Our take on the Westinghouse LVM-42w2

Get High-Def Programming

With full 1920 by 1080-pixel resolution, plus the ability to accept 1080p signals, this 42" LCD is more "HDTV-ready" than nearly any other flat-panel set you can buy. The 1080p design of the Westinghouse LVM-42w2 allows it to show every detail of a 1080i HDTV broadcast without reducing picture clarity. And 1080p-compatible inputs put you in the driver's seat for the new high-definition disc formats: HD DVD and Blu-ray.

This display is a monitor only — there is no built-in tuner of any type. For standard broadcasts, one easy solution is to make use of the TV tuner built into your VCR. To receive high-definition signals, connect a separate HDTV tuner. The set's "jack pack" includes composite, S-video, and HD-compatible component video inputs. You also get one HDMI and two DVI digital video inputs for use with compatible HD tuners and DVRs, as well as "upconverting" DVD players. Even the PC input can accept signals up to 1080p.

A powerful built-in "scaler" converts all incoming video signals to match the LCD panel's 1080p native resolution. Sound quality is quite good, also, thanks to a built-in 3-speaker system. Whether you're enjoying a DVD movie or studying a computer spreadsheet, the LVM-42w2 displays everything with startling clarity and detail.

Great product for the money

Written By William, Altoona, PA on Monday, April 09, 2007

This is not a television. That's why there's no tuner built-in. This TV however will connect to digital cable boxes and satellite dishes with either RCA (not recommended), component (for best analog picture quality), or HDMI (best digital picture quality, recommended.).

This television has true 1080p from HDMI, Component, DVI, and VGA.

The stand is easily removable with two long screws near the bottom of the back of the unit. I have it hanging on my wall, and it's perfect.

PROS:
- 1080p from multiple sources.
- Fast picture
- Inexpensive compared to other 'televisions'
- Around three inches at it's deepest point, very thin!

CONS:
- Only 1 HDMI port
- No built-in tuner (Which is known upon purchase so no big deal to me.)
- Cheap remote (No biggie.)

Buy it!

Written By Philip, Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, April 01, 2007

Product Review

I've had this product for three days now and I am amazed at the picture quality. I have it connected to a cable box and my computer and the only down side is it sometimes has trouble switching between different resolutions. This is easily solved by cycling though the inputs.

Customer Service

For some reason my TV was shipped without a remote, power cable, and manual. I immediately called customer service and was greeted by a courteous woman who assured me that she would handle the situation. The package of missing items was on my doorstep the next day.

I give both the TV and Crutchfield and A+!!!

Good Service, Good Value

Written By Vooch from Philly, Philly on Saturday, March 31, 2007

SERVICE
When I got my first set, it had a few bad pixels. I called Crutchfield and they said this was within the mfr's quality specs. I said that one of the pixels was bright red and very distracting. Crutchfield then agreed to swap it.

Crutchfield and their partner, EGL freight, did a good job in replacing the set - despite the fact that it was in a different location from where it was originally delivered.

PRODUCT CONS
The only downside to the design that I see is the single HDMI port. I was disappointed with the defects on first set, but I guess this happens. Other posters have complained about the remote - I think it's fine.

PRODUCT PROS
The picture is good. The screen menu is easy to navigate. The sound is good. The set itself looks handsome (grey/black) - I can't wait to see it when it is mounted.

Overall good value for the money. I'll probably buy another (smaller) Westy and if I get it online, it'll be through Crutchfield.

If you are hesitating...

Written By John, Shawnee, OK on Thursday, March 22, 2007

..don't! Go ahead and get it! In its price range it is worth every penny...you will not find a better monitor for this price!

Pros:
Screen is clear and bright, looks good from any angle, LOADED with inputs. DVI, HDMI, Component, S-Video, SVHS..., works as a plug and play monitor with Windows XP with no driver .inf file needed, works great as a PC monitor on DVI!

Cons: Main con for me is like mentioned in other reviews, you have to have the remote pointed directly at the "W" for anything to work. Letterbox movies do not "fit" they leave a black line at the top and bottom, but you can use the "fill" feature to make it stretch over the screen.

Westinghouse LVM-42w2

Written By Warren, Nashua, NH on Friday, March 09, 2007

I have had this monitor since about October 2006.

Pros:
- It operates as you would expect from a LCD monitor.
- "Widescreen" DVD format looks fairly good through the component cables, able to use the majority of the screen.
- HD television and movies look very good.
- Playstation 2 games are generally nice through the component cables.
- Playstation 3 is absolutely beautiful at 1080p.
- Many inputs make this a very versatile and possibly future-proofed screen.

Cons:
- Most of the detriments of this screen have to do with anything having to do with standard definition inputs that are not "wide screen" capable. This is because the screen completely lacks any auto-scaling. This means it cannot fully use the screen for "letter box" formatted movies and standard definition TV programming. Quality of SD signals viewed on this screen are generally poor.
- "Fullscreen" formatted DVD's are sometimes painful to watch.
- The remote control is very annoying. It does not work unless you point it directly at the "W" at the base of the screen.
- Reportedly the PS3 has DRM syncing problems with the Westinghouse screens. I only tested my friend's PS3 briefly on my screen through a DVI-to-HDMI converter cable which apparently works around this problem. Beware.

Bottom line:
Very nice if all of your inputs are HD or widecreen formatted SD. But other SD programming is painful to watch on this Westinghouse.

A good value

Written By Bruce, Niwot, CO on Wednesday, March 07, 2007

I bought this monitor to replace a very good Panasonic plasma monitor that I had purchased a year ago. Unfortunately, I could resolve individual pixels on the plasma unless I sat in the farthest seat away from it in our living room. After a while, that started to bother me, and I could not enjoy HD programming on the plasma.

There are currently no 1080-line plasmas available in the 37 - 42" size range that I wanted, so I bought an LCD. Going into the purchase, I knew that I was giving up the almost unlimited viewing angle of a plasma display. In order to have optimum contrast and color saturation on the Westy, you really need to be within +/- 30 degrees of center horizontally. Other family members are satisfied up to 45 degrees off center.

On the plus side, the Westy performs better than the plasma did during daylight hours, both because the picture can be brighter and because reflections off the front surface are more diffuse. These are both well known plasma-LCD tradeoffs.

I don't notice any image artifacts from the slower-switching (vs. plasma) LCD pixels. With the current state of compressed digital HD video, you are much more likely to see MPEG tiling in dynamic areas anyway.

There is plenty of good information online about setting up this monitor. However, the built-in "warm" color-temperature setting is close to optimum. Use the "Backlight" adjustment to compensate for varying room-light levels. Stay away from the service menu unless you really know what you are doing. If you switch to a disconnected or dormant input in service mode, the screen will go white and the Westy will not respond to commands.

Westy Great but Expect ...

Written By Stan, Bradenton, FL on Friday, February 23, 2007

What's great about this LCD monitor:
1) Superior picture quality (friends are comparing it to my SONY 60A2000)
2) HDMI (1) & DVI (2) inputs provide flexibility for almost all your needs
3) Input locations on both sides of monitor
4) Appearance - it looks slick
5) Unreal viewing angle

What's OK about this LCD monitor:
1) Nice monitor stand (already attached to monitor and helps with set-up) BUT the stand does not swivel. This is a need to know prior to purchase
2) Audio output is weak, very weak; I just purchased a set of speakers instead of listening to this audio output
3) No extended warranty from Crutchfiend when living in Florida

REALLY NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED:
1) Believe all those statements regarding the REMOTE CONTROL! I'd rather use controls on the monitor versus struggling with this wanna-be remote control. Getting the monitor to accept the remote signal requires prayers or curses!
2) Manual - many languages and how to connect to a computer BUT nothing regarding use as a video monitor for hi-def.
3) No optical (toslink) or digital coax audio (minus HDMI)

Would I Purchase Again? YES YES YES!
Why? Picture quality is beautiful and pleasing to the eyes. Also, I was aware of static monitor stand and poor remote. My disappointments are in lack of digital audio output unless used with HDMI (my mistake) and the cheesy manual.

Westy Rules!

Written By Tim, Eugene, Or. on Tuesday, February 06, 2007

I purchased this TV from JP at Crutchfield. I had no need for a tuner, I wanted 1080p, had limited space (42.4"), and wanted the best picture for my money. JP was right on the mark when he pointed me to this monitor. I have Comcast HD service, and don't really watch anything other than the 12-13 HD channels I receive. Regular TV only looks marginal, but HD is out of control good. Even my mother-in-law said "wow" when she came over for the Superbowl. Yes, that's right, I watched the Superbowl with my mother-in-law. Long story. To sum it up, get this monitor. It is truly worth every penny :)

Excellent value, as also mentioned by Consumer Guide.
Picture compares very favorably to an any of the higher priced HD TVs. The sound is ok, but most LCD TVs that I have tested have similar sound quality.

Great Picture at a Great Price

Written By Craig, East TN on Tuesday, January 30, 2007

For the price it really can't be beat. I have not had the opportunity to hookup 1080p sources, but wanted that option for future use. More than 1 hdmi input would have been nice, but no big deal. Overall a great monitor.
