
- Direct Volume: may be set to "on" to
have audio signal bypass the tone control circuit for highest signal purity, or set to
"off" to have audio signal pass through the tone control circuit.
- P.Mode: used to select the repeat, shuffle and
program modes.
- ILL: selects green or amber button
illumination.
- Dimmer: may be set to "on",
"off" or "auto" ("auto" dims the display to a preset
brightness level when the vehicle's lights are turned on)
- Panel Angle: may be set to "Top"
(normal), 10 or 20.
- Contrast: selects contrast setting between 1
and 15.
- Font Style: may be set to display characters
in "bold" or "regular" font.
- EL: may be set to "on" to have the
display shut off a few moments after any of the unit's controls are operated, or set to
"off" to keep the display on as long as the unit is on.
- Display: may be set to "negative" or
"positive"
- Auto Scroll: turns text auto scrolling on or
off.
- Disc Name: may be set to "D. Memo"
to display disc titles entered using the Disc Memo function, or set to "TEXT" to
display the original CD Text information. The Disc Name menu selection is only available
while playing a CD.
- Station Memo: selects the "write" or
"delete" mode for station memo entry. The Station Memo menu selection is only
available while playing the tuner.
- Select: allows you to select the function of
the three button located to the right of the display. When set to "Source", the
buttons to the right of the display may be used to select CD repeat/shuffle/program modes
or tuner BTM/Mono/Local modes. When set to "DVOL/EL" (for the tuner) or
"VC/DVOL/EL" (for CD), the buttons to the right of the display may be used to
select the DVOL, EL and/or VC modes.

Notes
Remote Compatibility: This unit is not
compatible with any Sony remotes except the wired and wireless remotes supplied.
There is a power inverter box hard wired to
this unit; the DC inverter box is at the end of a 29" cable that must not be modified
or cut. There is a sticker on the inverter that warns against disassembly and contact with
water. The inverter box dimensions are: H=0.940", W=1.983", D=1.510".
The preamp outputs and antenna input are on
pigtails. The constant power and ground wires are hard-wired to the rear of the unit (the
constant power wire has an in-line fuse/noise suppressor box, with a 10-amp fuse
installed).
There must be at least 2.0" of clearance in front of the radio opening to allow the
face to fully fold out.
The attenuator/mute function is accessible only by remote (wired and wireless remotes
included).
Upon initial power up, this unit allows you
set it to work in vehicle with or without accessory power for the radio. When set
for a vehicle that only has constant power for the radio, the display turns off when the
unit is turned off to prevent the display illumination from draining the battery; when set
to work with accessory power, the display illuminates whenever both power wires are
supplied with voltage.
