Our take on the Kenwood HTB-505

If you already have a DVD player, but want to add 5.1-channel surround sound to the mix, check out the HTB-505 system from Kenwood. This package includes a home theater receiver, five speakers, and a powered subwoofer — just hook up your DVD player and get ready for all the thrills home theater has to offer!

The receiver delivers 100 watts x 5 channels of RMS power and includes Dolby® Digital and DTS® decoding for DVDs, and Pro Logic™ II for VHS tapes and TV broadcasts. The Midnight Theater Mode limits the extremes between loud and soft volumes, so you can enjoy late-night home theater excitement without disturbing others. And with plenty of analog and digital inputs, you can make the HTB-505 receiver the heart of your entire A/V system!

The front left and right speakers and center channel include dual 4" woofers and a 1" tweeter for a broad, powerful front soundstage, and the compact surround speakers handle ambient sounds and directional special effects with amazing ease. Plus, the 100-watt powered subwoofer adds the vital bass content, so you'll hear (and feel!) the true impact of 5.1-channel surround sound.

This package includes speaker cables for the five satellite speakers and the subwoofer. In order to enjoy digital surround sound, you'll need to purchase a digital cable to connect the receiver to your DVD player. (Check your DVD player to find out which type of digital cable you need — optical or coaxial. The receiver has inputs for both.) You can buy both optical digital cables and coaxial digital cables from Crutchfield, so you'll have everything you need to get the system up and running in a matter of minutes.

KS-706HT Speaker System

System Overview: This system includes a VR-606 Dolby Digital/Dolby Pro Logic II/DTS receiver with 5 matching speakers (KS-706HT) and a separate powered subwoofer (SW-36HT). A multibrand joystick remote is included for system control.

VR-606 Receiver Features

KAM-1 Power Amplifier Circuitry: This exclusive Kenwood modular amplifier circuit doubles electrical efficiency, producing more power while generating less heat. KAM-1 offers superior sound quality and reliability.

96kHz/24-bit Audio D/A Conversion: This unit will accept and play 96kHz/24 bit linear PCM digital audio.

Dolby Pro Logic II: Pro Logic II is a Dolby Laboratories technology that produces surround sound from any stereo source, including CDs, VHS tapes, and TV programs. Like Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II has stereo surround output, giving you a more realistic surround sound experience. Unlike Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II allows you to enjoy a "5.1-like" presentation using any analog stereo source. Pro Logic II includes a Movie mode, Music mode, and standard four-channel Pro Logic decoding mode. The music mode gives you three additional sound adjustments: Panorama Mode, Dimension Mode and Center Width Mode.

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your video software. The surround modes include:

  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie and Music)
  • DTS
  • Arena
  • Jazz Club
  • Stadium
  • Theater
  • Disco

Midnight Mode (Dolby Digital Mode Only): Anytime you don't want to experience the loud and soft volume extremes of recorded sound, use the Midnight Mode to reduce volume extremes. This feature keeps loud, dramatic sound from being too loud while ensuring that you can still hear whispered dialogue or other soft sounds.

Cinema EQ: During Dolby Digital and DTS playback, you can enjoy a more impressive sound effect by switching on the Cinema EQ.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness may be set to one of three available settings.

Inputs/Outputs Note: The Audio/Video input labeled "DVD/6-Ch Input" combines the DVD analog input with the multi-channel input for an external decoder. If you are connecting a DVD player using the stereo analog inputs, you should use the Front Left and Right RCA jacks of this input. If you are connecting an external 5.1-channel decoder or a DVD player with built-in Dolby Digital (and/or DTS) decoding, you should use all 6 RCA jacks (Front L+R, Surround L+R, Center and Subwoofer). In addition to the 6 audio input jacks, there are composite and S-Video jacks.

Remote Control

RC-R0728 IR Multibrand Remote: The supplied joystick remote communicates with the receiver via infrared transmission. It is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other Kenwood components, including cassette decks, CD players, MD recorders/players, and DVD players. In addition, the remote can operate the basic functions of many other brands of TVs, Cable boxes, DSS/SAT receivers, VCRs, and DVD players.

System Control: This receiver is equipped with two Kenwood SL16 system control jacks. Certain Kenwood CD players, cassette decks and mini-disc recorders that are connected to this receiver through the SL16 control jacks can utilize the following system control operations:

  • Automatic Operation: When you start playback from a source component, the input selector on the receiver switches to that component automatically.
  • Remote Control: You can operate the connected component with the receiver's remote control.
  • Synchronized Recording: You can synchronize recording with the start of playback when recording from CD, MD or analog discs.

Dimensions: Length=9.64", Height=2.563", Depth=1.39"

SW-36HT Powered Subwoofer Features

Driver and Enclosure: The SW-35HT has an 8" front-firing woofer powered by a 100-watt amplifier. For extended bass response, the woofer is loaded in a bass-reflex enclosure with a front-firing port.

Auto On/Off Circuit: When a signal is received, the subwoofer amplifier turns on automatically. If no signal is sensed for approximately 12 minutes, the subwoofer enters standby mode. The rear-mounted LED glows red when the subwoofer is in standby mode and green when the subwoofer is active.

Controls: A rear-mounted volume control allows you to match the output of the subwoofer to the rest of your system. Above the volume control is a button that allows you to turn the low-pass crossover on or off. When the crossover is turned on, the rear-mounted crossover control allows you to adjust the crossover point from 60Hz to 200Hz.

KS-706HT Speaker System

Center and Front Speakers: Each speaker has two 4" paper cone woofers with treated cloth surrounds and a 1" poly balanced-dome tweeter. The rear-mounted spring clip terminals on each speaker will accept bare wire and pin connectors. Each enclosure is covered by a removable black cloth grille. Note: The manual states the speakers include holes for wall mounting. The front and center speakers do not have mounting holes.

Rear Speakers: Each rear speaker has a 4" paper cone woofer with a treated cloth surround and a 1" poly balanced-dome tweeter . The rear-mounted spring clip terminals on each speaker will accept bare wire and pin connectors. Each enclosure is covered by a removable black cloth grille.

Rear Speaker Mounting: Each rear speaker has a metal bracket with a keyhole slot on the back that allows the speaker to be wall mounted. If you do not wish to mount the rear speakers on the wall, you can place them on any flat surface.

Video-Shielding: The center speaker and front speakers are video-shielded.
