Our take on the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS

by Tara W.

High-zoom cameras put you "right there"

High-zoom cameras have powerful built-in lenses that get you close — really close — to your subject. Focus in on a circling hawk and capture intricate feather patterns, or zoom across the backyard for a candid close-up of your toddler's face. High-zoom cameras tend to be a bit bigger than the average point-and-shoot because of their larger lenses. These cameras also sometimes feature advanced controls for customizing your photos.

CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

Record every angle of your favorite city — from a hazy horizon bristling with high-rise buildings to the worn wooden slats of a park bench. The capable 12.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SX20 IS will fill your photographs with the details that really capture a mood. Incredible 20X optical zoom gets you close to your subject, while an image stabilizer helps keep your shots steady. This camera also features a wide-angle lens for shooting sprawling landscapes or large crowds. And Canon's latest DIGIC 4 image processor makes for speedy operation, so you never have to miss a great photo opportunity.

Compose and share photos and high-def videos on the fold-out, rotating LCD screen, or set them up using the electronic viewfinder. Face detection helps you take true-to-life portraits and group photos. The camera focuses on the faces in your frame and adjusts exposure, flash, and white balance settings to accurately capture skin tones, regardless of the surrounding light. Manual modes let you customize settings for creative, artistic photographs.

The SX20 IS doesn't include any type of memory, so make sure to pick up an SD™ card.

Features

Vari-Angle LCD Monitor: The Canon PowerShot SX20 IS has a 2.5" low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color vari-angle LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 pixels. The monitor has a 100% picture coverage. The high-resolution screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient. The vari-angle LCD monitor can be rotated 270-degrees and swiveled 170-degrees so you can take pictures at nearly every angle. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light applications. When shooting in dark conditions, the camera automatically brightens the LCD monitor to suit the brightness of the subject, making it easier to frame the subject.

Viewfinder: The digital camera also features a 0.44" TFT color viewfinder with approximately 235,000 pixels and a 100% picture coverage rate. The viewfinder also has a dioptric adjustment between -6.0 to +2.0m.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor with iSAPS Technology: The PowerShot SX20 IS features the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, designed to improve processing speed, image quality, and efficiency. The DIGIC 4 processor provides faster camera startup, autofocus, and playback, and assures that every image is more colorful and vibrant. The iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology uses an internal database of thousands of photographs to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Face Detection Technology: The DIGIC 4 chip includes Face Detection technology. Face Detection finds all the faces in the frame and sets the most suitable focus point. In addition the digital camera features Face Select and Track which lets you highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera will then concentrate on that one person, even as they move around the scene.

Recording Media: The PowerShot SX20 IS records images on SD (Secure Digital), SDHC memory card, MMC (MultiMedia Card), MMCplus card, or HD MMCplus card.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images or moving images with monaural audio. Still images are recorded in JPEG format and movies are recorded in MOV format (Image data: H.264, Audio data: Linear PCM).

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.3" CCD image sensor with approximately 12.4 million total pixels and 12.1 million effective pixels.

Still Image Resolution/Compression: There are six still image resolutions to choose from: Large (12M): 4000 x 3000 pixels/4:3 aspect ratio, Wide (8M): 3840 x 2160 pixels/16:9 aspect ratio, Medium 1 (8M): 3264 x 2448 pixels/4:3 aspect ratio, Medium 2 (5M): 2592 x 1944 pixels/4:3 aspect ratio, Medium 3 (2M): 1600 x 1200 pixels/4:3 aspect ratio, and Small (0.3M): 640 x 480 pixels/4:3 aspect ratio. 28mm Wide-Angle Lens: The PowerShot SX20 IS is equipped with a 20x wide-angle optical zoom lens with a focal length of 5.0-100mm (35mm film equivalent: 28-560mm) that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto. The camera uses a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel. UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens.

Digital Zoom: The 4x digital zoom extends the camera's telephoto capabilities to a total zoom of 80x. The digital camera allows you to adjust the Zoom between 4 settings.

  • Standard: enables shooting at zoom factors of up to 80x with digital and optical zooms combined at a focal length of 28mm to 2240mm
  • Off: enables shooting without digital zoom with a focal length of 28mm to 560mm
  • 1.5x: digital zoom is fixed at the select zoom factor of 1.5x for a focal length of 42mm to 840mm enabling faster shutter speed and less chance of camera shake
  • 2.0x: digital zoom is fixed at the select zoom factor of 2.0x for a focal length of 56mm to 1120mm enabling faster shutter speed and less chance of camera shake

Optical Image Stabilization: The Image Stabilizer function allows you to minimize the camera shake which results in blurred images when you shoot distant subjects that have been magnified or when you shoot in dark conditions.

Continuous Shooting Mode: You can use this mode to shoot successive frames while the shutter button is fully pressed. There are three modes:

  • Continuous: Records approximately 1.0 images per second, focus is fixed on the original subject distance.
  • Continuous Shooting AF (auto focus): Records approximately 0.7 images per second, focus adjusts as needed.
  • Continuous Shooting LV (live view): Records approximately 0.7 images per second, focus is fixed at a manual setting.

Self-Timer: The self-timer starts when the shutter button is pressed. The delay time can be set to 10 seconds, 2 seconds, Custom, or Face Self-Timer. The Custom Timer allows you to choose a timer delay setting of 0-10, 15, 20, or 30 seconds and the number of shots, up to 10. The Face Self-Timer will not shoot until after a new face is detect within the composition. You can change the number of shots for the Face Self-Timer from 1-10.

Note: If the camera does not detect a new face within 30 seconds during the Face Self-Timer, the camera will automatically release the shutter.

AutoFocus Modes: The camera utilizes TTL (through-the-lens) automatic focusing with two auto focus modes:

  • Continuous: The camera is constantly focusing wherever it is aimed, even when the shutter button is not pressed.
  • Single: The camera only focuses when the shutter button is pressed halfway, conserving battery power.

AutoFocus Area Modes: The camera features two area focusing methods:

  • Face Detect: The camera automatically detects the position of a face and uses the data to set the focus and exposure while shooting; the digital camera can recognize up to 9 faces.
  • Face Select: You can choose a specific person's face to focus on and then shoot. Even if the the subject moves, the camera will track his or her's face.
  • Center: The camera fixes the AF frame at the center; this is recommended when the target subject is at the center of the composition.
  • FlexiZone: AF frame can be moved manually to the desired area (FlexiZone), making sure the focus is exactly where you want it.

AF Zoom: You can zoom the display of the AF frame to check focus when shooting or right after taking a shot.

AF-Assist Beam: The AF-assist beam will sometimes emit when the shutter button is pressed halfway to assist focusing in certain conditions, i.e. dark conditions. The AF-assist beam can be turned off. If animals are your subject, turn off the beam when shooting in the dark to avoid startling them.

Manual Focus: You can select a Manual Focus mode if you want more control, or cannot achieve a good focus automatically. When in the Manual Focus mode a magnified image appears in the center frame on the monitor and a scale is displayed to indicate the approximate focal distance.

Focus Lock: If it becomes difficult to focus on the subject due to low contrast to the surroundings, close up and far away subjects in the same shot, or quickly moving subjects, you can choose to lock the focus or auto focus on an object at a similar distance, then shoot the picture after recomposing the shot.

Focus Bracketing: The camera automatically takes three shots; one at the manual focus position, and one each with focus positions preset farther and nearer. The three shots are taken at the same interval as continuous shooting. The farter and nearer focus positions can be set in three steps - large, medium and small.

Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges:

  • Normal: Use this mode when the distance from the end of the lens to the subject is 1.6' to infinity (W), 3.3' to infinity (T)
  • Macro Mode: You can shoot an object at a close distance or approach an object to shoot close-up. The focusing range from the end of the lens 3.9" to 1.6' (W)
  • Super Macro: You can shoot an object at even a closer distance or approach an object to shoot even more close-up. The focusing range from the end of the lens 0.0" to 3.9" (W)
  • Manual Focus: In this mode the camera can focus from 0.39" to infinity (W), 3.3' to infinity (T)
  • Sports Mode: Use this mode when photographing sporting event when the distance from the end of the lens to the subject is 3.3' to 13.1'.

Blink Detection: The camera provides a visual indication on the LCD monitor or viewfinder when there has been the possibility that one of your subject's have blinked.

Shooting Modes: Using the Mode Dial on the top of the camera, you can select from numerous shooting modes:

  • Auto: Recognizes typical shooting scenes, and detects faces, brightness, colors, distance and movement and selects the settings according to surroundings and conditions.
  • Smart Auto: The Smart Auto mode intelligently selects the proper settings for the camera based on 22 predefined shooting situations. This advanced Canon technology intelligently analyzes your situation and shooting conditions, then automatically selects an appropriate setting from 22 specially defined settings.
  • Creative Zone: The digital camera offers various manual and semi-manual shooting modes.
    • Program AE (P): the camera automatically sets both the aperture and the shutter speed
    • Shutter Speed Priority (Tv): when you set the shutter speed, the camera sets the aperture

Exif Print (Exif 2.2): The Canon PowerShot SX20 IS conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

DPOF Compatible: On your SD Memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once on optional photo printers or at participating photo labs. You can use the camera to specify settings for images that you wish to download to a computer. The settings used on the camera comply with the Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) standards. A maximum of 998 images can be selected per SD card, and are transferred in order from oldest to newest by shooting date.

Good Choice -- with Some Limits

Written By Rich, Lawrenceville, NJ on Sunday, January 17, 2010

This is more than most people will want for a point-and-shoot. It's relatively large and
heavy and loaded with features but offers very high resolution and considerable zoom.
It's probably one of the best without going to SLR. Advances over previous PowerShots:
HD capability (but HDMI requires special cord for display purposes); wide-angle
(panoramic) capability; clip-on lens cap; good battery life; takes SDHC cards; much
stronger flash; option to use AC adapter and rechargeable batteries (neither included).
A major fault is lack of complete hardcopy manual. To learn anything beyond basics,
you must use 180-page manual on supplied disc -- not the easiest way to master
operation, which is not always user-friendly. A minor fault is that lens cap snaps
awkwardly to camera strap (I use a string to avoid losing it).
Quality of pictures is variable on Auto setting. Adjustments may be possible, but I have
had camera only a month. Learning adjustments is a chore without printed manual.
Focus can be tricky, should improve with continued practice. A simpler camera will
better serve point-and-shoot users but is unlikely to produce large photos for cropping or
to have as much zoom.

Great camera

Written By Phil, Chantilly, VA on Tuesday, October 06, 2009

This camera takes beautiful pictures. I had it set on Auto and took a close up picture of a flower. It automatically switched to Macro mode and the picture is awsome...I can even see the hair on the bee that was on the flower. At full zoom (20X), I was able to get a sharp enough picture of a license plate to read the plate number and this is without a tripod. The zoom lens extends and retracts very fast. It is a little on the heavy side as it does use 4 AA batteries. I had a Nikon P90 and while it took great pictures, this Canon does much better.
